ASSIGNMENT 5

HEAT AND MASS TRANSFER

(MHM420/MHM780) - 2019
Self-Study Assignment

11- 72 A single-pass cross-flow heat exchanger is used to cool jacket water (cp =
4.18 kJ/kg.°C) of a diesel engine from 90°C to 60°C, using air (cp = 1.02 kJ/kg.°C)
with inlet temperature of 30°C. Both air flow and water flow are unmixed. If the water
and air mass flow rates are 42000 kg/h and 180000 kg/h, respectively, determine the
log mean temperature difference for this heat exchanger.

11-109 A cross-flow heat exchanger consists of 80 thin walled tubes of 3-cm

diameter located in a duct of 1 m × 1 m cross section. There are no fins attached to
the tubes. Cold water (cp = 4180 J/kg.K) enters the tubes at 18°C with an average
velocity of 3 m/s, while hot air (cp =1010 J/kg.K) enters the channel at 130°C and
105 kPa at an average velocity of 12 m/s. If the overall heat transfer coefficient is
130 W/m2.K, determine the outlet temperatures of both fluids and the rate of heat
transfer.

14-148 A single-pass cross-flow heat exchanger uses hot air (mixed) to heat water
(unmixed), flowing with a mass flow rate of 3 kg/s, from 30°C to 80°C. The hot air
enters and exits the heat exchanger at 220°C and 100°C, respectively. If the overall
heat transfer coefficient is 200 W/m2.K, determine the required surface area.
