CENTURY OF GENIUS
5 FAMOUS PEOPLE TO CONTRIBUTE IN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
Known for his work with Andree Geim in discovering and studying graphene, Novoselov’s work
includes 49 papers mostly in Physics and Materials Science. Dr. Novoselov is a Royal Society
Research Fellow in School of Physics & Astronomy at the University of Manchester as well as
the Langworthy Professor and director of the Manchester Centre for Mesoscience and
Nanotechnology also at the University of Manchester.

The American biologist is famous for being one of the first to sequence the human genome. He
is credited with creating the first cell with a synthetic genome in 2010. Founder of the J. Craig
Venter Institute, his current work is focused on creating synthetic biological organisms and also
documenting the genetic diversity in the world's oceans. He was listed on Time magazine's 2007
and 2008 issues as part of their 100 list of the most influential people in the world. His research
in the field of synthetic life can be used for creating bacteria that can be engineered to perform
specific purpose such as create fuel, manufacture medicine, and correct environmental
problems like global warming.
England’s most famous theoretical physicist and cosmologist has written many scientific books
(especially his runaway bestseller, Brief History of Time). His research and contributions to the
science of cosmology and quantum gravity has contributed to the development of cosmology in
general. Alongside Roger Penrose, he provided theorems on gravitational singularities within
the framework of general relativity and gave theoretical predictions about black holes emits
radiation.

Michio Kaku
Michio Kaku is an American theoretical physicist. He is the co-founder of string field theory. He
has already written several books about physics and related topics. Frequently invited to guest
speak on complicated science subjects such as time travel and singularities, the theoretical
physicist covers a wide range of subjects such as wormholes and time travel.
There are many scientists who have contributed to our society. These are 5 of the influential
engineers of the 21st century that have contributed to the development of science and
engineering. True visionaries, movers and shakers of our time, these people have brought
science to the forefront either by their research or by their advocacy of promoting and
spreading scientific knowledge to anyone and everyone.

Lucille Abad
Senior science research specialist and chief of the Chemistry Research Section, Philippine
Nuclear Research Institute (PNRI)
She developed a plant vitamin – an effective plant growth promoter using irradiated seaweeds.
This research has also been recognized by the Japan-based Forum for Nuclear Cooperation in
Asia.
Phillip Alviola
Curator at the Museum of Natural History, University of the Philippines (UP) Los Baños
Alviola helped develop methods to monitor biodiversity in protected areas. He's been studying
mammals, the diversity of cave-dwelling bats, and bat viruses, which earned him the moniker
"Bat Man."

Nathaniel Hermosa II
Senior science research specialist, Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM)
Jiz significantly contributed to the study of schistosomiasis and the development of a vaccine
against this disease. Schistosomiasis is a chronic disease caused by parasitic worms.

Give 3 examples of technological advancements that came from the roman era.
Cement
When you visit Rome, you’ll see some stunning and impressive ancient structures still standing
in some shape or form. The Pantheon, the Colosseum and the Roman Forum are all examples of
buildings that were built by the Romans using a form of cement. It’s not the cement we use
today, but as an early form it was effective and it was used in many of their structures and
developments.
Elements of surgery
The Romans built on the developments the Greeks made in surgery. They developed many new
surgical tools and techniques themselves. The Romans also used an early form of antiseptic in
surgery - since they acknowledged the need to clean and dip their surgical tools before use.
They developed the idea of the caesarean section. They also pioneered battlefield surgery and
for them, being prepared to medically help their soldiers was a key part of being battle ready
Romans were the first to distribute a form of daily news to citizens. These handwritten sheets
of announcements were publicly displayed in Rome. They also covered political developments,
military updates and details about major scandals or stories. The Romans published accounts of
what happened in the senate and it was Julius Caesar who made sure this information was
made public, in the same way the daily news was.
