The Similarities and Differences of Will and Reason

1. What is Reason?

Ans. a. A form of personal justification which changes from person to person based on their
own ethical and moral code, as well as prior experience.

b. Reason, when removed from emotion, allows a person to make conscious decisions
based on fact, with no reference to personal involvement.

c. The use of reason as a way of knowing, allows for the knower to see the consequences
of their actions throughout the decision-making process.

d. There are limitations to decisions made based on reason alone, perception of

situations is not questioned as it may be with an emotional decision.

e. It allows the knower to understand the consequences of this opinion or other actions
taken with regards to the ethical issue.

2. What is Will?

Ans. a. The standard use of this term is as a distinction between internally motivated and
caused events and external events.

b. A strong desire or determination to do something.

c. A person's choice or desire in a particular situation.

I. Similarity between Will and Reason

Will and reason could be similar in some instances. They could exist, simultaneously. Both of
them could cause a person do such things. Take for example, a student who studies every night.
He does this for a reason that this is the right thing to do, his parents wants him to go to school
and he needs a diploma to apply for a decent job. He also does this out of willingness because
he loves the course he had taken or he loves the subject he is studying. Another instance, a lady
who often goes to mall. She does this because she needs to check if the bookstore have already
released books she needs in her academics (reason), on the other hand, she does this because
she loves the sceneries she sees at the mall (will).

II. Differences between Will and Reason

They could also vary in some ways. Will and reason are two connected thigs. Will is something
that is driven by a reason. Will won't exist without a reason. For example, why would a fresh
high school graduate student desires to go to a university instead of a college institute?
Because he desires so. Why would he desire it? For a reason that, when applying for a job, the
employer woukd choose a person who graduated from a university. He knows that even if he
graduates as a Cum Laude, when opposed to a person who studied at a university, the
employer would probably prefer the latter. Another example, is a serial killer who desires to kill.
Why would he desires to kill? It could be because he wants gratification from his victims, anger,
thrill- seeking, financial gain, attention seeking, and most of all, mental disorder.

However, a reason could exist without will. One example, a person could apply for a waitering
job for a reason that he needs money for a living. In this, we can say that this is out of his will,
he never desires to work while studying but for having no choice he has to. Another example is
a medical team who was asked to perfom euthanasia to a sick person. They will do it because
the family told them to and is out of their desires or will as a medical team. But in some sense,
the medical team only has the will to perform such things like mercy-killing. They have the
power only if it was instructed by the family of the sick person. In contrast, they wouldn't do
this without the consent of the family because they could be judged by the law.

2. Judging Our Moral Behavior

To be honest, I am a person who lacks obedience. When this news burst out, news patrols
aleady instructed the public to wash regularly, wear mask and avoid talking to a person too
close. And I resisted all of these things. But just a few weeks after the quarantine, I've come to
realize the wrongness of my deeds. Being an undergraduate 20-year- old, I don't have the
quarantine pass to go in and out of our barangay. I admit that I just do stay at home all day
long, feeding my younger siblings and just checking my social media accounts. I really don't
have a huge contribution in healing the country. But one time as I was scrolling on my fb
account, I perceived one thing. By just staying at home, I know I am contributing something for
my country. By just behaving and making self-quarantine as my business are big help for the
frontliners.

Our country nowadays, faces a problem which solution hasn't been found yet. The only thing
we can count on are the preventions we do to avoid the sickness. As a Filipino citizen, it is my
responsibility to stay tuned for every news update, and follow laws and orders. In this time,
where our community suffers from strong and exceptional virus, we should be in the state of
awareness and sensitivity. And I always pray for those who kept on disseminating wrong and
fake information, you should think of the people fighting for their lives, show your empathy to
others. Because they make themselves unreliable citizen, that's why I let God hear my prayers
and help them try to think of different ways that could help our community especially on how to
became resilient in this kind ofsituation. I also include people, making fun on the media
platforms, cascading false information, to let God help them stop, for it doesn’t help our
community. I always hope that they do remember what’s their essence as a human. And that is
to help other people and be that good instrument to show to people the importance of being
optimistic. All I can say is that, use our mind not just our ears and eyes to filter the accurate
information before you disseminate and spreading reliable information or news is easy, as long
as it’s done wholeheartedly. I pray because that's the only thing I could do for the world. There is
no luckier person in the world than the one who doesn't lose faith.
