1 Warm Ups
A bit of practice to get us into the groove of things. In each set of problems please try to working to help
enforce muscle memory of mathematical communication (I know it sucks, but its necessary).
As this is the first tutorial, I am unsure of how difficult to make these problems, or what areas in
mathematics you find interesting, so hopefully these will suffice for today.

1.1 Algebraic Techniques

1.1.1 Solve the following for x
1. x + 1 + 3x = 29
2. −1 + 6x − 4x = 11
3. −8 + 2x − 4x = −18

1.1.2 Worded Problem

James wants to go climbing at Rockit. He does some research and decides to buy some shoes for $100.
Each climbing session at Rockit costs $15. Find an expression that can be used to find the cost of climbing
for and number of days, say d.

1.2 Measurement and Geometry

1. The perimeter of a rectangle is 38m. The length of the rectangle is four more than two times the
width. Compute (find) the width.
2. The perimeter of a square is 800 inches. What is its area?
3. Calculate the volume of a sphere whose diameter is 18cm. Give answer to 2 decimal places. Useful
formula; V = 43 πr 3 .

2 Work Set
Complete the following problems. Again, working should be shown.

2.1 Algebra
2.1.1 Linear Equations

Consider the equations;

1. y = 21 x − 5
2. 4y − 2x = 6
3. −2x + 8 = y
For each equation, a) Find the value for x that makes y = 0. b) Find the value for y that makes x = 0.

2.1.2 Word Problem
Think of a whole number. Double it, then add 3. Multiply your result by 4 and then take away 5. Now
subtract the number you thought of.
Your answer will always be a multiple of which number?
