Exercise 1

A small shop receives a three-phase, 400 VLN, 50 Hz from incoming supply. The switch board
located at shop supplies fixed loads and socket outlet circuits as follows:
i. 10 units incandescent lamp, each rated at 60 Watts and 10 units of incandescent
lamps, each rated at 100 Watts.
ii. 6 units ceiling fan, each rated 80 Watts.
iii. Two 5 kW heater ovens.
iv. 1 units 1.5 hp air-conditioning.
v. 10 units of 13 A switch socket outlet, each rated 400 Watts
By applying diversity factor provided in Table 1,
(a) Calculate the total maximum demand for this domestic installation.
(6 Marks)

(b) Recommend the proper rating of residual current circuit breaker (RCCB). (Refer Table 2)
(4 Marks)

(c) Calculate the proper rating of each miniature circuit breaker (MCB) used in accordance
with the information shown in the Table 2. The wiring rule is restricted to the following:

- One outgoing MCB serving 10 lighting/fan point.

- One outgoing MCB serving 4 SSO 13 A
- One outgoing MCB serving 1 air conditioning / oven point.
(10 Marks)

Table 1 Diversity factor

Load Type Allowance (%)
Lighting / Fan 66 % of total demand
Switch socket outlet 100 % of first largest circuit + 40 % of
remaining
AC / heater 100 % of total demand

Table 2 Standard rating of protective device

Type of Protective Device Standard Rating (A)
MCB 1, 3, 6, 10, 16, 20, 25, 32, 40, 50, 63
RCCB/Main switch 40, 63
