They come in pairs, and you have to use both of them in different places
in a sentence to make them work. They get their name from the fact that
they work together (co-) and relate one sentence element to another.
Correlative conjunctions include pairs such as "both/and," "either/or
neither/nor," "not/but" and "not only/but also."

Introduction:

Grammar Rules for Active and Passive Voice

The use of active or passive voice is a fundamental distinction in

English, and one that causes trouble for many writers – including native
English speakers. Depending on the ideas you are trying to express and
the conventions of the discipline/journal in which you are writing, the
passive voice can be an appropriate, sophisticated, and even preferable
choice over the active voice. Nevertheless, the active voice is sometimes
a far better choice, and you may use both in the same article depending
on the context and content of your sentences and the section of your
paper you are writing. The following guidelines and examples should
help you in choosing between active and passive voice.

Active voice
Passive Voice
At the most basic level, the
The passive voice emphasizes active voice emphasizes the
the recipient of the action or person or agent who performs
sometimes the action itself an action, in short, the “actor

Passive: The interviews were conducted by two people who had no

relationship with New York City.

Active: Two people who had no relationship with New York City
conducted the interviews.

In this case, the authors want to emphasize the interviews – and how
they were conducted – as an element of their research methodology.
Therefore, the passive voice is an appropriate choice, although the
52

active voice would not be incorrect.

Passive: Atlas software was used for qualitative data analysis.

Active option 1: We used Atlas software for qualitative data analysis.

Active option 2: The researchers used Atlas software for qualitative

data analysis.

The first option is grammatically correct, but some researchers/writers

and journals prefer to avoid the use of the first person. Choosing the
passive voice is an easy way to avoid having to make a decision about
using the sometimes-questionable word “we.”

Passive: This research was approved by the ethics committee of the

Institute of Gerontology.

Active: The ethics committee of the Institute of Gerontology approved

this research.

Introduction:

It is more complicated when an indirect object (I) is added to the

sentence. In this case the word order depends a.) on whether the direct
and indirect objects are nouns or pronouns, and b.) on whether the
indirect object is preceded by the word to. Here are the basic rules:

Order of Adjectives!!! Learn how to put adjectives in the right order with
useful grammar rules and examples.

In English, it is common to use more than one adjective before a

noun. For example, “It is a beautiful long new dress.” or “She has
bought a square white Japanese cake.” When you use more than
one adjective, you have to put them in the right order – order of
adjectives.

Adjectives:

When more than one adjective describes the same noun, several
sequences may be possible

1. Determiners, if any: a, an, the, my, your, this, that, these, those, and
so on

2. Expressions of order, including ordinal numbers, if any: first, second,

third, next, last, final, and so on

3. Expressions of quantity, including cardinal (counting) numbers, if any:

one, two, few, each, every, some, and so on

4. Adjectives of judgment or opinion, if any: pretty, happy, ugly, sad,

interesting, boring, and so on

5. Adjectives of size or shape, if any: big, small, short, round, square,

and so on

shiny, and so on

7. Adjectives of color, if any: red, green, blue, and so on

8. Adjectives that can also be used as nouns, if any: French,

Protestant, metal, cotton, and so on
