Rules in Parallelism/Parallel Structure

There are several rules or principles related to sentence parallelism that you should be aware of
when constructing sentences for clarity and coherence. These rules ensure that the elements in
your sentences are structured in a similar and balanced way.
1. Parallel Lists: Items in a list or series should have the same grammatical structure (e.g.,
all nouns, all verbs, all adjectives).
Example:
Not Parallel: He loves singing, dancing, and to eat.
Parallel: He loves singing, dancing, and eating.
2. Parallel Comparisons: When making comparisons, ensure that the elements being
compared are structured in the same way.
Example:
Not Parallel: I like to read books than watching movies.
Parallel: I like reading books than watching movies.
3. Parallel Conjunctions: Elements connected by conjunctions like (for, and, nor, but, or,
yet, so) should be parallel in structure.
Example:
Not Parallel: She planned to collect data by either using an online survey or phone
interview.
Parallel: She planned to collect data by either using an online survey or conducting phone
interview.

4. Parallel Correlative Conjunctions: Elements connected by correlative conjunctions such

as “not only, but also” , "either...or" or "neither...nor" should also be parallel.
Example:
Not parallel: We can neither wait for something to happen nor can we take evasive
action.
Parallel: We can neither wait for something to happen nor take evasive action.

5. Parallel Phrases: Parallel structure shoul be used to balance a series of phrase with the
same grammatical structure. For example, avoid mixing noun phrase with verb phrases.
Examples:
A. Initial trial showed that expose to the chemical caused memory problems,
intermittent dizziness and prevents sleep.
(Parallel)B. Initial trial showed that expose to the chemical caused memory problems,
intermittent dizziness and insomnia.
6. Parallel Clauses- Parallelism is also applicable to a series of clause in a sentence.
Examples:
A.The report card stated that the student often talked in class, that he bullied other
students, and rarely finished his homework.
(Parallel)B. The report card stated that the student often talked in class, that he bullied
other students, and that he really finished his homework.

To have a clear view of parallelism, lets observe two groups of sentences, those which are
correct parallelism and those which have faulty parallelism.
Faulty Parallelism Correct Parallelism

5. It’s better to give than receiving. 5. It’s better to give than to receive.
(infinitive) (gerund) (infinitive) (infinitive)

Remember!
Maintaning parallel structure helps you avoid grammatically incorrect sentences and
improves your writing styles. Although lack of parallelism is not always strictly incorrect,
sentences with parallelism structure are easier to read and add a sense of balance to your writing.
To achieve parallelism, there must be the same grammatical structure among the elements in
your sentences. Simple uses of parallelism creat readable and understandable passages.
Sentences are best understood when structured in a grammatically parallel fashion.
