 esign brief
🔎 What?

❗Why?

Develop a design brief, which  You have to make a decision at this point in the project: What will you design and create,
presents the analysis of relevant  for whom and why. You want your decision to be based on sufficient background
research.  research.

⚙ How?
Research results summary
● Present the main results of your research (from A2) in a concise list of bullet points. This must be in your own words!
● Illustrate your take-aways with imagery wherever you feel this reduces the amount of writing needed. However, don’t
add images for the sake of adding images. Cite any images that you use.
● Cite (in-text) from the sources that you found your answers from. Use the proper MLA format.

DEFINITIONS  By consulting sources, I have found out:

● I have found out the difference between fabrics, textiles, and garments
● I have found out how to draw sewing patterns
● I have found out some methods people use to sew fabrics together
● I have discovered how to create different things by sewing

MANUFACTURING  By consulting sources about manufacturing cotton, I have found out:

● I have discovered that there are many complicated steps to making something as
simple as cotton
● I have found out about many different machines they use when manufacturing
cotton
● I have found out how cotton (something so simple) is hard to make and requires a
big team
● I found out many names of techniques and machines they use to make cotton

TECHNIQUES AND  By consulting sources such as, I have found out the following information that I can use for
TOOLS FOR MAKING  designing and creating my product:
● I have found out all of the materials and steps to make my product
● I have realised that sewing is not as hard as you think it is
● I have learned a few techniques to make my final product better
● I found out that my product doesn’t need as many tools as I thought it did

CLIENT INFORMATION  By consulting sources such as, I have realized the following considerations should be
taken into account when designing and creating my product:
● I realised that if I wanted to make this work for everybody, I would have to make
it a bit bigger than the biggest phone
● I realised that the colour could matter, it would just depend on who I was giving it
to
● I found out that I have to make as light as possible, or else it could damage the
charger
● I have realised that this is helpful, but it might not help younger children or people
who stick around their phone a lot. They might forget about it or accidentally
break it
● I found out that adults also might need this, I originally thought they were too
responsible and didn’t need this. I was very wrong

PRACTICAL SKILLS  By completing the practical skills tasks, I have learned the following skills (list & explain):
● I have found out how to button a button
● I have found out that not all sewing is hard, I found braiding to be pretty easy the
first time I did it
● I have realised that sewing isn’t hard as long as you focus and ask for help
● I learned the basics of sewing and now I am more confident in myself
The skills that will be useful for my project are (list & explain why):
● I will probably use a finishing knot so I can tie the garment together (you have to
wrap the garment around)
● I might use buttoning, but it will only be for decoration
● The last thing I might use is the basic hand sewing one, it might help me attatch
the hole bit on the top
The skills that I still need to practice or want to learn more about are (list & explain):
● I need to learn how to sew a snap (similar to button) because I chose the button
instead
● I may need to work on sewing a button, because I am not very good and it took
me about 40 minutes to finish it
● I need to work on sewing a basic hand sewing knot because I am not very good
at it, I also need it for my final product.

Works cited
● List any sources of information used in this section. Present in-text citations in your r esearch summary section to the
references listed in this section.

I didn’t use any sources

Project commitment
● State what type of product you are going to develop in your project in this unit and outline the direct practical purpose
of this product.
● Outline the bigger picture purpose of the product.
● Describe the client or target audience for whom you will develop the product.

Product and Purpose   In this project, I will create …

A basic phone charger holder.
The purpose of my product is…
To give people a safe place to put their phone when charging it.

Design Goal  My product will address the design problem of -textiles being quickly sent to landfills- by…
Reusing empty shampoo bottles, and old garments. Instead of throwing them away, we
are giving them to people who need them.

Intended   My product is intended to be used by …

Target audience  People with phones, or else it won’t work. Most people I would say need this, are 12-16
year olds. They usually don’t have a place to put their phones when charging, causing
them to break easily.

Target audience representative  I would describe my client as…

12-16 year olds, usually not younger children because they don’t usually have much
access to phones. Adults also need this but they are more responsible and won’t do it as
much.
Their needs and wants for the product are…
They want to have their phone at an accesible area and safe area, mainly because
teenagers usually don’t pay for their phones and worry they will break them.
