How to write notes on the staff:

1. The stem of a note goes downward at the left of a note


2. The stem goes upward at the right of a note

3. Stem goes downward when the note is on the 3 space or above
4. Stem goes upward when the note is on the second space or below

5. A note on the 3 line should follow the general direction of the notes to which it is a part.
6. The hook is downward when the stem is upward
7. The hook goes upward when the stem is downward

LESSON 2

Combining these two rules, if the stem of a note on a ledger line is drawn one octave in length and the stem
does not reach the middle staff line, then it is extended to that staff line:

Beat – it is an equal division of the measure


C or common C signature is equal to 4/4
Broken Measure – takes place when the beats of the first and last measures have incomplete number of beats. In a
simple meter, each beat in a measure can be broken into two equal parts. For example in 3/4 time the quarter note is
used to count the three beats in each measure. The quarter note can be halved into eighth notes, therefore 3/4 is a simple
meter.
