LEADERSHIP
I believe that leadership is the ability to be honest and true to yourself enough take risks and
being able to make others believe in their capabilities. My leadership experiences started at
home. Being a sister of three young siblings in my family exposed me to responsibilities and
commitments that developed leadership skills in me. In my everyday life I had to speak out
for my siblings, to watch over them and also to influence them positively by being a good
example. Now that I have completed my undergraduate studies with outstanding academic
performance and working for the community they look up to me with a desire of achieving
even better. The experiences I had based on training, volunteering and research during my
studies at the University exposed me to the challenges that communities face in day to day
life. This made me use my influencing skills to initiate some of my colleagues to establish a
non-governmental organization which was successfully established. The goal of the
organization is to initiate sustainable development in my country which is facing a lot of
challenges as a developing country to reach the global sustainable development goals. In
2016 I was awarded a certificate for my valuable contribution to the environment and
community at Ardhi University.
Leadership is also about choosing the right path over the easy one. Being a female
engineer/scientist can be very challenging in my country. Not choosing to quit despite the
challenges I experienced from my education to my carrier level, has developed in me a
desire of wanting to do what is right or what I love despite the challenges. Even though I
have demonstrated some of my leadership experiences I strongly believe that studying in
the UK through the Chevening Scholarship will facilitate me to obtaining outstanding
leadership skills and potential to bring to my home country for sustainable development. For
me this is a life opportunity I would never want to miss.

NETWORKING
As humans we have a nature to dream, aspire and wanting to move forward. Most of the
time life conditions and experiences require us to network and use leadership and
influencing skills to reach our destinations. For this reason I continually broaden my network
through my profession and extracurricular contacts. Networking and community interaction
with different people from different cultural backgrounds all over the world has made me
improve my communication skills and add Spanish as my extra language for
communication. This has in turn given me more friends who are trying to learn and know
Spanish. I help my friends practice through regular contacts in Spanish and it has always
been my pleasure seeing them improve.
During my studying I joined roots and shoot club, where I volunteered to work on different
activities based on community development and animal protection. I connected with many
people who share same goals and it was great to work together to serve animals and
community. In 2013 I was awarded a certificate by the Jane Goodall Institute for my valuable
contribution to animals and community while being a member of roots and shoot.
At my current position I have been attending different platforms and training to establish a
better professional connection and skills. By using such opportunities this year 2018 I
became certified as an international Road Assessment Program (iRAP) supplier in
Tanzania. I am also a registered member of Institute of Engineers Tanzania (IET) an
umbrella of Engineers in Tanzania. Through its various activities such as annual engineers’
day, conferences, seminars and workshops, I have interacted with a number of leading
engineers in the country. I have also been able to connect with many of my fellow women
engineers. Furthermore, I have been able to use that opportunity to create a group on social
media for women engineers so as to keep in touch and updating one another on different
issues as women and as engineers. It has been 5 months now and the group has about 80
women engineers. As a group of women Engineers we have been able to conduct
awareness creation seminars for young girls in Secondary schools at Dar es Salaam on
international day of the Girl child (11th October 2018). The aim is to promote girl
empowerment and inspire young girls to take engineering/science fields.
During my studies in UK I plan to extend my network to other industries and with people and
professionals from different nation to make my network more diversified. Through my
established networks both in Tanzania and in UK I will be the nexus between these two
countries to foster cooperation and bring about sustainable development to my country.
After the completion of my award I will keep in touch through email and other social
networks so as to maintain a close contact. I will be happy to organize local and international
events in cooperation with other Chevening Alumni. This will be a great opportunity to
autonomously discuss and exchange knowledge and information.

STUDYING IN UK
Being an Environmental Engineer has exposed me to different environmental issues in
Tanzania through field work, research and training with different NGOs and other
development-aid organisations. Environmental condition of an area has significant effect on
population in it, protecting the environment is also protecting the health and safety of the
population and enhancing sustainable development. Tanzania is very rich in resources her
economic growth depends greatly on its environmental and natural resources, according to
UNDP with more than 80 per cent of the population remaining dependent on them for
income generation. Despite their importance, critical challenges remain, threatening the
sustainability of the environment and natural resources. Some of these challenges include
the unsustainable harvesting and use of natural resources, degradation of and
encroachment on water sources, and the environmental impacts of climate change. All of
these combined can seriously undermine the country’s sustainable development goals
including poverty eradication.
Furthermore, health burden due to poor sanitation and hygiene in Tanzania has been
significant. According to WHO endemic infection diseases in Tanzania have greatly been
caused by poor sanitation and hygiene conditions. Nearly half of all people in Tanzania have
no clean water, and less than a quarter have a descent toilet. Environmental condition of an
area can greatly affect the health and safety of population in it. Sustainable environment and
natural resources is critical for Tanzania’s public health protection and poverty eradication.
For this reason I decided to pursue a master's degree in the area of “Environmental
sciences and development” at the university of Aberdeen which is among the top 10
universities in UK for environmental science and ecology ranked number 1 for overall
research excellence, also the University of Sheffield which is among the top 20 UK
universities. The Universities I have applied to will provide me with best quality education.
The courses I have selected will provide me with advanced research and analytical skills
also extend my knowledge in ecology, catchment management, environmental planning and
application of assessing tools/approaches for policy planning and implementation. This
scholarship will afford me the opportunity to being trained to act as a development catalyst in
attaining the country’s sustainable development goals by contributing the acquired
knowledge and skills. The Master’s program I have applied will provide me with practical
knowledge and skills to address different Environmental issues in my country which will help
to reduce poverty and strengthen public health which are among the sustainable
development goals in Tanzania. For me this is a lifetime opportunity to gain experience and
give back to my country.
Conclusively I look forward to have gained exposure and acquired skills set to bring to my
home country. I positively look forward to be awarded this scholarship to actualize my dream
of enhancing myself professionally and contributing to a better developed Tanzania and
Africa at large.

CAREER PLAN
In my country there are many UK priorities, however my area of interest is “Environment
management and sustainable development” which also lies among the UK priorities. It has
been my dream to be part of the nation's development in my country through the field that I
am most able in Environmental Management. The courses that I have applied are more
practical and will provide me with much experience on Environment. My immediate plan on
returning to my country is to register to the National Environment Management Council
(NEMC) as an Environmental expert. With experience I have got from my undergraduate
study and that obtained from my Master's will qualify me to get registered as an
Environmental Expert in Tanzania.
In the five (5) years following the completion of this award, I shall strive to utilize the
knowledge, experiences and skills gained from this qualification as a young female
professional engineer to propose solutions to Environmental problems, by policy planning
and community participation. My greatest desire is to see Tanzania attain Environmental
stability, public health protection, better economic and living standard. Within this period of
time, I will strive to consolidate my profession and proficiency in my chosen field of
endeavour. I shall willingly provide accurate information to Chevening that will help in
gauging the impact I am making towards development.
After years of practicing my career and strengthening professional expertise, I hope to
venture into entrepreneurship by establishing local consulting company with specific focus
on Environmental conservation and sustainable development. Being in a community where
females are considered weak to take science/engineering professionals, I look forward to
engage in the training of young and aspiring female individuals so as to encourage them to
take science/engineering studies and to work towards their dreams because they come to
reality in due time. Therefore, I look forward to serve as a transfer medium to enable them
acquires such skills, thereby empowering them in the process. This would be my way of
giving back to the society and promoting sustainable development in my country.
