THE HISTOGRAM TO REPRESENT STATISTICAL

DATA
A histograms or frequency histograms are made up of rectangular bar with the bases on
the horizontal axis and centre at the class marks.
Note:
Frequency are represented on the vertical axis while class marks on the vertical axis.
Consider the table below:
Class 11-20 21-30 31-40 41-50 51-60
interval
Frequency 4 7 10 6 2
Represent the information above using the histogram.

Solution:
The frequency distribution table
Class Class Frequency
interval marks (x) (f)
11-20 15.5 4
21-30 25.5 7
31-40 35.5 10
41-50 45.5 6
51-60 55.5 2

Graph:
The graph of the histogram should have the following:
 The heading in capital letters
 The constant scale on both horizontal line and vertical line
 The frequency on the vertical line and class marks on the horizontal line
Now the graph;

THE HISTOGRAM

Example:
The table below shows the frequency distribution of scores for mathematics monthly
test results.
Class 50-54 55-59 60-64 65-69 70-74 75-79
interval
Frequency 6 12 20 15 10 5

Solution:
The frequency distribution table
Class Class Frequency
interval marks (x) (f)
50-54 52 6
55-59 57 12
60-64 62 20
65-69 67 15
70-74 72 10

MONTHLY TEST RESULTS.

EXERCISE:
1. The following distribution table represent the age of ten (10) students in years.
Represent the information in a histogram.
Age 13 14 15 16 17
Frequenc 1 4 2 2 1
y

2. The following are the results of Geography weekly test in form two class.
Class interval 1-15 16-30 31-45 46-60 61-75 76-90
Frequency 2 18 30 26 20 4
Draw the histogram to represent the above information.

THE FREQUENCY POLYGON TO REPRESENT

STATISTICAL DATA
A frequency polygon:
Is the line graph of class frequency plotted against class marks.
In a frequency polygon, one class interval is added below the lowest interval and
another one above the highest interval and they are assigned zero frequency.
For example, consider the table below:

Time 30-35 35-40 40-45 45-50 50-55

(min)
Frequenc 3 6 10 5 3
y
Solution:
The frequency distribution table
Class Class Frequency
interval marks (x) (f)
25-30 27.5 0
30-35 32.5 3
35-40 37.5 5
40-45 42.5 10
45-50 47.5 6
50-55 52.5 3
55-60 57.5 0

Graph:
The graph of the frequency polygon should have the following:
 The heading in capital letters
 The constant scale on both horizontal line and vertical line
 The frequency on the vertical line and class marks on the horizontal line
 The points which have been added below the lowest interval and above the
highest interval should be joined using dotted line.

Students 8 6 6 3 2

Draw the polygon to represent the above information.
