ULTRASONIC TESTING AND ACCEPTANCE STANDARD

FOR FABRICATED ARMATURE SHAFT

1. SCOPE:
This testing procedure lays down the procedure, evaluation
& acceptance standard for the ultrasonic examination of
the weld joints of fabricated armature shaft.
2. SURFACE CONDITION:
Ultrasonic testing shall be carried out after complete
welding & the surface shall be fully dressed.

3. EQUIPMENT:
Kraut Kramar models, viz - USIP 10 W:USIP 11, USK5, USM -
2MT, USL 35.
Equipments of other makes/models may be used provided it
is proved that their characteristics are equal to or
better than the above mentioned equipments, as per
B.S. 6072.
4. PROBES:
Miniature Angle beam probe of 45 deg. 4 M Hz or 2 M Hz
(MWB 45 N 208N4)
Miniature normal beam probe of 4 M Hz (MB 4 SN).
5. COUPLANT:
Oil or Polyall paste.
6. CALIBRATION AND SENSITIVITY:
Calibration shall be carried out in accordance with
BP 085 01 76 using ASME calibration block of appropriate
thickness.
Distance amplitude correction curve shall be established
with 3.2 iron diameter hole.
Distance amplitude curve need not be made when testing
welds at half skip distance or when testing with normal
probe. Also distance amplitude curve need not be made
using equipment having automatic distance amplitude
correction.
7. TESTING PERSONNEL:
Ultrasonic testing shall be carried out by qualified
personnel, conversant with & having adequate experience in
ultrasonic testing.
8. EVALUATION:
8.1 Butt .Joint of barrel-weld Joint No. I
I) Calibrate time-base of equipment using miniature
normal beam probe.
II) Set the amplitude of the 3.2 mm diameter hole of
the calibration block to full screen height.
iii) Scan the entire weld as shown in figure - I.
1v) Relevant indications from the weld that exceeds
the reference level shall be noted & assessed as
per clause 9 - below.
v) Calibrate time-base of equipment using miniature
angle beam probe of 45 deg.
vi) Using the 3.2 mm diameter reference hole of the
calibration block within half skip distance, set
the amplitude of this hole to the full screen
height. Establish a distance amplitude curve by
picking up the 3.2 mm diameter hole at different
depths. This shall serve as a reference level.
vii) Scan entire weld covering at least upto a full
skip as shown in the Ftg.I.
viii) Relevant indications from the weld exceeding the
reference level shall be noted & assessed as per
clause 9 - below.
8.2 Weld between Disc & Barrel - Weld Joint No.2
I) Using a 45 deg. miniature angle beam probe
proceed as per clause 8.1 (V) & (VI).
II) Scan the entire weld by moving the probe from the
edge of the weld to full'skip distance as shown in
Figure 2.
ill) Indications from the unfased portion of the nose
shall be discarded.
1v) Relevant Indications from the weld exceeding the
reference level shall be noted & assessed as per
clause 9 - below.
8.3 Weld between Disc & Shaft - Weld Joint No.3
I) . Using a 45 deg Miniature angle beam probe proceed
as per clause 8.1 (V) & (VI).
II) Scan the entire weld by moving the probe from the
edge of the weld to full skip distance as shown in
Figure 3,
iii) Indications appearing just after half skip & after
full skip shall be investigated & properly
interpreted, since such Indications may appear due
to the weld reinforcement which may be Interpreted
as defect indications.
1v) Relevant indications from the weld exceeding the
reference level shall be noted & assessed as per
clause 9 - below.
8.4 Weld Joint of End Plate to barrel - Weld Joint No.4
I) Using a miniature normal beam probe proceed as per
clause 8.1 (V) & (VI).
II) Scan the entire weld by moving the probe from the
edge of the weld to full skip distance as shown in
F1gure-4.
III) Relevant indications from the weld exceeding the
reference level shall be noted & assessed as per
Clause 9 - below.
9. ACCEPTANCE STANDARD:

Following defects are unacceptable.

Cracks, lack of fusion & lack of penetration, irrespective
of amplitude & magnitude.
Individual slag line more than 2/3 "T* or 19 mm in length
whichever is smaller. Group of slag inclusion, in a line,
if aggregate length is more than 'T* in a weld length of 6
*T" or proportionate length in case of weld length less
than 6 'T' except when the distance between two successive
imperfections exceeds 3 *L'
Note: 'T1 = Thickness of Weld.
'!_' = Length of the longest imperfection in the
Group.
