Learning Points

The Present Simple Tense and the Present Continuous Tense

You use the Present Simple tense to talk about routines - things that don't change.

You use the Present Continuous tense to talk about actions that are happening now.

Examples:
• I play soccer every day.
• I am playing soccer now.

Review of Asking and Telling the Time

You use this question to ask a person about the time:

Ann: What time is it?


Tom: It is 5 p.m.

You can also use the Wh-question word when:

Ann: When is the meeting?


Tom: It is at 10 a.m.

Look at the chart for saying the time at different times of the day.

o'clock use this to tell the time

noon 12 o'clock in the afternoon

midnight 12 o'clock at night

a.m. the time between midnight and noon.

p.m. the time between noon and midnight.

Examples:
• It's noon. I'm hungry.
• It's midnight. I have to go to sleep.
• The school starts at 9 a.m.
• I have dinner at 8 p.m.
