ALARP (As Low As Reasonable Practicable) is one of the fundamental principles of risk management. We
neither need nor want to manage risk to the point where we eliminate it, because doing so is simply not a good use of
resources. i.e. the point where the costs exceed benefits. Engineers are often required to make decisions on
investments in risk reduction measures; however, at certain point not all investments are justified by the risk reduction
achieved. A cost Benefits Analysis can help make wise investment decisions. This course is aimed at providing
fundamental knowledge and concepts of ALARP & Cost Benefits Analysis (CBA).
1. The purpose and importance of ALARP and its implication on engineering design.
3. Identify further risk reduction measures that can be implemented in the design to reduce risks to ALARP.
