Oil tankers have become indispensable to modern


international industrial economy. Dedicated to the
movement of liquid commodities in bulk, these
vessels demand specialized knowledge and
techniques from the personnel who take them out
to sea.

A basic introduction to Oil Tankers

• In 1878, the first ship to use the hull as an oil tank


was built. It was called the "Zoroaster".

• The first steamship designed and built to carry


petroleum in bulk was put into service in 1886. This
was the “Gluckauf” (Good luck), built in England .

• She was a small ship, 300 feet, long with a deadweight of


3020 tons.

• She was the prototype of the modern tanker.

• With steam driven pumps segregated from cargo tanks by


steel bulkheads.

• And with the engine room at the after end, separated from the
cargo tanks area by cofferdams formed by twin bulkheads.

• This pattern of construction has not altered significantly.

Tankers for Transportation
m.t Jahre Viking was the largest ship afloat in 1999.
She is 458 meters [1,503 feet long] long, with a beam
of 69 meters [226 feet]. The hull extends 25 meters
below the water-line. When it is fully loaded with
crude oil, she has a gross tonnage of 565,000 tons.
