I. EXPERIMENT MOTIVATION

To determine the specific heat ratio γ =Cp/Cv for air.

II. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS

1. Measurement result:

H = 250mm
Trial L1 (mm) L2 (mm) h = L2 – L1 (mm)

1 291 229 62

2 290 230 60

3 292 228 64

4 293 227 66

5 294 226 68

6 291 229 62

7 292 228 64

8 290 220 60

9 294 226 68

10 293 227 66

10
Ĺ1=¿292 Ĺ2=228 1
h́= ∑ hi=¿ 64
10 i=1

We have: The uncertain of h

10

Hence
Δh=
√ ∑ (h́−h i¿)2
i=1
10
=¿ ¿
2.8 (mm)

h=h́ ± ∆ h=64 ±2.8 (mm)

2. Calculation
H
- The formula: γ=
H−h
250
γ́ = =1.3 4
250−64

Since H is constant therefore:

∂r 2 H 250
∆ γ =γ́
√( ∂h ) =γ́
( H−h )
2 = 1.34× ( 250−64 )2 =0.01

Hence:

γ =γ́ ± ∆ γ =1.3 4 ±0.01

- Theoretically, we can calculate the specific heat ratio of air by using the
i+ 2
formula γ = i where i=5is the Degree of Freedom (DOF) of ideal gas (in
this case it is air). So we get:
i+ 2 5+ 2
γ= = =1.40
i 5

Conclusion: The experiment result is a bit different from the theoretical

result due to instrumental uncertainty, observational uncertainty and
environmental uncertainty.
