INTRODUCTION

Surveying is the science and art of determining the relative positions of various points
above, on or below the surface of the earth. The relative positions are obtained by measuring
horizontal and vertical distances, horizontal and vertical angles using various surveying
instrument.

Survey camp was capable for us to know how to apply and analyze the concepts that we
have gained in theory to actual practice in field. Such a fine opportunity was provided for
sixth semester students by Civil Engineering department of NIE. The survey camp was
conducted for a period of 6 hours from, where we learnt about handling the instruments like
Total Station(TSI) and Differential GPS(DGPS), providing alignment for highway and water
supply projects, and finally project processing and modeling was done with the help of
AUTOCAD CIVIL 3D software.

The survey camp was conducted in the site located at Hadajana, Mysuru.

The survey camp was composed of field work and office work, where preliminary survey
was conducted and control points were established in the field for highway and water supply
project with help of TSI and DGPS, then the points are inputted to the software in the office
and alignment and mapping of work had been obtained as the output of the project.
INSTRUMENTS USED

1. Total Station

A Total Station is a modern surveying instrument that integrates an electronic theodolite with
an electronic distance meter. The total station determines the actual position (X, Y and Z) of
surveyed points or the position of the instrument from known points, in absolute term. Total
station are operated using a multifunction keyboard which is connected to microprocessor
built into the instrument. The microprocessor in the total station can perform a variety of
mathematical operations, for example averaging multiple angle measurements, averaging
multiple distance measurements, calculation of coordinate, atmospheric and instrumental
correction, and it helps to store the observation directly using an internal memory.

TOTAL STATION INSTRUMENT REFLECTOR

Data collected and processed in a Total Station can be downloaded to computers for further
processing. Total station is a compact instrument and weighs 50 to 55 N and easy to carry
oneself.
Components of Total station

● Electronic Distance Measurement(EDM)

● Electronic theodolite

● Microprocessor

● Data collector

● Data storage

● Prism(reflector)

Advantage of Total Station

▪ Onboard memory to store data

▪ Compatibility with computers

▪ Auto level compensator

▪ Ability to work in lesser visibility

Functions of Total Station

⮚ Setting out distance, angle and coordinates

⮚ Remote elevation measurement

⮚ Missing line measurement

⮚ Alignment and ranging

⮚ Resection

⮚ Contour mapping
⮚ Offset measurement

Specifications of the total station are expressed in terms of range, accuracy and data
storage. Accuracy of total station is always related with error. However, surveyor  should
check the working condition of the instruments before using.

2. Handheld Global Positioning System (GPS)

Global Positioning System (GPS) is an enhancement to Global Positioning System that

provides improved location accuracy, from the 15-meter nominal GPS accuracy to about 10
cm in case of the best implementations. GPS refers to using a combination of receivers and
satellites to reduce/eliminate common receiver based and satellite based errors, reduce orbit
errors, ionospheric errors, tropospheric errors and receiver clock errors.

Working principle of handheld GPS

GPS technology receivers locate the transmissions of at least four satellites and combine the
information of these four satellites in order to know the exact location or the receiver's
position on earth.

1) Handheld GPS uses one or several (network) fixed ground based reference stations (in
known locations).

2) The base station compares its own known location, to that computed from a GPS
receiver.

3) Any difference is then broadcast as a correction to the user. Correction signals can be
broadcast either from ground stations, or via additional satellites.

After applying suitable corrections, the receiver gives the coordinates (X, Y and Z) of the
required
HIGHWAY ALIGNMENT

The position or the layout of the center line of the highway on the ground is called highway
alignment. Highway alignment includes both horizontal and vertical alignments of the
roadways. Alignment must be selected in such a way that the overall cost during construction,
operation and maintenance is minimum. Road design outputs are in the form of following
drawings:

Plan: Includes center line, structures, Right of Way (ROW), carriage way, shoulders, side
drain.

Longitudinal Profile: Soil Type, Depth of cut, Height of Fill, Side drain (Information on
from which chainage to which chainage), Direction of flow in the drain.

Cross section: Ground Level, Formation Level, Super elevation, Area of Cutting and Area of
filling thus computation of the volume and then cost estimation can be done.
Requirements of Highway Alignment

The ideal alignment must have the following requirements:

Safe: The alignment need to be safe during construction, operation and maintenance

especially at slopes, embankments and cutting.

Easy: The construction materials if present at the place of construction makes the

construction easier. Similarly, it should be easy during the operation of vehicles with easy
gradients and curves.

Short: The distance between the initial and final point need to be short so as to reduce the
construction cost.

Economical: The alignment should be economical during construction, operation, and

maintenance. However, if the construction turned out to be economical, the gradient may not
be easy which in turns increases the cost of operation and maintenance. Similarly, if the
vehicle operation is taken under consideration and is made economical, the construction cost
becomes higher as the gradient and curves need to be easy.
Comfort: The alignment should be fixed such that it provides comfort to the drivers and the
passengers.

Stages of Engineering Surveys for Highway Alignment

✔ Map study
✔ Reconnaissance survey
✔ Preliminary surveys and
✔ Final location and detailed survey
The first three stages consider all possible alternate alignment keeping in view the various
requirements of highway alignment. The fourth stage is meant for the detailed survey of the
selected alignment.

SOFTWARE APPLICATION

The software analysis part is the most important to provide the alignment for highway or
water supply. It helps to know the virtue of alignment with its advanced techniques. So,
Autodesk’s AutoCAD Civil 3D software is used for this purpose. The control points taken in
the field through total station is given as input for the software and the final drawings are
obtained as output. It helps to provide the most economical alignment.

Autodesk’s AutoCAD Civil 3D

AutoCAD Civil 3D software is a civil engineering design and documentation solution that
supports Building Information Modelling workflows. It is used for designing, drafting and
documentation, analysis, defining workflows, surveying and mapping of civil projects, these
projects fall under the three main categories of land development, water and transportation
projects; river development, port construction, canals, dams. Embankments, and many others.
Civil 3D is used to create three dimensional (3D) models of land, water, or transportation
features while maintaining dynamic relationships to source data such as grading objects,
break lines, contours, and corridors. As an industry-leading building information
modeling(BIM) solution, civil 3D is well known in the civil engineering community and
widely used on a variety of infrastructure projects both large and small.

Benefits of AutoCAD Civil 3D

Individuals who are currently using AutoCAD or plan on learning AutoCAD will inherit
many benefits of using Civil 3D. Civil 3D was originally created to be an add-on for
AutoCAD but as it popularity and demand grew, it was further evolved developed into a
stand-alone product-built on the AutoCAD platforms. Civil 3D offers a familiar design
environment and many AutoCAD-compatible shortcuts and with true DWG(drawing) file
support. Civil 3D allows you to store and share design data with existing AutoCAD users.
With 3D projects, changes to drafting and annotation are automatically reflected throughout
the model for quick and efficient visualization that remain sync as you make design changes
at any stage of the process. A popular use of civil 3D is its integrated survey functionality,
which offers a consistent environment for survey tasks and allows for raw imports of survey
data, adjustment of least-square, survey observation edits, and the automatic creation of
survey figures and surfaces. Civil 3D offers many other beneficial tools and features that can
enhance projects such as pressure networks, corridor modeling etc.

EARTH WORK COMPUTATION

Earth work computation is a part of preliminary survey. It generally includes computation of

total filling and total cutting work along the length of proposed route
to estimate the cost, and overall expenditure of the project on the filling and cutting work.
The proposed alignment is so chosen that the total earth work, that is cutting and filling is
reduced to a larger extent without affecting the standards on the unevenness on road specified
by Indian standards.
In this case earth work computation is done along the either edges of the road since the
project is on widening of existing road. He Earth work computation is done along the either
edges of road by assuming the extension width to be 3.5m on either side. The earth work
computation is based on the assumption that the level of existing existing road is at the
elevation of +700m. Also the computation does not consider the corrections due to
longitudinal slope and camber.
CONCLUSION

The survey project provided students an experience of field work involved in surveying
which included topographic maps design of highway and water supply projects.

Learning the basics of software used for all above helped the students and exposed them to
improve logical and creative mind

The overall survey project provided the best on field and off-fieldwork experience which is
very essential to improve skills in students.

It helps to provide the most economical alignment
