CHEMISTRY YEAR 09 Class activity sheet-29 (Introduction to electrolysis)

Lesson objectives:
By the end of this lesson, about 70% of the learners should be able to:
 Define Electrolysis, and electrolyte.
 Classify solutions as electrolytes or non-electrolytes
 identify particles responsible conduction of electricity in solutions and solids.

Recap of previous lesson:

What can you recall about the last lesson?

Prompt for prior knowledge:

What do you know about electrolysis?

Electrolysis
- An electrolyte is able to conduct electricity because it contains electrically charged particles
called ions. The ions must be free to move.
- An electrolyte is a molten (fused or liquid) compound or solution of a compound that
conducts electricity.
- In electrolytes, ions are responsible for the conduction of electricity.
- The solid form of a compound does not conduct electricity because its ions are not mobile.
- Any solid that conducts electricity has free mobile electrons.

ACTIVITY 01:
(a) When each of the following household chemicals is added to water, it behaves as shown.
Table salt: NaCl(s) + water → Na+(aq) + Cl-(aq).
Table sugar: C12H22O11(s) + water → C12H22O11(aq).
Spirit: C2H5OH(l) + water → C2H5OH(aq).
Vinegar: CH3COOH(l) + water → H+(aq) + CH3COO-(aq).
La croix: NaOCl(s) + water → Na+(aq) + OCl-(aq).
Baking powder: NaHCO3(s) + water → Na+(aq) + HCO3-(aq).
Classify each of the household chemicals as an electrolyte and explain.
