Should cars be banned in Cities?

It depends. There are actually a lot arguments that could be raised in answering this
question. Air pollution is for one is the main reason why cars should be banned. Research
says that 75% of all carbon monoxide pollution is created by motor vehicles. Areas with
high levels of this pollution have seen a rise in asthma, mental health problems and as
well as crime rates. On the other hand, there are disadvantages as to banning the cars in
cities. If we ban cars it would be harder for people to get to work or it will take longer.
Also people would have to carry all of their groceries home. What if they buy too much
stuff? They can’t just carry it home! Also, what if you get injured or something minor but
needs medical attention, it will be impossible to walk on the way to a hospital.

There are always two sides of the story. Many things have to be considered before a
change to this extent can happen. As I’ve mentioned, one big reason for this is pollution
and the environment. Cars have effected the environment and their pollution from the
time cars was invented. The pollution that comes from cars is made up of carbon dioxide,
carbon monoxide, ozone, and many more substances that can affect the human health.
From a persons point of view banning cars would be great for they would become more
fit and healthier from walking. But always take into consideration that there are places
that establishments are located really far apart and would really take a longer time to get
there. For example in the Philippines, I’ve lived here for 29 years and I could really say
that it’s impossible to get to work or school on time without cars even getting out of the
house 1 hour before the scheduled time. But there are places especially those highly
urbanized one that would only take minutes to get to their destination even just by
walking. In Hong Kong for example, you can literally get from one end of the city to
another without much effort to the utilization of public transportation, cover walkways.
Negating the use of private vehicles.

From those two cities I’ve mentioned, I think it’s better if we can have the public
transportation like the buses or trains so we will no longer need the private cars. If only
the government can think about this thoroughly, we can have a much cleaner
environment. But this is a huge change that needs to be examined and studied by experts
because as I’ve said, there are a lot of things that needs to be taken in consideration.
