The Oldest Forests on Earth

The oldest forest on earth are none other than the tropical rainforests. These rainforests are
largely found in Southeast Asia, South America and Africa where the weather is hot and humid all
year round. The rainforests consist of four layers known as emergent, canopy, understory and forest
floor. Each layer is home to a great variety of plants and animals.

At the highest layer is the emergent. There is a lot of sunshine here. Giant trees grow with
broad leaves that are evergreen. The trees in this layer can reach up to 200 feet high. Eagles, monkeys,
bats and butterflies are among the many animals that make their homes here.

Beneath the emergent layer is the canopy. Most trees that grow in this layer have smooth and
irregular leaves. This layer is often described as a maze of trees and branches that form a canopy 60 to
90 feet above the ground. Rare animals like spider monkeys, orangutans, toucans and sloths are some
of the occupants of this layer.

The understory layer lies between the canopy and forest floor. There is little light in this layer
so most plants have large leaves to catch the sunlight. The plants here rarely grow taller than 12 feet.
The understory layer is an ideal habitat to countless insects like bees and bullet ants. Interesting
animals like golden tree boas, red-eyed tree frogs and salamanders can be found here too.

The forest floor as the bottom layer is a dark place. Very few plants can survive the darkness
and moisture except for the low-lying ferns, mushrooms and ginger. Giant anteaters, snakes and
scorpions are some of the animals that live here.

Why My Mother Is My Best Friend

Many of my friends have best friends around our age, mostly teens. For me, my mother is my best
friend. Here are some reasons why my mother is the best kind of friend to have.

I am a competitive swimmer. This means that I train for long hours. From Monday to Friday, my
training begins at 5.30 a.m. and continues after school. During the weekends, my training hours are
longer. Throughout my training, my mother drives me around tirelessly without any complaints. She
always spends time talking with me when we travel. We talk about school, food, fashion and
hobbies like any other best friends would.

I rely on my coach for guidance and performance in sport. However, it is my mother who takes care
of my body and mental needs. She keeps me healthy by making sure I have a healthy diet.
Sometimes, she gives me a special treat to food that I like even when my coach disagrees. She says a
happy mind makes the body do wonderful things. I feel she really knows me better than I do myself.

When I suffer pain from my training, the only person can I talk to is my mother. I do not feel shy
telling her about the pain I get from training. She never looks down on me or says that I need to
toughen up. Instead, she will check the pain to make sure it is not serious. Then she will teach me
how to manage it.

A friend in need is a friend indeed. My mother has been more than just a friend in need as she is
