Chapter 1, The Unvanquished Truth

From whose point of view is this written? – We don’t know yet, 1st person, someone who is
remembering when he was a kid.

Not a happy childhood— but we don’t know why—his grandparents love him, put him in
daycare where he first met Kevin.

Who did Max live with as a child? His grandparents, his mother’s parents.

What was his nickname in pre-school/day care? The Kicker in pre-school/day care.being a kicker
in daycare is a clue that something is not right--

In 3rd grade, He was called derogatory names (Maxi pad) by kids in school “until I persuaded
him otherwise” what do you think he did to persuade him otherwise?

What else do you know about max—he was in L.D. class.

How do we learn that Max’s mother is dead? he tells of overhearing grandparents in the kitchen
talking about his father who married their dear departed daughter. Sounds as if Max didn’t
really know either one of them.- no tone of sadness.

When did Max and Freak meet? – the summer before 8th grade- he moved in down the block

Kevin: Hooked on robots and only two feet tall, but already he knew what he wanted.--- do you
know what YOU want?

Who is Freak’s mother? The Fair Gwen of Air.– Max gets things mixed up—he’s L.D.

Chapter 2: Up from the Down Under

Where does Max “live”? in the basement he calls the “down- under”

What did Grim have when he was a kid that Max does not have? – a sling-shot

Max says he doesn’t have any “ideas” – he is in the LD class and believes he is dumb.

How does max describe their backyard? your basic chunk of chain link heaven-= Is Max
HAPPY with his life? how can you tell? Why ?He calls his grandfatherGrim- he calls himself
butthead, describes his basement as smelly and backyard—can’t mow dirt.

Summer after 7th grade, max is clumsy!!

His first meeting with Kevin: Kevin is bossing around the movers; he’s afraid his computer will
be broken, and Max recognizes him from daycare. When Max sees him and asks him to
“identify” himself, Max is so stunned and clumsy he doesn’t answer, and Kevin points his crutch
at him and says “die earthling.” Max is scared of him—Kevin REALLY wants him to die!!

DOES Kevin really want him to die? Kevin is playing around. The fact that Max thinks he’s
serious and wants him to die is reflective of Max’s state of mind. Something is bothering him, but
as of right now we don’t know what—the fact that he lives with his grandparents should give us
a clue as to something being not quite right. WHY does Max live with his grandparents?

Predict: What do you think Max’s father did that makes Grim so nervous?

Chapter 3. American Flyer:

Max is scared by Kevin pointing the crutch at him and calling him earthling- not necessarily
scared for himself, but that this is tooooooo weird.

 The importance of first impression! what is Max’s first impression of Kevin? What is
Kevin’s first impression of Max?

The 1st time Max calls him a freak “the little freak” is when he is dragging a wagon out from the
house and trying to get something out of a tree. Why does Max call him a freak? – he’s looks
really weird—“normal” head, little body, braces/crippled, talks funny- robot boy, calls him
earthling, can’t jump,

He puts Kevin in the wagon and tows him over to his house. Kevin seems to enjoy it. Max
doesn’t talk much, would rather show him the down – under than tell him about it.

Chapter 4. What Frightened the Fair Gwen:

Kevin is able to get down the stairs by himself, but it out of breath as he gets there. He likes
Max’s room in the basement. Kevin explains that he eats upstairs with his grandparents.

How are Kevin and Arthur alike? His description of King Arthur in Chapter 4.– Arthur was a
wimpy kid destined to be great! Kevin is a wimpy kid, too—is he destined to be great?

Why does Kevin get so excited talking about the knights of Arthur’s round table? – because they
were the first human version of robots and he really loves robots/computers/etc.

According to Kevin what is the difference between books and television? With books you can
figure out what’s true and what’s fake. Do you agree or disagree?

If you don’t read, according to Kevin what CAN”T you do? – figure out what’s real. Do you
agree or disagree? Why?

Does Max like to read? why or why not? No- he has a learning disability. But doesn’t want to
explain it to Kevin.
“I gotta beam out of here.” what connection is he making? – With star trek,,, he’s nuts about
robots and outer space, mentions the space shuttle having a robot arm.

What scared the Fair Gwen? Max—the look of Max, the size of Max.– a clue—why should
Gwen be so scared of him?

Chapter 5. Spitting Image

Where does Max go after Kevin’s mother takes him home? back to his bedroom, under his bed
and in his head—someplace. Do you think it’s a good place for Max to spend his time? why or
why not?

Why is there getting to be less and less space under Max’s bed? Is that all in his head cause he
goes there to daydream?

Gwen had called to apologize for being so shocked when she saw Max, and Gram tells Max that
Gwen and his mother were good friends a long time ago, while they were both pregnant with
Max and Kevin. Max says: I don’t really like Gram to know how much I remember about way
back then.” – a clue that something must be bad—Max works these little clues into his
narrative so subtly that it’s difficult to notice that’s what he’s doing.

Why does Gwen invite Max over for supper? – to apologize for running off with Kevin.

Gram says it wasn’t Max who scared Gwen but she doesn’t say who or what DID scare Gwen

Gram calls Kevin “that poor boy” – because he is crippled.

Max says he is not “poor” why? – he knows how smart Kevin is.
Who is right?

At supper, Gwen is so nervous she runs all her words together and says that she never could
abide by the Max’s mother married—Max’s father. Max doesn’t comment on her statement that
she didn’t like his father. Why not?

Where did they all live when they were young and first starting out? – in the tenements- why?
because it was cheap rent.

FREAK/KEVIN tells Max that he is the spitting image of his father. How does Max feel about
that?

Why was Gwen afraid of Max? – because as he grows he looks more and more like his father.
And his father is in prison. Everybody knows about it, what he did, and why he’s in prison and
they all act like it’s a big secret.

At this point it is a big secret for the reader. All we know is that “he” Max’s father, made it
difficult for his mother to have friends after they got married.
Max mentions that Gwen doesn’t flinch away when he hands her the knife. It must be important
to him, so what could that tell you?

What does Max do when he gets home that night? – cries like a baby.He says he’s happy- had a
great evening with Kevin and his mother, so why does he cry like a baby? – because the
realization of the evening has hit him. He has a friend, and the underlying stress of Gwen
knowing what happened – why his father is in prison- is exhausting—

Chap. 6 Close Encounter of the Turd Kind

What does Max say the 4th of July is like? edgy, picnics/bbq’s fireworks, kids running around.
Fun and excitement and this is the first year he goes to the fireworks without Grim and Gram.
He is going with Kevin and they run into Tony D. and his gang. Tony—tough guy Tony.Kevin
starts away and tells Max to come on and ignore him. Kevin disses Tony D. to his face and Max
laughs out loud at his audacity. Max fears he will get beat up and a police car comes around the
corner. Tony and his group move on.

Kevin makes a comment and this chapter is titled “that was a close encounter of the turd
kind.” which makes the connection to alien contact that being a “close encounter of the third
kind” (also a movie) being an encounter with an animate being that is associated with a UFO.
Play on words, turd/third and implication that Tony D. is not human.

Kevin doesn’t know it, and asks Max after they finish laughing, but Max would NOT be able to
win a fight against Tony D. When Freak realizes they would have had to fight the whole gang, he
start laughing again—that they got away with it.

Max picks him up when he falls down laughing and he is surprised at how light Kevin is. Later
while watching the fireworks, Kevin can’t see, so Max picks him up and puts him on his
shoulders.

Chapter 7 Walking High Above the World

After the fireworks, Max heads them over to the food carts, hoping to get some lemonade. Kevin
exclaims how cool it is to be tall (on Max’s shoulders) and he can see—what he sees is Tony D
and his gang. Kevin begins to ride Max as if he is a horse, giving him directions by kicking him
with his feet on the right and left. They are surrounded and run through the crowd. Tony D and
his gang are going to get them. Kevin’s plan is to run into the pond.

Freak shouts warp speed and other reference to SCI Fi.

Max goes into the pond. The Blade follows them into the pond. They’re all covered with mud.
Blade and his gang start throwing rocks at them. At first the rocks are too heavy and fall short
then they get smaller rocks. Max and Kevin are stuck when the police come by. Kevin gets their
attention and they throw ropes in to pull them out.
Max is recognized as Kenny Kane son. We learn Kenny Kane is a killer, killer Kane. Kevin
makes up the name Freak the Mighty.

Chapter 8 Dinosaur Brain

Max is afraid he’ll get in trouble with his grandparents for running into the pond but the police
make it sound like he is a hero for saving Kevin. Gram and Grim both make a fuss over him.
They don’t know that it was really Kevin who saved them—teamwork—Kevin’s brain, Max’s
body—we need to work at what each of us does best.

Kevin gets his first REAL cup of coffee from his grandfather—represents that Grim thinks he’s
a man now and can drink coffee. This is the first time that Max feels respected by his
grandfather. – Grim calls him “son.” and Gram is looking all sentimental like a television show.
Max promises to run whenever he sees Tony D. What’s the difference between running away
and taking evasive action to avoid confrontation?

Differences in personalities: Kevin is a get-up-and-go type of guy, Max likes to sleep in.

Dragon isn’t really a fire-breathing monster, but a symbol of fear of the natural world, an
archetype of the unknown. : what other symbols are in the book? – the cup of coffee from
grim symbolizes that Max is a man (to grim). What other symbols are there in life?Kevin is in
the habit of giving Max a dictionary to look up words.

Chapter 9: Life is Dangerous

Max describes the game they play every day where Max walks and Kevin rides.

Kevin directs him to go east and they walk for what seems like miles.

What does Kevin mean when he says Yonder always lies over the next horizon?

Where does Kevin direct Max to? – The medical research portion of the hospital.

Bionics: the science of designing replacement parts for the human body. But Kevin tells him that
he will get a whole new body—only bigger, “normal sized”

Why does Kevin show the research unit to Max? He tells him he’s going to get a bionic body

Max says, “I can tell he really means it. This isn’t a pretend quest… the place is important to
him.” How is Kevin going to get a bionic body?

How does Kevin anticipate dealing with the pain of getting a new body? – pain is a state of mind
you think yourself out of it.

Chapter 10 Rats or Worse

They go on a quest for a treasure in the sewer. How do they prepare and why? —have to go at
night wearing black clothes and cover their faces with soot; they don’t want to be seen.

Kevin gives Max his mother’s blouse to wear in the dark. How big, then, is Max? Is he as “BIG”
as he says he is? Max is going into 8th grade, he’s about 12 or 13 years old so being able to
wear an adult woman’s shirt doesn’t make him HUGE! His size is partly his own perception.

What is in the storm drain? It smells like something dead—rats or worse, the title of this chapter.
How did the purse get in the storm drain? One of Tony D’s boys threw it down there, after-
probably stealing it.

What do the boys find inside the purse? An identification card with a lady’s name on it. Her
name is Loretta lee and Kevin believes she is a damsel in distress. Max finds out the next day
that she is a damsel who causes distress.

Chapter 11 the damsel of the distress.

Loretta lives in the new tenements, but Max calls them up the new testaments. Max is told never
to go there. They are returning the purse. They are hoping for a reward. Max knows the only
people lived in the testaments are poor people and dope fiends. Max and Kevin are finding their
relationship to be mutually beneficial Kevin doesn't have to walk, where his leg brace or carry
his crutches, and Max likes having a smart and on his shoulders.

Consider why Kevin says sometimes it's OK to break a promise when you're on a quest.

Max is learning not to ask too many questions. He doesn't want to look things up in the
dictionaries.

Both Max and Kevin are shocked at the conditions of the testaments. Kevin thinks they should
go back home; Max thinks she really needs the ID card.

Max and Kevin are both afraid of the two people who come out to the hallway to get a
newspaper. Max tries to back away and Iggy comes towards him. Loretta thinks somehow, Max
looks familiar. Max and Kevin admit they are looking for Loretta lee.

What is Max’s “eureka” moment: He realizes he should have known the name-- Iggy is the boss
of the Panhandle motorcycle gang. Kevin tosses down the purse and Iggy tells them to come in
the house. Even though they don't want to, they go inside.

Now, both Loretta and Iggy think Max looks familiar. Iggy gives them the third degree about
who they are and where they found the purse. Iggy gets a little rough, flicks Kevin in the nose,
demands to know their names, and Loretta tells him to lighten up a little.

Iggy tries to swindle the boys—asks them where the money was and Loretta says there was no
money in the purse.
Finally!!! Loretta figures out how she knows Max—and Iggy agrees. They celebrate with a can
of beer. Kevin seems clueless as to what all is happening.

What scares Max more than Iggy? The fact that Kevin seems to not know what’s going on.
Kevin should know EVERYTHING!!

Loretta then figures out who Kevin is and remembers when both boys were born.

What did Kenny do a couple years later—he “does his thing” and he’s in the yard, doing time.

Iggy seems to back off once he realizes who Max is? Why? – Killer Kane, what a tough hombre
he was! He’s afraid and doesn’t want to mess with Killer Kane’s kid.

Kevin doesn’t know anything about his father and acts interested when Loretta says she knows
him too, and is insulted when she says that he was a magician and disappeared when Kevin was
born.

Apparently Kane is imprisoned for “life” but according to Iggy—“life isn’t life” what does he
mean by that?

What about the “luck” from rubbing a dwarf’s head—and Loretta doing this—insulting!!

Chapter 12 Killer Kane, Killer Kane Had a Kid Who Got No Brain

Compare father’s – Kevin’s ran off and Max’s is in prison. Which is worse?

Once at home, relieved Kevin says his father DID run off, and he doesn’t seem bothered by it.
“good riddance to bad rubbish.” Then they make fun of Loretta and Iggy but they don’t talk
about Max’s father—“Killer Kane” Who did Kane kill?Should have figured it out by now.

How does Max feel about school? it’s like getting jabbed with a needle.

Gram takes him on a shopping trip to buy school clothes and they are all “celebrating” that he is
growing up… the only good thing is that he gets to have all the same classes as Kevin. He
overhears Gram and Grim talking about maybe he will be better off because he has a friend and
that might be what he’s always missed was having a friend, when he had all those special
classes.

Max and Kevin continue to walk together in school as “Freak the Mighty”

The English teacher asks Max to stand up and tell the class something about his summer. The
classmates laugh and tease- Max doesn’t do things like talk in class—

Kevin stops the chaos and says he’s “more than Kevin” sometimes. As an example he gets on top
of Max’s shoulders, and tugs him to stand up. Soon they are all shouting “Freak the Mighty” and
they get sent to the office (for the first time) together.
Chapter 13 American Chop Suey

Max is impressed that he actually knows an answer in English class—Kevin has been teaching
him how to read a whole book and for some reason it’s making sense to him.

Review characters: Mr. Meehan & Mrs. Donelli—teachers Reading skills and English.
Mrs. Addison is the principal.

Mr. Meehan just thinks he’s lazy and if hanging out with Kevin improves his attitude then great.
Mrs. Donelli changes the way she teaches him and asks him the questions during study hall
alone.

Kevin taught him that reading is just speaking on paper, so he can understand other people’s
words, but there is no way he can put his own words on paper. Mrs. Donelli is determined to get
Max to write.

Max gets called to the office, and Kevin is NOT allowed to go too. Why is Max scared? He
thinks maybe Gram has died, He’s told that everyone is ok. Then he thinks he’ll be put back in
the L.D. classes and he adamantly refuses. Mrs. Addison finally gets around to saying it’s not
about school, but about his father. What about his father? There has been a request forwarded
from the parole board from his father. He feels like he’s back in daycare (nickname Kicker).
What does Mrs. Addison promise him? She will talk to the parole board and his lawyer that Max
will not have to do anything in connection with his father.

THEN, at lunch they have Chop suey and Kevin LOVES the stuff,,,so when Max goes to get him
a second helping he comes back to the table and Kevin is choking. – or “he can’t breathe.” the
school nurse yells to call an ambulance gets him to start breathing again.

Mrs. Addisoncommiserates with Max on his bad day and Max says that Kevin is the one who
had a bad day. This is another sign that Max is growing up and getting healthy from his past
experiences. He is able to think about others, and not just himself.

Chapter 14 Cross My Heart and Hope to Die.

Max gets to stay home from school the next day because Kevin is coming home from the
hospital. He asks to carry him inside and Gwen says yes, but he HAS to stay in and rest all day.

They talk again about Kevin getting his new body- Kevin says that he’s looking forward to
getting it and his Dr. – Dr. Spivak says it will happen in a year or two. Why does Kevin have to
get this new body? - because he is growing on the inside but not on the outside.

Everything goes along fine until Christmas vacation. What are Gram and Grim yelling about?
Grim says he has to protect the family and Gram says there will NOT be a gun in the house.
What does Gram think will happen if he has a gun in the house? ‘he’ will take it away from
Grim and do the shooting.Max figures out they are talking about his father- Killer Kane.

Since the murder happened only eight years ago, why would he be let out now—according
to Grim? -- cause he’s fooled them (the parole board).

Grim comes downstairs to talk to Max: He explains to Max that his father did not escape, but
that he is up for parole. Grim explains that he got a restraining order, and Max says maybe he
should get a gun. Grim asks him to stay in the house for the next few days—he promises he will-
cross my heart and hope to die—this is ironic because he just might die— also, this is one
promise he will not break.

Chapter 15 What Came Down the Chimney

Christmas Eve: wonderful food and Gwen and Kevin are having dinner with them. But Kevin
can’t eat too fast. They tell stories of Christmas’ past and Grim continues telling tales—they’re
not lies—lies are mean and tales are to entertain.

They open one present each—and Max opens Kevin’s Dictionary.

He wakes up and his room is cold – he’s dreaming of a snowman Kevin and thinks he hears the
wind, but it’s really someone breathing. who holds him down and tells him not to say a word,

“I came back, Like I promised.” WHO came back? Kenny Kane

Chapter 16 A Chip Off the Old Block

Max’s father has come back. he says it’s time he got to know his son who had his mind poisoned
against him by his grandparents. Max is forced to sit up and remain quiet; he doesn’t know if
Grim bought that gun or not, and he doesn’t know what would happen if he did have one and
came downstairs to use it.

Kenny tells Max that he never killed anyone. Max is not surprised that he is there. He always
imagined that that is how his father would come back. He feels numb in his whole body. His
father takes him out the “bulkhead” door- to the backyard. There is snow on the ground, but he
doesn’t feel the cold even though he doesn’t have on a coat or jacket.

He notices the lights at Kevin’s house are out—the stars have clicked off—When they get under
the streetlight, they stop. Max’s father gets a good look at him and says he does look like him.
He touches Max’s face gently and Max agrees that everyone tells him he looks like Kenny.
Kenny keeps denying that he killed anyone… that “they” shouldn’t have kept him away from his
own blood family for a crime he didn’t commit.

What does he compare the people in the neighborhood to? hamsters just spinning around on
their little hamster wheels and blames them for poisoning Max against him.
Is it the snow on the objects lying around the yards of the testements or his disconnected
thought processes because of his father’s return that gives Max a “new” Perspective?

They enter the apartment of Loretta and Iggy. Did Iggy and Loretta know that Kenny would
come? Yes-- Iggy bolts the door and pulls the curtains … Loretta “if anyone could pull it off –
you could.”

Why doesn’t Kenny want anyone drinking—he’s “turned over a new leaf” while in prison. Max
finds it hard to believe – the way Iggy is behaving, that he is the head of the motorcycle group
thePanheads and everyone, including police are afraid of him!! Iggy is going to take them to
some place to hide-out.

Chapt. 17 By All That’s Holy

Iggy takes them to an old lady’s apartment. She is gone to visit family for the holidays. The
apartment smells like perfume and cats.

Why does Kenny tie Max up? He doesn’t trust that he won’t run

Is Kenny telling the truth?Another lie—he’s wiping tears from his face but he has no tears in his
voice.

Why can’t Max go back to sleep? he was trying notto think about things he didn’t want to
remember.

Chapter 18 Never Trust a Cripple

Time passes, Max watches his father sleeping on the floor and thinks of the giant who is tied up
by little people. Max hears skitter steps and Kenny wakes up quickly- Loretta comes into the
room. What does she bring them for breakfast? Pizza Kenny tells her to get Iggy. He’s critical of
the left over pizza, and won’t let Max eat it.

Kenny tells Max his plans: they are going to leave for warmer temperatures, buy an big RV and
Max will get dressed up and stand on the corner begging for money. After Max finishes eating
breakfast, Kenny ties him up again, Why? as a precaution.

The police had been at Iggy’s apartment, he told them they couldn’t come in without a warrant,
but did let them a good look from the doorway. What does Kenny accuse Iggy of? Turning on
him. Who did Iggy say called the police? “the crippled kid”

Chapter 19 Into the Black Down Under

Kenny compares the cops to what? bugs—not too smart but lots of them and they keep at it.

They move from the old lady’s apartment to a burned out building across the alleyway. They go
down into the black cellar. What does Kenny tie Max to in the basement? a tipped over boiler..
Max notices movement beyond the dirty window- who/what is it? Loretta lee.Loretta tries to get
him untied and tells him that Iggy is supposed to keep Kenny busy while she’s there. What
happens when Loretta goes back to get the flashlight? Kenny catches her and starts strangling
her. How does Max respond? He is horrified and keeps repeating that no one can stop him, no
one can stop him. He is reverting back to 8 years ago when he saw his father kill his mother. he
felt helpless then, he feels helpless now.

Chapter 20 Freak the Mighty Strikes Again

He starts screaming at him to stop—he says, “I see you, Daddy, please stop.”

Would Max call Kenny “daddy” ?no—he hasn’t called him anything at all and he is afraid
of him. Daddy is a name a young child calls their father, not a teenager. A teen would call
him dad. He is reverting back to when he saw Kenny kill his mother and he was helpless to do
anything about it.

Why does Kenny stop strangling Loretta? Because Max continues yelling that he saw it and he
remembers, he never forgot. He doesn’t believe that Max could remember what happened when
he was only 4 years old, but Max tells him he saw it and he does remember

How does Kenny respond when Max tells him that he broke a window and hollered for someone
to come help? He tells Max that he wishes Max wouldn’t have done that- it cost him years and
he begins to tighten his grip on max’s neck.

Who comes through the window to rescue Max and Loretta? Freak What does Freak tell him is
in the water gun? sulfuric acid and he shoots him in the eyes. Kenny screams, Max grabs Freak
and runs with him up the stairs. They blast their way upstairs and outside into the snow where
they meet up with Iggy and the cops.

Freak is ecstatic: what did he have in the water gun? water and soap and curry powder.

What does it mean when Freak gives Max a thumbs up? —“Freak the Mighty Strikes Again.”

Chapter 21 The Accident of Nature

They all go to the police station, then the hospital to get the bruises checked out, then back to the
police station. How did Grim feel when he saw the double tracks in the snow? horribly
frightened.

They’re saying that Kane will be locked up for good now, with the new charges. Loretta is called
the Heroic Biker Babe, by the newspapers. He has a cracked bone in her neck but she will be ok.
Iggy is all worried about Loretta and Max realizes that he maybe isn’t such a bad dude after all

Max sleeps upstairs now- cause gram is so worried about him. and he doesn’t mind not sleeping
alone there, anyway.
Gwen tells Kevinhe must be EXTRA careful, now because he is having trouble catching his
breath. He goes to the medical research place more frequently. He says he is knows by doctors
all over the world and that the bionic research for his new body continues.

How do they feel when they learn that Kane struck a plea bargain and will return to prison? Grim
is relieved. Max is glad he doesn’t have to go to court to testify, but he is still worried. Why does
Grim tells him not to worry? Because Kane was an Accident of Nature and all Max got from
him was his looks. Everything else- his heart- and that’s what counts - was from his mother.

Chapter 22 Remembering is just an Invention of the Mind

The last day of school. “Walking high” on their way home from school—no more dangerous
quests so as to not worry Gwen. Freak asks him if he remembers what it was like back in the ice
age and Max says, no- he can’t remember that because it was long before he was even born. Max
says—That is something I’ll always remember, him saying that and me trying to figure it out.”
Why does Max say that? What does that sentence tell you is going to happen?

What are they celebrating this summer? Kevin’s birthday- he is 13 years oldand the birthday of
Freak the Mighty who is almost a year old and on his way to 9th grade.

Why is Gwen giving Kevin a computer for his birthday? so IF he has to stay home from school,
Max, at school with another computer can communicate with him

What happens after dinner? Freak has a seizure &the ambulance is called.

Chapter 23 The Empty Book

Max walks to the hospital to visit Freak, he goes around back and sits under a tree. Gwen finds
him == she’s been crying, and tells him that Kevin wants to see him and they have permission
from the doctor.

Kevin is in the ICU- lots of wires and tubes, and a tracheotomy.

What does Kevin mean when he says he’s not coming home in his present manifestation? –
He knows he’s going to die, and is playing “the game” as a comfort to both himself and to
Max.

Kevin tells him he will be having surgery. – to get his new body and Max admits he’s scared..

What does Kevin tell him to do with the empty book? Fill it up with their adventures. Write
down all the things they’ve done. Why can’t Kevin do it himself? Because he’ll be getting used to
his new bionic body. Max has to leave a moment later when Kevin starts coughing and the
doctors all come in.

Chapter 24 The Return of Kicker

What clues tell Max that Kevin has died? One says, “Get Dr. Spivak, Kevin “WAS” her patient”
and Max notices other nurses crying.

Dr. Spivak finds Max and tells him she will bandage his hand. Max thinks that Dr. Spivak lied to
Kevin about getting a new body, but Dr.Spivak tells him that she couldn’t lie to Kevin- Kevin
knew about his condition and knew he wouldn’t have a long life. He invented the bionic body as
a fantasy, as something to hope for. Kevin wasn’t a liar, he was a survivor.

Dr. Spivak tells him, finally, his heart just got too big for his body.

Besides his heart his insides growing too big for his exterior, how else was Kevin’s heart
“too big”? -- he thought about other people- MAX, all the time. He gave to Max the gift of
reading and friendship and faith in himself that nobody had ever been able to give Max.

Chapter 25 What Loretta Said

Why did Max miss Kevin’s funeral and Gwen’s moving away? He just stayed in the “down
under” for days and days.

grim says: most of us go all the way through life and we never have a friend like Kevin. So
maybe you should count yourself lucky.

He goes back to school. everyone feels sorry for him—like he was the one who died. Tony D.
even came up and apologized to him. but he said if he ever feels sorry for him again he’ll pound
him into the millpond so they’re enemies again just the way Max likes it.

One day in winter he sees Loretta Lee with a neck brace and boozy breath. Loretta tells Max that
Gwen is in California and has a new boyfriend, is doing well. Max tells her he is doing “nothing”
these days and Loretta says, “Nothing is a drag, kid. Think about it.”

what does she mean and why does Loretta say “nothing is a drag, kid.”

Max does think about it, all the way home. and when he gets home he takes out the empty box
and asks who does he think he’s kidding. He hasn’t got a brain and he writes that down. and he
keeps writing, and he’s ok about remembering things. and he realizes he has written a book. and
now maybe he’ll even read a few.

Freak the Mighty Pre-reading Activity

Friends: Making friends and keeping friends is important at all ages of life, but for the pre-teen
and teen social pressures can make finding the right kind of friend difficult. This activity will
explore what students look for in a friend and allow discussion as to what we value in a friend.

1. Have students free-write for five minutes on their “Best Friend.” Who that person is; how they
became friends, etc.

2.Students will move around for this activity.Move desks/tables so students have plenty of room
and begin with students in a group in the middle of the roomYou will need two pieces of paper;
on one write “Agree” and on the other write “Disagree.” Tape them to opposite sides of the
classroom.

You will read a list of criteria for friendship. As each item is read ask students to move to stand
near the “agree” or “disagree” signs. (You can have degrees of agree and disagree if you want to,
just put a couple ½ way marks on one wall between that say “somewhat agree” and “somewhat
disagree”).

Once the students have settled near their opinion sign, have them discuss among themselves why
they have that opinion. Open up whole class discussion on each item as interest in that topic
becomes important to either a group or individual. Continue through the list given, which is by
no means the only criteria. Make up your own criteria or have students make up criteria.

• I like to be friends with someone who is the same size as me.

• I like to be friends with someone who has the same color hair as me.
• I like to be friends with someone who wears the same style of clothes as me.

to or departs from the text or script, evaluating the choices made by the director or actors.
RI.8.8. Delineate and evaluate the argument and specific claims in a text, assessing whether the
reasoning is sound and the evidence is relevant and sufficient; recognize when irrelevant
evidence is introduced.

character types from myths, traditional stories, or religious works such as the Bible, including
describing how the material is rendered new.

Range of Reading and Level of Text Complexity

RL.8.10. By the end of the year, read and comprehend literature, including stories, dramas, and
