The University of Minnesota is the birthplace of one of the most important twin studies in the
world. It started in 1979. Thomas J. Bouchard had already been on the faculty of the
university for some time when he began his study of identical twins. Bouchard read an article
about a set of twins who had been separated at birth. The twins had recently met and had
found many similarities. They found out that they had lived near each other for years.
Bouchard was amazed by the twins’ story and decided to start the Minnesota Twins Reared
Apart Study. Bouchard began to study sets of twins that had been separated at birth. Over
the years, the Minnesota Twins Reared Apart Study has studied more than 8,000 sets of
twins. The study continues today.

THIRD CONDITIONAL
The third conditional is used to talk hypothetically, but specifically about an event in the
past. It’s a useful way to think about how a situation could have been different if life had
taken another direction. We also use this to express our regret or happiness about how
things went.
Note:would can be replaced by could or might.

How to make it:

We make the third conditional by using the past perfect after 'if' and then 'would have'
and the past participle in the second part of the sentence:

 if + past perfect, .. .would + have + past participle

If I hadn’t forgotten my umbrella yesterday, I wouldn’t have gotten wet.

(Si no hubiera olvidado mi paraguas ayer, no me habría mojado)
If she hadn’t stolen that money, she wouldn’t have been arrested.
(Si ella no hubiera robado ese dinero, no habría sido arrestada)
• If I hadn’t come to Colombia, I wouldn’t have learnt to dance salsa!
(Si no hubiera venido a Colombia, ¡no habría aprendido a bailar salsa)

Otra característica de los condicionales es que el orden de las dos frases se puede
cambiar. Si empezamos por la condición (If) las separaremos por una coma. Si
empezamos con la frase que expresa el resultado no hace falta poner la coma.

If I had known your reaction, I wouldn't have told you.

Si hubiera sabido tu reacción, no te lo hubiera dicho.
I wouldn't have told you if I had known your reaction.
No te lo hubiera dicho si hubiera sabido tu reacción.

A VERY LONG LIFE
Read the text and answer the questions.
Timothy the tortoise was about 160 years old when he died at his home near Exeter in
November 2005. Timothy, whose early life was spent at sea, was thought to be the oldest
resident in Britain at the time.

He was found by a British naval officer, Captain John Courtenay Everard, on a Portuguese
ship in 1854. Everard, who was a relative of the Earl of Devon, adopted him and he
became the mascot on a succession of British ships for nearly forty years. In 1892 he went
to live at Powderham Castle, which is the historic home of the Earls of Devon, and in 1935
he was given a permanent home in the castle’s rose garden.

Throughout his long life, Timothy showed a keen instinct for survival. During the second
world war, for example, he felt the vibrations from the bombs that the Germans were
dropping on Exeter and made his own air-raid shelter under some steps. He was also very
healthy, never needing to see a vet until the last year of his life.

At the time of his death, Timothy was owned by Lady Gabrielle Courtenay, who is the aunt
of the current Earl of Devon. Lady Devon also lives at Powderham, where Timothy was
given a family funeral and was buried in the grounds of the castle.

GREAT INVENTIONS, GREAT RISK

Looking back over the long history of mankind, we can’t but admire the capacity of the
human being to dominate his enviroment and to create ways of making his life easier. But
we have also witnessed how many of his own inventions have turned against him because
of misuse or due to their nature.
In fact, no one would doubt that the automobile has actually made life easier by making
transportation faster and bringing the world closer. However, if it hadn’t been made to run
on gasolina, the world wouldn’t be as polluted; cars are actually one of the most polluting
agents in the world.
As such, when we think of major changes such as the Industrial Revolution, we can’t deny
the fact that this gave way to the mass production of goods, creating employment and
decreasing cost. But if man hadn’t concentrated on the money he could make,we wouldn’t
have had such as a repressive, consuming society, and wouldn’t have seen the work of
man so dehumanized.
1. What is the author´s point of view? Do you agree?

What is beauty?
Everyone has a different opinion about beauty. What one person considers beautiful or
attractive, someone else might fid strange or ugly. Here are some examples of cultures
from around the world that have very different ideals of beauty.
In the Karo community from Indonesia, it’s considered beautiful for women to have scars
on their chest and stomach. A Karo girl starts to receive the scars at a young age. When
the scars are complete, she is ready to get married and have children.
In the Kayan community in Myanmar, in South-East Asia, women wear rings round their
necks as a sign of beauty. Girls begin to wear the rings at around fie years old, and more
are added as they grow older. Older Kayan women have longer necks than usual because
of this. The Maori are the native people of New Zealand. A man is considered to be a
better warrior and more attractive to women if he has tattoos, especially if the tattoos are
on his face.
In Mauritania in West Africa, large women are considered beautiful – the larger, the better.
Being slim is a sign of poverty, and is considered unattractive. Young girls eat a lot of food
to become large.
Everyone has a different opinion about what makes someone beautiful. But it’s important
to remember that the person you are on the inside is more important than how you look.
As we say in English, ‘beauty is only skin deep!’
