SI Session Plan

(Attach handouts used)

SI Leader: Bruno Dos Santos SI Session Date: September 9, 2015

Course: BSC2085 Course Instructor: Lovelace

Objective: What does this group most need to accomplish in this session? Become familiar with
cellular anatomy and physiology, transport mechanisms, protein synthesis and mitosis.

Possible Topics/Material: Brainstorm all the topics and material from lecture, readings, and
homework that you think students should study.

1. Anatomical terms
2. Chemical level of organization
3. Cellular organization

Prioritize your Brainstorm: Since you only have 50 minutes, you must decide what material is good
for an SI session and what material the students should study at home. To do this, think about the
material and its relative importance and difficulty and list the topics in the appropriate quadrant.

Difficult Not As Difficult

Important Anatomical terms
Chemical level of organization
Cellular organization

Not As
Important

How to Cover Material: Plan your sessions using the grid above. Typically, “warm up” using the
“Important but Not as Difficult” quadrant. This brief exercise will assess that they truly know the
basics and will make them feel more confident. Then the main focus (“work out”) of the session will
be in the “Difficult and Important” area. Think of what strategies and techniques you will use to help
facilitate their learning of that material. Finally, during the “Cool Down”, an exercise that pulls it all
together is fitting.
Now here’s My Plan…

Content to Be Covered Technique to Be Used

Warm Up
(1-3 min) Testing techniques Group Discussion

Work Out Anatomical terms Clusters: Group will create questions for
(48-44 min) Chemical level of organization larger group
Cellular organization

Cool Down
(1-3 min) Questions? Group Discussion

What I am facilitating that is NOT solving problems: Discuss learning techniques and strategies 

Agenda: Remember to place this on the board at the beginning of the session.

SI Session: Suggested Home Study:

Let’s get started! Get together w/study group – review class notes

After Session Comments/Thoughts: Briefly discuss how the session went vs. how you planned it
(good things, not so good things, any adjustments needed for the next session, etc.)
