Introduction
A torsional pendulum, or torsional oscillator, consists of a disk-like mass suspended
from a thin rod or wire. When the mass is twisted about the axis of the wire, the wire
exerts a torque on the mass, tending to rotate it back to its original position. If twisted
and released, the mass will oscillate back and forth, executing simple harmonic motion.
This is the angular version of the bouncing mass hanging from a spring. This gives us an
idea of moment of inertia. We try to calculate the moment of intertia of a ring given the
moment of a disc. We can also verify the perpendicular axis theorem and compare it
with theoretically calculated values
A body suspended by a thread or wire which twists first in one direction and then in the
reverse direction, in the horizontal plane is called a torsional pendulum. The first torsion
.pendulum was developed by Robert Leslie in 1793
,
difference between simple pendulum and torsional pendulum
A tensional pendulum is an oscillator for which the restoring force is
torsion. In a simple pendulum, the oscillating mass has dimensions
much smaller than the distance between the axis of suspension and
the centre of gravity. ... A tensional pendulum is an oscillator for
which the restoring force is torsion.
The period of oscillation of torsion pendulum is given as,
Where l =length of the suspension wire; r=radius of the wire;
n=rigidity modulus of the suspension wire
Substituting (2) in (1) and squaring,we get an expression for rigidity
modulus for the suspension wire as,
But from equation (1) ,
Applications of Tensional Pendulum:
1.The working of " Torsion pendulum clocks " ( shortly torsion clocks or
pendulum clocks), is based on torsional oscillation.
