CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION

1.1. Nature and Importance of Field Practice

Agricultural engineers do a variety of activities in and out of the farm. To

name a few, these activities include aquaculture, farming, forestry, developing

biofuels, environmental conservation, planning animal environments and finding

better ways to process food1. So, to expose students in actual agricultural engineering

works which they will be dealing in the future, a field practice is conducted. A field

practice provides the student the opportunity to view situations set in a worldly

framework and be involved with real situations in the field. Through this, the

student’s awareness broadens and connections between ideas and practical realities

are given emphasis2.

In connection with that, the Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Engineering

degree program at the Visayas State University, Baybay City gives students in

agricultural engineering an option to conduct a field practice in an agency or company

that engages in agricultural engineering works for at least two hundred forty (240)

hours.

The student practitioner chose to conduct her field practice at the Maintenance

Department of the DBSN Farms Agriventures Corporation located at Barangay

Antipolo, Albuera, Leyte.

Hence, the choice of conducting a field practice in the above-

mentioned agency will give the student practitioner the experience and
2

opportunity to observe and conduct actual activities relevant to agricultural

engineering.

1.2. Objectives of the Field Practice

The general objective of the field practice is to assess the different

activities at the Maintenance Department of the DBSN Farms Agriventures

Corporation which are related to agricultural engineering.

Specifically, the field practice aimed to:

1. Familiarize the various operations at the Poultry Dressing Plant of the

DBSN Farms Agriventures Corporation;

2. Assist in the different assessment and maintenance operation

procedures of the different machinery in the Poultry Dressing Plant of

the DBSN Farms Agriventures Corporation;

3. Assess and conduct research in the Rendering Plants and Wastewater

Treatment Facilities of the DBSN Farms Agriventures Corporation;

and

4. Document other activities at DBSN Farms Agriventures Corporation

where the field practitioner was involved.

1.3. Time and Place of Field Practice

The field practice was conducted at the Maintenance Department of the

DBSN Farms Agriventures Corporation located at Barangay Antipolo,

Albuera, Leyte (Figures 1 and 2) from June 10 to July 26, 2019 during office

hours from 8:00am–12:00 noon and 1:00-5:00 pm.
