4.0 ACTIONS
4.1 After the pipeline is successfully pressure tested, request for water extraction for
flushing, Method Statement and drawing to be submitted and approved by
ADDC/Consultant. Once the approval and agreed date & time are obtained, flushing
can be commenced by using potable water.
4.2 For the distribution lines: Air valve locations may be used as chlorine feeding points
and washout as sample flushing point.
4.3 Connect D.I. pipeline network to existing pipelines, open the valve to feed the new
network.
4.4 Water for sterilizing and flushing shall be provided by the Contractor. For this purpose
ADWEA will wherever possible and if required by the Contractor shall arrange metered
supplies of water from the existing line, but the contractor will have to pay for the
metered water..
4.5 The new network shall be flushed with sufficient velocity (not less than 1.0m/sec.) to
remove sand, debris etc. remaining in the main line.
4.6 Make sure that the entire networks are cleaned by monitoring the flushing points.
4.7 By means of pressurized pump, add the chlorine solution – during filling the network
through the chlorine feeding points with dose 20mg/L or as directed by ADWEA
Engineer and left charged with this solution for 24 hours.
Note: During these 24 hours, all valves must be operated to ensure their proper
disinfections.
4.8 At the end of the 24 hours period – at operating pressure the chlorine concentration
shall be checked.
If there is less than 1.0mg/L of free available Chlorine dose in the line more chlorine
solution shall be added and left for a further 24 hours period and check chlorine
concentration again.
This procedure will be accepted until the free available chlorine taken after 24 hours
exceeds 1.0mg/L for all samples taken from the area of test pipeline.
4.9 The new pipelines shall be flushed out by potable water from the existing mains under
velocity 1.0m/sec (min), considering that the flushing water quantity equals (3) times
the volume of pipeline to be flushed and has 0.4mg/Lit (min) free available chlorine.
4.10 After flushing, water in new pipeline shall stand for a further 24 hours, and then
samples shall be collected from approved location for chemical and bacteriological
testing by ADDC Laboratory representative under the supervision of Engineer / ADDC
representative.
4.11 The new pipeline shall be considered acceptable in the following:
a. Total Chlorine content is a minimum 0.2mg./Lit.
b. PH is within acceptable limits of ADWEA laboratory.
c. Bacterial count is within approved limits of ADWEA Laboratory

d. Faecal coli forms are un-detectable in a 100ml sample.
4.12 The value of PH in water in newly constructed cement mortar lined pipe may be higher
than acceptable limits, so Contractor should continue more flushing to reduce PH to
acceptable value.
4.13 If tests in steps (11), (12) are failed, Contractor shall repeat the disinfection
procedure, tests & flushing at his cost until the accepted requirement are met.
Note: Ten days before the contractor intends to undertake Disinfection / flushing
