1. Document Purpose
The purpose of this document is to describe the requirements for new and revised CAD
drawings produced in or for the PTA.
This procedure covers the following topics.
Topic
Drawing Production
Drafting Standards
Drawing Sheets
Plotting
This procedure is applicable to all divisions within the PTA and external Consultants, who
produce, revise or reference Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) drawings. This includes:
Architectural Drawings
Engineering Services Drawings
Overhead Wiring Systems
Railway Communications
Structural Drawings
Track Layout Drawings
Traction Power
Signalling Drawings
Rollingstock Drawings
Control System Drawings
1.1 Excluded from Document Scope
This procedure applies only to documents of type ‘Drawing’.
This procedure does not apply to ‘Sketches’.
5. Drawing Title
Provision has been made for the drawing title to be up to three lines in length. Refer to
Page 29 Drawing Sheet 00-G-10-0001 for the A1 PTA drawing sheet.
7. Drawing Sheets
All AutoCAD drawings shall be produced using the drawing template as provided.
There should only be one drawing sheet for each drawing number allocated.
All PTA title block information has been attributed in the templates.
PTA 2019-FULL.ctb PTA standard pen allocations and properties at full scale.
PTA 2019-HALF.ctb PTA standard pen allocations and properties at half scale.
ISOCPEUR AutoCAD true type font ISOCPEUR for general use and for
headings and titles.
Italic AutoCAD text style italic representing the drawing has been
signed.
8. Drafting Standards
8.1 Drawing
The CAD Operator shall not overcrowd drawings. Keeping all views, symbols,
dimensions, lines and notes spaced to provide drawing clarity. Locate notes clear of
drawing details. If necessary, show areas of fine detail suitably enlarged on additional
drawing sheets.
The CAD Operator shall use technical symbols, PTA standard drawing sheet sizes, title
blocks and layouts that will be provided upon request.
8.2 Measurement
Set' MEASUREMENT’ to ‘1’ (metric units). Note that if an AutoCAD drawing ‘crashes’ the
drawing recovery process will automatically change MEASUREMENT back to ‘0’ – this
will therefore need to be reset to ‘1’.
8.3 Purging
Prior to issue of drawing files purge all unused layers, blocks, line types, text styles, etc
from the drawings. DO NOT purge unused dimension styles.
8.4 Drawing Units
All drawings shall be drawn in metres (ie site plans and civil layout plans) with the
exception of detailed architectural and mechanical drawings which can be drawn in
millimetres (ie floor plans, elevations, and details).
PTA maintains overall CAD databases for the various rail lines. These databases have
historically been developed around trackworks and services and are maintained to
PCG 94 coordinates with scale units of metres rather than millimetres.
Therefore a copy of the general arrangement plans (including rail tracks, buildings,
structures and external services) will be required to be supplied drawn at 1:1 in metres,
orientated at PCG 94 ‘world’ coordinates to facilitate their direct insertion into the
overall CAD database.
Generally PTA track and other survey information will be supplied in metres and to PCG
94 coordinates.
8.5 Layer “xrefs”
Layer “xrefs” should be reserved solely for the loading or attaching of all referenced files
contained in the drawing.
XR01C_BASEPLAN_YYYYMMDD
The naming convention for xrefs is broken down in accordance with the PTA drawing
matrix as follows: the initials “XR”, Area, Discipline, a simple description and date as set
out in AS ISO 8601.
Before submitting to the PTA the reference name must be the same as the saved path.
Xrefs with file types that aren’t dwg (eg .pdf, .png, .bmp, .tif) should be bound or not
used within the body of a drawing.
8.8 ETransmits
To ensure all associated xrefs are bundled with the drawing, always use the Etransmit
command when distributing drawing files.
Xrefs must be detached if not used in the submitted drawing.
8.9 Drawing Origin
Track and site drawings will use real world Perth Coastal Grid (PCG94) coordinates.
Base MODEL information is always to be drawn at 1:1 scale (ref previous note under 8.4
Drawing Units). ‘PLAN’ MODEL information is to be drawn up in PCG ’94 co-ordinates
with north orientated to the top of the page and the MODEL saved with UCS – “World”.
If ‘non-world’ UCS’s are generated, always save these within the drawing and
allocated them a short but meaningful name.
Layout
Use ‘Paper Space/Layout’ for setting up title sheets. A ‘non-world’ UCS can be set up in
the ‘Paper Space’ (Layout) viewport, which are then set up to display the appropriate
scale and rotation required (ie to align the building horizontally in the printed drawing
sheet or for convenience of text alignment etc).
If ‘non-world’ UCS’s are generated, always save these within the drawing and
allocated them a short but meaningful name.
‘Paper Space/Layout’ viewports should be created on a Layer ‘Viewport’.
Always lock viewports to prevent inadvertent scaling.
PSLTSCALE should always be set to ‘1’.
LTSCALE set to between ‘0.7’ and ‘1.0’ assuming that the original drawing is
intended to be plotted at a scale 1:1 ie a typical ‘Paper Space/Layout’
drawing.
Where MODELSPACE drawings are to be plotted out at plot scales other than
1:1 then the ‘Ltscale’ will need to be adjusted accordingly.
8.16 Text
Refer to 7.3.2 for standard text styles. Text shall be upper case only, uncondensed,
upright and with a minimum height of 2.0mm using a 0.18mm pen. This ensures that the
A3 reduction retains the legibility.
Text styles shall be defined with a zero text height, the respective height being
nominated during text insertion.
Text in Paper Space
Text is generally to be placed on the ‘Paper Space/Layout’ view rather than on the
Model. This is particularly important on plans where the model is likely to be inserted
into the overall line plan.
MTEXT
T25 7 2.50 mm
T35 50 3.50 mm
T40 4 4.00 mm
9. Plotting
The following ‘Typical’ example drawings are to be used as a general guide and are
provided for communications drawings set out. All drawings should use the PTA
Drawing Template as stated in paragraph 7.1. They have been compiled in
conjunction with criteria outlined in the document “Guidelines for Communications
Documentation No. 8003-700-001.”
Typical Example Drawings
Typical Drawing Name Drawing
Number
Typical drawings 00-T-16-0001 & 00-T-16-0014 are to be used as templates with only text
and drawing sheet being altered to suit.
Site Book Drawing Sheet Sizes may be A3 or A1 in size
however ALL Site Book Sheets MUST BE PRINTED AT A3 SIZE.
Site Book Number allocations for Proposed and Future Stations, Track Sectioning Cabins,
Feeder Stations and Relay Rooms are to be allocated as outlined in the document
“Guidelines for Communications Documentation No. 8003-700-001 (Table 4-2)”
Stand alone Radio Sites or any other additional future Communications Sites that
require a Site Book Number can be obtained by contacting the Resource Centre for
New Site Book number allocation if and when required.
The main aim of each Site Book is to identify each type of “Communications System”
that is pertinent to that particular Site and provide a detailed overview for each system.
PTA requires all external parties to adhere to the nominated sequencing for
“Communications Systems” outlined in drawing 00-T-16-0001 AT ALL TIMES when
compiling a Site Book and/or other related drawings.
Typical Index Sheets (Refer drawing 00-T-16-0001) show how each Site Book is to be set
out and collated.
All drawing content provided to PTA for communications are to be compiled as per the
following.
Model Space/Paper Space
All drawings, including xrefs, shall be drawn in model space and presented in paper
space in accordance with this procedure.
Saving of all Communications Drawings
The following is the required format for saving of Drawings
All layers are turned on
All layers are thawed
All layers are unlocked
Current Layer is set to 0
Drawing is zoomed Extents
All line work is set to By Layer
All colours are set to By Layer
Drawing is Purged of all unwanted layering etc.
All unused xrefs to be detached from drawing.
Appendix C – Electrical
All electrical works shall be prepared in accordance with this procedure apart from
the following electrical specific items.
Drawing Management
All drawings should use the PTA Drawing Template as stated in paragraph 7.1. The
following drawings indicate symbology to be used:
00-E-10-0001
00-E-10-0002
00-E-10-0003
00-E-10-0004
00-E-10-0005
Drawing Standards
Layering Protocol
Layering for these drawings shall have a prefix of “E” for Electrical followed by a
category name as follows, then a relevant description.
Category Description
Acc Accessories
CB Circuit/Wiring Protection
Lum Luminaires
NT Notes
SS Security
Swit Switchboards
Tele Telephone
Appendix D – Signalling
All signalling works shall be prepared in accordance with this procedure apart from
the following signalling specific items.
Existing drawing amendments are alphabetical starting at A for the first amendment
and continuing in sequence to Z, then AA to ZA followed by AB to ZB etc.
New drawing amendments are alphabetical starting at A for original issue,
thereafter following the same practice as for existing drawings.
If space is no longer available for the addition of a further required amendment
block in the appropriate area of a drawing. The existing amendment blocks are to
be moved onto a Layer named “AMEND_”(Colour “Blue”) and turned off. The
current amendment block shall be placed onto the same Layer as the drawing
border and title block.
The revision block (LAYER “REV” on drawings) shall be used by Designers to track
progressive design revisions and approval status until the drawing is commissioned
and the “as built” drawing is returned to the PTA.
For example if a drawing at revision B is to be altered to revision C, the revision block
will have the design status shown as C-1 initial design with the designer’s initials and
the checker’s initials. If after the initial review a defect is found a fresh version is
issued as design revision C-2 internal review alterations with the designer and
checker’s initials. Eventually the design is approved as design revision eg: C-5 Issued
for Construction with designer, checker and approver’s initials. Before returning the
As Built file to the PTA as a completed file the LAYER SUBCONTRACTOR is to be turned
off and red work replaced by black on layer 0 and blue work to be deleted.

Appendix D – Signalling
For all general text use text style SIMPLEX, AutoCAD font file SIMPLEX.SHX and for
headings, titles and other areas where bold lettering is required use text style ARIAL,
AutoCAD font file ARIAL.SHX.
AutoCAD Drawing Dimensioning
Dimensioning text shall be 2.0mm high using a 0.25mm pen.
Dimensioning lines shall be in a 0.25mm pen.
Arrowheads used in dimensioning shall be 3mm long.
Colour Coding of Drawings – For Signalling & Control Systems
The following colours shall be used to distinguish the changes to the drawing.
RED (Colour 20) - Equipment and/or wiring to be added. (On “NEW” Layer)
CYAN (Colour 131) - Equipment and/or wiring to be removed. (On “OLD”
Layer)
If additional amendments are required for stage works on a drawing already
coloured red and/or blue, the following colours are to be used.
ORANGE (Colour 30) - Equipment and/or wiring to be added.
PURPLE (Colour 200) - Equipment and/or wiring to be removed.
GREEN (colour 90) shall be used to show existing equipment and/or wiring, but
has not been shown previously on the drawing (past).
If first stage and second stage work will be commissioned at different times or by
different parties, then two amendments shall be shown on the drawing so that all
parties are aware of the impact of their works on the other party.
Stage 1 will be shown red “NEW” and cyan “OLD”.
Stage 2 will be shown orange (30) “NEW” and purple (200) “OLD”.
Each stage will have its own revision letter and amendment block, drawings with two
stages shown simultaneously will therefore have two amendment blocks on the
bottom, one in red (stage 1) and one in orange (stage 2).
Stages will be ‘cadded’ on separate layers on the drawing.
Installation and Commissioning/test copies shall only have one stage on them.
Supervisor and office copies can show both stages on the one set (for information).
This will enable the wireman and test engineer to work on red and blue only, thus
limiting confusion.
Once stage 1 is complete, red and blues shall be made As Built (turning red to black
and deleting blue). Stage 2 then becomes red and blue. If stage 2 is to be
completed much later, then other jobs can be done in between, the stage 2 layer is
kept, but turned off. Then the stage 2 design may need to be altered to take into
account new As Built information when it is time to proceed with the second stage.
Stage 2 is now a job in its own right, with its own amendment block. If the two stages
are close together then consideration should be given to showing all changes as
Appendix D – Signalling
one stage in red and blue, rather than as two stages. Only one amendment block
would be necessary. This should be determined based on the amount of time
between the stages of work and whether an As Built drawing is likely to be needed
in that time.
Re-Used Equipment – For Signalling & Control Systems– Equipment being re-used
should not have a red border around the equipment. It should be Magenta and put
onto the ‘old’ layer. Likewise the equipment to be moved should be shown black
inside the magenta box and also on the ‘old’ layer. The final position of the moved
equipment should have the magenta box and wording on the old layer moved
equipment in black on ‘0’ layer in its final position.
Appendix E – Rollingstock
All Rollingstock drawings shall be prepared in accordance with this procedure apart
from the following specific items.
All final drawing are to be completed in the Autocad “dwg” file format and in the
“Model Space” environment, drawn at full size with the drawing sheets scaled up or
down to a standard scale (refer to AS 1100 part 102) required to fit around the
arrangement or components.
Xrefs are not to be used for any objects i.e. drawing sheets.
The A3 sheet is used for the majority of assemblies and details with A4 size being used
for single small components. Line group 0.35 specified in AS1100.101 for Rollingstock
drawings. Associate dimensions shall be used for all drawings, scaled to match the
drawing sheet scale and only exploded or edited when absolutely necessary. They
are to be created on the layer “Dimension”.
