6 USED VALUES
OCS CHARACTERISTICS
The following values are considered for the calculation of tension length of OCS conductors,
in consistency with Particular Specifications, addendums to bidding documents and contact,
catenary/feeder messenger wire characteristics as stated in Preliminary Design Report for
OCS:
▪ Contact wire for Depot Entry/Exit Lines (FMS):
o Cu-Sn (High conductivity) 170mm² (1.514kg/m);
o External diameter: 15.49mm;
o Contact wire tension of 14.7kN (1500kgf);
▪ Catenary wire for Depot Entry/Exit Lines (FMS):
o Cu-Sn (High conductivity) 356mm² stranded conductors (3.231kg/m);
o External diameter: 24.5mm;
o Catenary/Feeder messenger wire tension of 19.6kN (2000kgf) in each conductor;
▪ Contact wire for depot (SCS):
o Cu-Sn (High conductivity) 110mm² (0.988kg/m);
o External diameter: 12.34mm;
o Contact wire tension of 9.81kN (1000kgf);
▪ Catenary wire for depot (SCS):
o Cu-Sn (High conductivity) 90mm² stranded conductors (0.810kg/m);
o External diameter: 12.30mm;
o Catenary/Feeder messenger wire tension of 9.81kN (1000kgf) in each conductor;
▪ OPC wire:
o Type of OPC wire: ACSR conductor, consisting of 7 steel wires each of 2.5mm diameter
and 12 aluminum wires also of 2.5mm diameter each, with a nominal cross section of
93.3mm²;
o External diameter: 12.5mm;
o OPC tension of 250kgf for depot @ 35°C and 300kgf for main line @ 35°C

WEIGHTS
▪ FMS OCS weight is: 1.05 x (1.514kg/m + 3.231kg/m) = 4.982kg/m (including 5% for
droppers)
▪ SCS OCS weight is: 1.05 x (0.988kg/m + 0.810kg/m) = 1.888kg/m (including 5% for
droppers)
▪ Cantilever elements unit weights (according to STK handbook):
o Cantilever assembly: Actual weight as per size of members
o OPC weight is: 0.437kg/m
o Weight of man: 60kg

WIND LOAD
6.3.1 DYNAMIC WIND PRESSURE
Dynamic wind pressure, qk= 2,040Pa as per contract CP-07, Volume 3-2 of 5, Part 2, Clause
2.6, qk = 2,040N/m2 (208 kgf/m2).
6.3.2 WIND LOAD ON CABLES
Wind load on unit length of wire, wc = qk*Gc*Cc*diameter of wire (EN 50119 clause 6.2.4.3).
The following factors are used for calculation in reference to EN 50119:
▪ Structural response factor, Gc is 0.75;
▪ Drag factor, Cc is 1.

Document No. Rev. Date Page

DESIGN REPORT OF DROP ARMS, SUPER MAST AND ANCHOR BASE PLATE DMRT LINE 6/CP-07

Then, wc = 0.75*qk*diameter of wire, in case of wind perpendicular to the line.

6.3.3 WIND LOAD ON STRUCTURE
Wind load on structure, wstr = qk*Gstr*Cstr*Astr (EN 50119 clause 6.2.4.7).
The following factors are used for calculation in reference to EN 50119:
▪ Structural response factor, Gstr is 1;
▪ Drag factor, Cstr is:
o 0.7 for tubular steel and concrete structures with circular cross section (including
cantilever tubes);
o 1.4 for tubular steel and concrete structures with square or rectangular cross section.
This load is used for wind on brackets;
o 0.85 for dodecagonal steel cross section.
6.3.4 WIND LOAD ON INSULATORS
Wind load on insulators, wins = qk*Gins*Cins*Ains (EN 50119 clause 6.2.4.4).
The following factors are used for calculation in reference to EN 50119:
▪ Structural response factor, Gins is 1.05;
▪ Drag factor, Cins is 1.2.
Then, wins = 1.26*qk*area of the insulator projected horizontally on a vertical plane
perpendicular to the axis of wind action, in case of wind parallel to the line.

9 CHANGES FROM PREVIOUS VERSION

Regarding the Super Masts in Depot, as the implantation vary from 2.2m to 3.5m, our
proposal was to reduce the nominal tension in OPC from 500kgf to 250kgf to reduce the actual
utilisation ratio (allowable stress to working stress). The revised calculations have been
performed after reducing the nominal tension in OPC from 500kgf to 250kgf and
corresponding radial loads in depot. The actual utilisation ratio has been reduced from 0.924
to 0.647.

Regarding sag for maximum span of 40m in depot & at ambient temperature i.e. 45°C and
other higher temperature ranges is give below:

1. Sag at 45°C = 427mm

2. Sag at 50°C = 467mm
3. Sag at 55°C = 506mm
4. Sag at 60°C = 543mm
5. Sag at 65°C = 579mm
6. Sag at 70°C = 613mm

Now, as the height of OPC at support is 7900mm minimum and considering a maximum sag
of 613mm, the height of OPC at mid-span will be 7287mm. As the maximum height of
messenger wire is 5810mm at support and at mid span it will be less than 5810mm. Hence
the clearance between OPC and messenger wire under worst condition will always be more
than 1477mm, which is much safer than the actual requirement.

As the heights of OPC are high and spans on main line also vary while transitions from tangent
to curves resulting in high radial loads. Also, at OPC termination locations and subsequent
locations the variation of OPC height is high. SYSTRA recommends reducing the OPC tension
on mainline also from 500kgf to 300kgf. As a reference, 300kgf is the nominal tension followed
in International Projects like UK Network Rail where the maximum span is 63m and 320kgf is
the nominal tension followed in latest Indian Metro Projects like Nagpur and Pune Metro etc.,
where the maximum span is 54m.

After reducing the tension in OPC from 500kgf to 300kgf and corresponding radial loads in
mainline. The actual utilisation ratio has been reduced from 0.756 to 0.637.

Regarding sag for maximum span of 36m in mainline & at ambient temperature i.e. 45°C and
other higher temperature ranges is give below:

1. Sag at 45°C = 306mm

2. Sag at 50°C = 344mm
3. Sag at 55°C = 382mm
4. Sag at 60°C = 419mm
5. Sag at 65°C = 455mm
6. Sag at 70°C = 489mm

Now, as the height of OPC at support is 7350mm minimum (except at OPC anchors and
stations) and considering a maximum sag of 489mm, the height of OPC at mid-span will be
6861mm. As the maximum height of messenger wire is 5800mm at support and at mid span
it will be less than 5800mm. Hence the clearance between OPC and messenger wire under
worst condition will always be more than 1061mm, which is much safer than the actual
requirement.

DESIGN REPORT OF DROP ARMS, SUPER MAST AND ANCHOR BASE PLATE DMRT LINE 6 / CP-07

At OPC anchor locations the OPC height is 6700mm minimum and messenger wire height is
5800mm. Hence, the clearance between OPC and messenger wire will always be more than
900mm, which is much safer than the actual requirement.

In view, of above CP07 requested Engineer to review the proposal and accord necessary
approval for 250kgf for depot and 300kgf tension in mainline as per the international practice.
