Vertical Interruption Device

(VID) The Vertical Interruption Device was developed to prevent surface detonations
during TCP and CT perforating operations. The V.I.D. stops the explosive train
from initiating a perforating gun while in the lubricator or while running into
the wellbore. The V.I.D. contains an energy absorber/shockwave deflector that
prevents the initiation of a perforating gun upon accidental activation of the
firing head. When the device is in the horizontal position the absorber/deflector
falls into the internal cavity of the housing and allows the transfer to the
perforating gun to occur.

1. In the vertical position, the absorber/deflector covers the
through hole in the VID safety device between the percussion
initiator and the perforating gun. This prohibits the
detonation wave from the percussion initiator from striking
the bi-directional booster connected to the detonating cord
in the perforating gun…thus halting the detonation of the
perforating gun.

2. As the perforating assembly transitions to the horizontal

position in the wellbore, the absorber/deflector falls into
the internal cavity of the housing of the VID safety device.
This creates a clear path between the percussion initiator
and the perforating gun.

3. Pressure activation of the TCP firing head drives the

firing pin into the percussion initiator.

4. Upon detonation of the percussion initiator, the

shockwave travels through the VID safety device,
striking the bi-directional booster connected to the
detonating cord in the perforating gun immediately
detonating the perforating gun.
