Technical information should always be available to the foremen and mechanics, because their
careful and constant adherence to the instructions is essential to ensure vehicle road-worthiness and
safety. In addition, the normal basic safety precautions for working on motor vehicles must, as a
matter of course, be observed.

1.2 Safety precautions when working on vehicles with start/stop system

Risk of injury due to unexpected engine start
If the vehicle's start/stop system is activated, the engine could
start unexpectedly. A message in the dash panel insert indicates
whether the start/stop system is activated.
– To deactivate start/stop system: switch off ignition.

Risk of injury caused by unsecured test and measuring instru‐

When the front passenger airbag is triggered in an accident, in‐
sufficiently secured test and measuring instruments become dan‐
gerous projectiles.
– Secure test and measuring instruments on the rear seat.

– Have a second person operate the test and measuring equip‐
ment on the rear seat.

Caddy 2004 ➤ , Caddy 2011 ➤
Auxiliary heater - Edition 03.2018

Risk of damage when starting the engine

If components of the fuel system or coolant circuit of the auxiliary/
supplementary heater are removed or opened, there is a possi‐
bility of causing damage to the auxiliary/supplementary heater.
– Never attempt to start the engine when components are re‐
moved or opened.

Malfunction caused by air in the fuel supply system

Upon repair work on the fuel tank or the fuel delivery unit, air will
be drawn in by the metering pump and conveyed to the auxiliary/
supplementary heater. Air in the fuel supply system may cause
malfunction of the auxiliary/supplementary heater.
– Fill fuel take-off pipe with fuel.

Risk of accidents and risk of injury due to activated timer of aux‐

iliary/supplementary heater
If the vehicle’s timer for the auxiliary/supplementary heater is ac‐
tive, the heater may switch on unexpectedly. This poses a risk of
poisoning from exhaust gases, a risk of burns caused by hot aux‐
iliary/supplementary heater components as well as a risk of fire
and explosions caused by high temperatures.

4.2 Removing and installing metering pump

- V54-

Note

♦ The metering pump - V54- is available in 3 different versions:

♦ DP40 for Thermo Top V - petrol version
♦ DP41 for Thermo Top V - diesel version
♦ DP42 for Thermo Top fleece

The metering pump DP40 is installed in petrol versions of the

auxiliary heater Thermo Top V. It is also suitable for diesel ver‐
sions of the auxiliary heater Thermo Top V without fuel shut-off
valve - N109- .
The metering pump DP41 is installed in diesel versions of the
auxiliary heater Thermo Top V with fuel shut-off valve - N109- .
The metering pumps DP40 and DP41 are nearly identical. Exter‐
nally, the metering pumps are distinguished by the different col‐
ours of the plastic caps of their fuel reservoirs: black in the case
of metering pump DP40, and grey in the case of metering pump
DP41.

4. Fuel supply system 41

Caddy 2004 ➤ , Caddy 2011 ➤

different from the metering pumps DP40 and DP41.

full load within 56 seconds. After a stabilisation phase (steady
speed) of 15 seconds, the combustion air blower - V6- is again
brought up to nearly full load in over a period of 50 seconds.
After reaching full-load fuel delivery, the glow plug with flame
monitor - Q8- is switched off, and the combustion air blower - V6-
is brought up to full load. During the next 45 seconds as well as
during normal operation, the glow plug with flame monitoring - Q8-
assumes the task of flame monitoring and checks flame devel‐
opment. Then automatically regulated heating operation begins.
If no flame develops or there is a flame failure, then the fuel supply
is interrupted and a malfunction shut-down occurs with the com‐
bustion air blower - V6- continuing in run-on mode. If there is a
flame failure during normal operation, a new start is automatically
initiated.

5.2 Functional description of Thermo Top

fleece
The auxiliary heater can be started by means of the remote con‐
trol, the instant heating button - E537- or appropriate program‐
ming in the dash panel insert. The supplementary heater is
started automatically by the vehicle electronics system once all
the necessary preconditions have been met.
First, the function of the fresh air blower - V2- and the combined
glow plug with flame monitoring - Q8- are tested and then the glow

phase.
The subsequent starting process depends on the coolant tem‐
perature, among other things, and can therefore vary in the
amount of time it takes. The fuel is supplied, the glow plug with
flame monitoring - Q8- is switched off in stages and the flame
monitor is activated.
After completion of the starting phase, the unit operates under full
load, and further load control (sparking mode, full load, partial
load and controlled waiting period) takes place on the basis of the
following coolant temperature thresholds.

Once the coolant temperature has reached 82°C, the control unit
switches to energy-saving part load operation. If the coolant tem‐
perature continues to rise above 88°C, the control unit switches
to the regulated waiting period. If the coolant temperature does
not drop below 70°C within 900 seconds during the controlled
waiting period, the heater unit will start with the normal start pro‐
cedure in full-load mode when the coolant temperature does drop
below 65°C.

5.6 Switching off auxiliary/supplementary

heater
When switched off manually or after a maximum operating time
of 60 minutes, or when the coolant reaches a temperature of 84°
C, combustion is ended and the run-on mode begins. The circu‐
lation pump - V55- and the combustion air blower - V6- , however,
continue to run in order to cool down the auxiliary heater (run-on
mode) and are switched off automatically.

Note

The run-on period of the circulation pump - V55- and the com‐
bustion air blower - V6- depends on the operating mode in which
the auxiliary heater was switched off.

The run-on period is 175 seconds when heater is switched off

during full-load operation and 110 seconds for part-load opera‐
tion.
Depending on the control unit software version, slight deviations
in the specified run-on values are possible. n AG. Volkswagen AG do
