Expressing/Converting Decimal to Fraction and Percent form

Learning Competencies:
a. The learner expresses decimal to fraction and percent form
Objectives:
To be able to perform fundamental operations on decimal to fraction and percent forms.

Introduction:
This Learning Activity Sheet introduces the learner to the basic operation on conversion of
decimal to fraction and percent forms. This is made in a simple possible way for the learner to be
understood easily. Activity/exercises as self- assessment at the end part of the LAS.

Review:
1. What is fraction?
2. What is proper fraction, improper fraction, and mixed fraction?
3. How do you express/ convert fraction to decimal, and percent?

Discussion:

Decimal is a number written with a decimal point and a remainder that represents portions of ten.

How do we convert decimal to fraction?

Convert decimals to fractions
1. Step 1. Write down decimal divided by 1.
decimal
Like this:
1
2. Step 2. Multiply both top and bottom by 10 for every number after the decimal point. (for
example, if there are two numbers after the decimal point, then use 100, if there are three
then use 1000, etc.)
3. Step3. Simplify (or reduce) the fraction.
Example:
Convert 0.75 to fraction
Step 1: write down 0.75 divided by 1.
0.75
1
Step 2: Multiply both top and bottom by 100
(because there are 2 digits after the decimal point so that is 10 x 10= 100):
x100

0.75 75
=
1 100
(do you see how it turns the top number into a whole number)
x100
Step 3: simplify the fraction (this took me two steps):
÷5 ÷5

75 15 3
= = answer
100 20 4
÷5 ÷5

When there is a whole number part, put the whole number aside and bring it back at the end:
Example:
Convert 2.35 to a fraction
Put aside the 2 and work on 0.35
Step 1: write down:
0.35
1
Step 2: multiply both top and bottom by 100 (2 digits after the decimal point so that 10x10=
35
100):
100
Step 3: simplify the fraction:
÷5

35 7
=
100 20

÷5

Bring back the 2 (to make a mixed fraction):

7
Answer = 2
20

How to convert decimal to percent form? Multiply by 100 to convert a number from decimal to
percent then add sign %.
1. Converting from a decimal to a percentage is done by multiplying the decimal value by 100
and adding %.
2. Example:
0.10 becomes 0.10 x 100 = 10%. answer
3. Example:
0.675 becomes o.675 x 100 = 67.5%. answer
