NUMERACY
1. Lesson 1

2. Topic: Computation

3. Sub-topic/s:

 Operating with Percentages

 Understanding percentages
 Find percentage as a part of a whole
 Find a part of a whole as a percentage

4. Rationale:
This lesson will provide you with the basic understanding of operating with percentages. It is
important that you work with percentages because it used in many different areas such as
discounts in shops, product margins, cost of living data, bank interest rates and rates of inflation.
Furthermore, as a teacher it is my service to educate you as a student on operating with
percentages because these are parts of mathematics that you will use in your everyday lives and
need to be familiar with.
5. Objectives: After reading through handouts based on operating with percentages, you will be
able to:
 Find percentage as a part of a whole
 Find a part of a whole as a percentage
 Identify and read percentages.
 appreciate the use of percentages in everyday life

6. Activities:
 Read the handout on operating with percentages.
 Highlight or underline with a pen, important information in the handout.
 Complete the practice exercise on the handout itself and submit all graded assessments
only.

7. Resources: You will need a pencil, a pen, a calculator.

8. Glossary of important terms:

Percentage: a hundredth part of something.
Numerator: the top part of a fraction. The number of parts of something.
Denominator: the lower part of a fraction. The total number of parts that make up the whole.

9. Information Sheet:
We encounter percentages often and they can be very useful in many aspects of our lives. For
example, we see discounts offered in shops everywhere – as smart shoppers, we definitely need
to know how to do percentage calculations if we want the best deal. The word ‘percentage’
comes from the Latin per centum, meaning ‘per hundred’. A percentage is another way of
writing a fraction with a denominator of 100. The symbol for percentage is %. For example:
8 25 99
8% = 25% = 99% =
100 100 100

A percentage is a part of a whole, expressed in hundredths (“per cent” literally means, “by 100”
23
or “one hundredth part”). So 23% of a quantity is 23 hundredth parts of it, or .
100

A percentage is a fraction whose denominator (bottom) is 100. So if we say 50%, we mean

50 1 1
= (after cancelling). So 50% means . If want to find 10% of something, 'of' ' just means
100 2 2
'times'.
Below is a square that has been divided into 100 smaller squares. It can be used to model
percentages. If we colour in three of them, you can say that ‘three out of a hundred’ or ‘3 per
cent’ are coloured in.

10. Example/s with answers.

Example 1:
If we colour in 50 of them, we say that ‘50 out of a hundred’ or ‘50 per cent’ are coloured in. In
50 1
this case, the fraction coloured in is = , so half of the smaller squares are coloured in.
100 2

Example 2:
Find 25% of 10 (remember 'of' means 'times').
25
25 %=
100

25 10
×
100 1

Example 3:
Calculate 25% of 80
25
25 %=
100

25 80 1 80 80
And × = × = =20
100 1 4 1 4

So 25% of 80 is 20.

Example 4:
15% of 200 apples are bad. How many apples are bad?
