Ultrasonic Examination of Pipe and Tubing

1 Scope

This document contains additional requirements and exceptions to G8S-5070-00

for ultrasonic examination of metal pipe and tubing with:

• 0.2 inch (5 mm) or larger nominal outside diameter.

• 0.02 inch (0.5 mm) or thicker nominal wall thickness.

• An outside diameter-to-inside diameter ratio of less than 2.0:1.

2 Requirements

2.1 Technique

Use the shear wave (angle beam) technique. Scanning may be performed
by either a manual or an automatic technique using either the contact
or the immersion method.

2.2 Calibration

Perform a DAC calibration on a pipe or tubing calibration standard of

the same nominal outside diameter and wall thickness as the pipe or
tubing being examined and which contains longitudinal (axial) notches
on the inside and outside surfaces with the following maximum
dimensions:

• Notch depths: the larger of 0.004 inch (0.10 mm) or 5% of the

nominal wall thickness.
• Notch widths: 2 times notch depth.

• Notch lengths: 1 inch (25 mm).

Where possible, adjust sound beam incident angle (angle at which the
sound beam strikes the outside surface) such that the indication
amplitudes from the ID and OD notches are equalized.

2.3 Scanning Speed

Scanning speed may be increased above 6 inches (152 mm)/second

providing that gate and automatic alarm circuitry are utilized and that
the gate consistently triggers the alarm for both the ID and the OD
notch.

2.3 Examination

Examine pipe or tubing from two opposite (180° apart) circumferential

directions (i.e., the sound beam shall propagate circumferentially
around the pipe or tube wall).

Use the same pipe or tube rotation speed and indexing during
examination that was used for calibration.

2.4 Recordable Indications

The recordable indication requirements in G8S-5070-00 are not

applicable providing that gate and automatic alarm circuitry are
utilized.
