GRADUATE SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

Philosophy of Education and the New Constitution (EDUC 100)

FINAL EXAMINATION

Name: Ryan Christian Tagal Bustillo Score: _____________

Direction: Answer the following questions comprehensively.

1. How can Philosophy become a pillar of education? Cite examples. ( 10pts)

Answer: Education throughout life is based on the pillar of education: Learning to do,
learning to live together, learning to be, learning to know and learning to transform.
Example, in learning to live together, by developing an understanding of other people
and an appreciation of interdependence - carrying out joint projects and learning to
manage conflicts - in a spirit of respect for the values of pluralism, mutual understanding
and peace. Formal education systems tend to emphasize the acquisition of knowledge
to the detriment of other types of learning; but it is vital now to conceive education in a
more encompassing fashion. Such a vision should inform and guide future educational
reforms and policy, in relation both to contents and to methods.

2. How did medieval and renaissance education affect the modern

educational system? Cite examples. (10pts)
Answer: The modern educational system that we have today was being influenced and
designed from the structures and principles during medieval and renaissance period. In
addition, values and morals were integrated on our educational system as well as to the
teaching and learning process. The major change in education during the Renaissance
had to do with making education serve the purpose of the humanists.  This meant that
education was aimed much more towards secular purposes than it previously had
been.  It also meant that education was based more on science than simply on learning
what ancient authorities had said.
3. Discuss the influence of religion in the development of formal education.
(10pts)
Answer: Religion teaches us to posses the values of responsibility and encourages us
to help others. In addition, it influences a person’s character, guides our actions and
behavior, and maintain healthy well-being.

4. Why is Jesus Christ considered as the “Greatest Teacher”? What were his
ways of teaching and how do you radiate his ways to your own teaching?
( 10 points)
Answer: Throughout time the message and influence of Jesus has made huge
differences not only to the lives of people but also to complete countries. Wherever his
teachings have been embraced, the rights of individuals have been firmly established,
slavery abolished, places of education set up, and countless more improvements made
for the benefit of humans. He taught that the way to greatness in the church is through
service. In my teaching, I will disallow discrimination among my students and treat them
equally because each of us were born unique and act differently.

5. What is the importance of the teacher’s “Philosophical Position” in the

classroom? (10pts)
Answer: Teaching is a highly complex occupation, which needs to adapt to a great
deal of variety in context, subject matter, and learners. It does not lend itself to broad
generalizations. Nevertheless, it is possible to provide guidelines or principles based on
best practices, theory and research, that must then be adapted or modified to local
conditions. Every teacher starts from epistemological or theoretical position, even if its
not explicit, or even if the teacher is not fully aware of their beliefs. However, academic
knowledge is not the only kind of knowledge that is important today, and as teachers,
we must be aware of other forms of knowledge and their potential importance to our
students and make sue that we are providing the full range of contents and skills
needed for students in a digital age.
6. Expound the words of Jose Rizal “The school is the basis of society; the
school is the book in which is written the future of the nation! Show us the
school of the people and we shall show you what the people are” how does
this words relate to you as an educator? (10pts)
Answer: The school is where students are studying lesson to learn new things and
knowledge about our life and our society. This is also their way to make dreams and
become successful in the future and make our nation progressive. All students are the
hope of the nation because they are needed to excel in school, improve skills, be a
good citizen in the society, be a good model among youths, have fears in God and help
our nation to become better. For the sake of our society, they must give their best and
effort in achieving their dreams and this is the way of a good and peaceful future of our
nation.

in life, in faith, and in purity. This act is very important to the public-school teachers. It
protects the rights of the teachers like the tenure of office, academic freedom, Tax
reliefs, and other benefits. Also, it serves as their guide on their profession and their
rights, privileges and benefits were written on these.
