3.1.4 DRILL AHEAD 26” @ 1950 M (711 M BML) + RAT HOLE

The section will be drilled with the drill-ahead tool after jetting the 36” structural casing. The
formation is expected to be significantly under compacted and unconsolidated, consequently
stability problems may be encountered.

The section hole will be drilled riser-less using seawater with hi-vis sweeps for hole cleaning to
the programmed shoe setting depth. Section TD must be adjusted for the length of casing on
board and about 10 m of rat hole.
The section hole must be drilled at controlled penetration rate with lightweight and fast rotary
avoiding angle development. Well-bore inclination should not exceed 1.5 deg.
The section will be drilled with DHM and MWD/PWD tools (see BHA paragraph). APWD data
shall be used monitor (real time) the bottom hole annulus/drill string pressure.

Drilling parameters:
DEPTH INTERVAL CIRCULATING ROTARY WEIGHT ON BIT
RATE OF PENETRATION (m/hr)
(meters) RATE (l/min) REVOLUTION (rpm) (tons)
JET structural casing 3000-4000 DHM As required
2500-4500
Drill 26” hole DHM + 40 (TDS) As required Controlled ROP at max 20
(660 – 1200 gpm)

One reserve pit of kill mud (see “Mud Programme”) will be available in case a shallow gas or
water flow is experienced. In this case, displace hole with mud at required density.
Keeping pumps on is recommended for all upward pipe movements (i.e. making connection
and trips) in order to minimise swabbing effect.
Large bit nozzles should be used (4 x 20/32”), since a higher pump rate can be achieved during
dynamic killing operations.
At section TD sweep hole with Hi-Vis bentonite pill and displace it (200% of hole volume) with
1.32 s.g. Pad Mud.

The programme will be revised basing on hole data detecting:

In case of shallow water flow indication will be decide if resume drilling up to programmed
depth using mud weighted or stop drilling and anticipate csg run. The decision will depend from
the length of the section that will have to be drilled with mud weighted still to reach the
programmed setting depth.

Shallow gas/water consideration:

Shallow gas safety meeting must be held with all personnel on board prior to spud in. All involved personnel (drilling crews, control
room operators, supply vessel captain and supervisory personnel) should know their duty in case of an emergency.
If indications of a water or gas flow occur any time, it will be necessary to kill the flow and resume operation following the revised
programme.
In case of drilling through flowing layer up to programmed depth use mud weighted at 1.15 sg (or higher as hole conditions dictate).
If necessary, the pump rate will be slowed to reduce mud consumption. The ROP will be optimised for cuttings removal at that flow
rate.
If kill mud is insufficient to control flow(s), be prepared to pump barite pills and abandon the hole.
ROV should be kept in proximity of the hole while drilling, making connections, flow checks and trips, continuously monitoring for
possible gas returns. In addition, monitor down hole annulus pressure (PWD tool) and stand pipe pressure, as a distinct pressure
drop or pressure increase can be an indication of an unloading well.

o Pressure drop unload well

o Pressure increase pack off with no flow or Sand Production with annulus flow

 Take directional survey every stand. Frequency of surveys can be reduced in case of straight hole tendency.
 In case of annulus loading (high ECD), reduce ROP and pump Hi-Vis more frequently. If ECD remains high, stop drilling
and circulate hole clean
 In case of annulus unloading (low ECD), stop drilling and flow check well
 ROV monitor for gas
 At section TD sweep hole with 300 bbl Hi-Vis pill and displace hole volume (200% of hole volume) with 1.32 sg pad mud
 POOH 26” bit to 36” casing shoe (pumping out).

 Monitor the hole for flow until the bit is out of hole.
 Pay attention when the stabilizers enter the casing shoe.
 Minimize any possibility of swabbing.
 Run in hole 26” bit back to TD checking for drag and fill
 At bottom sweep hole with Hi-Vis pill and displace hole volume (200% of hole volume) with 1.32 sg pad mud or heavier if
needed.

tally and for a ~12-13 meters of rat hole.
According to the seismic interpretation, a normal pore pressure gradient is expected up to the
section TD. No targets are planned to this phase. The expected formation static temperature at
section TD is approximately 73°C.

This section consists mainly claystone. No faults has be seen in the seismic interpretation of
this section. Losses of circulation are not expected and have not been reported in the
correlation wells.

All possible cautions to prevent and control hole instability must be taken:
 Drill fastest as for possible to reduce ageing of hole walls.
 Use automatic vertical drilling tools to obtain the best quality of hole to help tripping.
 Use oil base mud.

The section will be drilled vertically, with Automatic Vertical Device including MWD/LWD tools
in real time and down hole memory mode. LWD data shall be used to validate lithologies
prognosis and monitor (real time) the bottom hole annulus/drill string pressure.

Drilling parameters:
DEPTH INTERVAL CIRCULATING RATE RPM WOB (tons) Expect. ROP
Down to section TD 4400 l/min (1160 gpm) DHM + 80 (TDS) As required ** AFARP

**The ROP will be optimized based on LOT, vibration analysis and LWD data transmission capacity

The real maximum mud weight for this section will be based on the actual leak off test result
and the ECD.
Attention shall be given to the indication of the abnormal pressure. The following is a list of indicators of abnormal pore pressure:
o Real time indicators; LWD data (Sonic, Resistivity and Formation Bulk Density trends); ROP; Drilling break; Torque; Tight hole

4. WELL ENGINEERING PLANNING

4.1 DRILLING RISKS AND MITIGATION MEASURES
Asase Ye Duru 1 is a challenging deep water well which requires all possible techniques and
tools to drill with maximum safety and reduce problems and non-productive times, based on the
experience of the reference wells.

4.1.1 MARINE CURRENT

During the operation in SANKOFA 1 hasn’t been reported any strong marine current that could
cause loss time for WOW.

4.1.2 SITE SURVEY

The seabed survey will not be performed, due to the utilisation of a Dynamic Positioned rig.
Anyway the ROV will perform a survey before spud in the well.

4.1.3 GAS HYDRATES

The pressure/temperature condition around the wellhead is suitable to cause hydrates
developing.
The picture shows different areas of
hydrate formation related to gas
composition. Considering to have
methane around the well, the
conditions at sea bed, 4°C (39°F) and
126 kg/cm2 (1798 psi), showed with a
blue line, are inside the hydrate region
(at the left of the curve).
The worst condition for the well during
standard operation will happen with
1.25 sg mud (153 kg/cm2 - 2180 psi) at
the well head zone, in static condition
(4°C - 39°F). Also in this case the
conditions (orange line) are inside the
hydrate region.
During a kick control could occur the
condition (red line) for hydrates
developing. The red line shows the
condition considering the max
expected pressure in 12 ¼” hole
section (2800psi) at the well head
zone in static condition (4°C - 39°F).

4.1.4 SHALLOW HAZARD

A shallow hazard study has been performed to investigate the potential shallow hazards in the
immediate vicinity of the proposed location and a summary of the results is reported in the
following paragraphs.
The shallow hazard study is based on seismic 3D data.

Shallow water flow and shallow gas

The study has identified a low risk area in proximity of the proposed location; in any case the
well has been positioned outside this area. The gas occurrence probability and related drilling
risk is negligible / low through all the riser-less section.

SECTION N° 4 – Drilling Programme

WEDE/PERF

The study has highlighted some anomalies and unconformities around the area. The vertical
projection of the well proposed location intersects a fault at a depth of about 1492 m msl (1516
m RKB) that do not represent a significant hazard for drilling operations.
Another fault affects the vertical projection of the location at a depth of about 2202 m msl (2226
m RKB) in the 17 ½” section; at the top of the fault, located along the R5 unconformity, a
possible fluid accumulation is foreseen (the gas occurrence probability is moderate).
There are no records of shallow gas or water flows during the drilling of the offset wells,

4.1.5 OTHER DRILLING RISKS

Formation losses
Review of offset data has indicated that no circulation losses have been encountered while
drilling SANKOFA 1A well. Anyway, lost circulation were experienced in the 17 1/2” hole
section in the WCTP – 2X well. Losses were encountered after drilling out the 20” shoe (1215m
MD) at 20bbl/hr and also at 1495m MD at a rate of 24bbls/hr. In both cases, LCM was spotted
and used to control the losses.

Hole stability
Hole stability issues were reported in South Dixcove1 well (gumbo shales have been
experienced in the top sections and a general shale instability has been reported in all the well
sections).
Both these wells utilised a water based drilling fluid that emphasised the reactive shale
instability problem.
Sankofa-1A was drilled with Low Toxicity Oil Based mud and no problems regarding hole
stability have been reported.

Hole cleaning
Hole cleaning issues were reported in 12-1/4” section of WCTP-2X well (several attempts of
string pack off due to bad hole cleaning).
It is important to keep the hole clean as much as possible pumping and circulating sweeps.
Torque and drag trends at surface will also be used to give indicative measurements of efficient
hole cleaning.

H2S and CO2

No reports of H2S have been recorded in offset wells. However, recent information has
indicated the presence of CO2 gas in low quantities of < 1% in formation fluids. This will not
present any drilling problems. The mud logging unit will be equipped to with H2S and CO2
detection and monitoring equipment.

Abnormal formation pressure

An increase of formation pressure are expected starting from 3100m. See pressure prediction
and well profile paragraph.

Conductor slumped (in SANKOFA 1)

In SANKOFA 1 well, the 36” conductor has been jetted too deep, leading to an approximate
stick-up of 1 m instead of the 3/3.5 m programmed. It took more than 2 hrs to have enough
visibility for the ROV to check the stick-up (in the meantime the conductor was left soaking in
the wrong position). Then the conductor was pulled back 1.5 m, thus creating a rat hole below
the repositioned conductor shoe. After drilling ahead the 17 ½” section, while cementing the 13
3/8” x 20” casing, the conductor slumped into the seabed falling 2.5 m. It has been necessary
to re-spud the well.

Low ROP
In some reference wells, a ROP drop issue occurred, due hard and abrasive thin layers
interbedded with soft shale causing a dramatic drop of the rate of penetration below 3000 m.
A bit optimization is strongly required for the bottom sections of the well.

4.3 PRESSURE PREDICTION

The pressure prediction study has been performed in Headquarter Geologist department using
the seismic data and logs/well test/drilling data from reference wells. Following paragraphs are
from the study.

4.3.1 PRESSURE TRENDS

The pore pressure profile shows the following trend:
 Normal gradient from seabed to approx 3100m TVDSS
 The pore pressure gradient increases gradually from 1.03 kg/cm 2/10m at 3100 m TVDSS to
1.11 kg/cm2/10m at 3600 m TVDSS.
 Into the well main target (Turonian sandstones) the pore pressure gradient increases to 1.18
kg/cm2/10m (considering a 200 m gas column effect to the value could reach 1.23
kg/cm2/10m ).
 Below well main target, the pore pressure gradient increases gradually from 1.12
kg/cm2/10m to 1.25 kg/cm2/10m at 4400 m TVDSS.

A chart of pressure trends is shown in paragraph “Well profile”.

4.3.2 APPLIED METHODS

The methods to estimate the pressure are based on:
 The overburden and pore pressure along the well is based on study and interpretation of a
volume of seismic stacking velocity around the well calibrated with reference well data.
 The pore pressure estimation into main target considering to apply on the estimated pore
pressure the gas/oil column effect (200 m of gas column considered)..
 The fracture gradient is calculated using a K parameter of 0.55 in the upper sections until
Campanian sandstones and 0.65 up to well TD (calibrated with LOT data of the reference

4.6 CASING DESIGN

4.6.1 CASING SETTING DEPTHS SELECTION
The designed casing program will allow to reach the well objective. Casing seat selection is
based upon the shallow flow hazards, estimated fracture gradient, pore pressure prediction and
objective horizons depths.
Due to the exploratory nature of this well and to the associated uncertainty about pore
pressure, fracture gradients data and target depths, the actual casing depths may vary and will
be dependent upon the geological and pressure conditions encountered.

4.6.2 CASING SELECTION

The following table shows the list of selected casing, related safety factor calculated and the
law used to verify the casing.

For more details about casing design and associated formulas see Annex at paragraph “Casing Design Details”.

4.6.3 EXEMPTIONS

The 9 5/8” production casing (contingency) is not verified in according to our collapse policy
(column full empty).
In these cases it’s used a exemption rule named "Above/below Packer” that it's enough
restrictive. This rule foresee the packer set 100 m above shoe, packer fluid level (last phase
mud weight) will drop until an equilibrium with pore pressure at perforations depth considered
equal to 0.3 kg/cm2 x 10m. Gas gradient pressure in front of perforations. Outside casing has
been considered mud weight gradient.

4.6.4 36” STRUCTURAL CASING @ 1310 M (MD RKB) – 71 M BML

The primary reason for setting this string is for structural integrity at the mud line. It will be set
about 71 m of penetration below mud line (LPH stick-up 2 m).

4.6.7 CONTINGENCY - 9 5/8” INTERMEDIATE CASING @ 4125 M (MD RKB)

In case of mineralized hydrocarbon discovery in the turonian sandstones, after logging a 9 5/8”
casing could be run and cemented in order to isolate the hydrocarbon filled levels and allow to
carry out the future well test operations.
In case of an unexpected increase of pore pressure gradient while drilling the 12 ¼” hole
section or the previous casing shoe strength is lower than expected value, it will be evaluated
the possibility to set the casing shoe before reaching the programmed depth. Consequently the
well TD will be reached in 8 ½” section.
The 9 5/8” casing will be cemented approx. 150m inside previous casing shoe.
The actual drilling program includes calculation about Casing Design for 9 5/8” casing set with

4.7 MUD PROGRAM

4.7.1 SUMMARY
The riser-less phase (36” jetting and 26” drilling-ahead) will be drilled using seawater with guar
gum sweeps before making every connections or as required by the operations.
The 17 ½” and 12 ¼” sections will be drilled using MI VERSACLEAN LTOBM.

4.7.2 36” JETTING

The primary objective of this interval is jet the 36” conductor to 1310 m without any problem; in
order to accomplish this, the hole must be maintained clean.
This section will be jetted with sea water and SW/Guar gum sweeps (50 bbl every half stand to
ensure proper hole cleaning).
Prior to commencement of the drilling operations, 270 m3 of Heavy Base Mud (1.74 sg) will be
prepared. If not used in this interval, it will be cut back with PHG to 1.32 sg for spotting at the
end of the 26” interval. At the end of the interval it is recommended to sweep the hole with an
additional 64 m3 (400 bbl) of PHG mud to ensure the hole is clean.

4.7.3 26” SECTION

The 26” interval will be drilled to 1950 m using seawater and guar gums sweeps (50 bbl every
15 m or more frequently if indicated by hole conditions).
It is recommended to pump a 50 m3 Hi Vis sweeps at interval TD and to displace the hole to
1.32 sg PAD mud before making a wiper trip to the 36” shoe. On returning to bottom, another
Hi-Vis sweep has to be circulated before re-displacing the hole to PAD mud.
The 1.74 sg Heavy Base Mud prepared before commencement of the well will be cut back with
a combination of KCl brine, SW and PHB to prepare the 1.32 sg PAD mud required for spotting
at casing point.

4.7.4 17 1/2” SECTION

The primary objective in this interval is to drill to TD and run the 13 3/8” casing without any
problem, in order to accomplish this we must maintain the hole clean and control the ECD.
The hole will be displaced to VERSACLEAN LTOBM while drilling the 20” casing shoe; the
choke, kill and booster lines should be displaced first and isolated.
Once the VERSACLEAN LTOBM is above the BOP, the booster line can be used to enhance
the riser displacement. Pipe rotation will enhance the displacement.

 Care should be taken to ensure that once the displacement starts it should not be
stopped until the LTOBM is on surface.
 Displacement procedures should be followed in order to minimize interface
volumes.
 Ensure the mud is conditioned for optimum hole cleaning
 Monitor and evaluate all the solid control equipment daily
 Maintain fluid properties as per program
 Mud in the riser is cold and viscous. Break circulation carefully to avoid excess
surge pressure
 Use VERSATROL to control HTHP fluid loss

4.8.1 SLURRY / SPACER RESUME AND DISPLACEMENT

Figures provided in the following tables, especially those related to volumes, and slurries
compositions are to be considered provisional since final figures will be dictated by actual
operation requirements. In particular, the final recipe, final volume, final chemical
composition and operation details will be provided after field and Lab tests results, prior
to commence the cementing jobs.
The designed pre-flushes/washes or the spacers should be compatible with both drilling mud
and cement slurry. Their characteristics should be easy to reach the turbulent flow regime and
with contact time at least 10 minutes in order to have very efficient mud displacement.
Whenever this annular flow regime is not achievable, a laminar flow displacement satisfying a
set of specific conditions should be used, this is called “effective laminar flow technique”. The
four criterions may help to achieve the effective laminar flow technique:
 is recommended to keep the selected spacer density with a minimum relative
difference of 20% between the mud and the cement slurry;
 it is also recommended to utilize the rheology contrast between the different fluids,
i.e. that of the displaced and the displacing fluids. This is accomplished by imposing a
friction pressure drop ratio between two fluids (spacer /mud, cement /spacer) of at least 1.2;
 try to establish the Minimum Pressure Gradient (MPG) to ensure the displaced
fluid (mud) and spacer are mobile on the narrow side of the annulus; That simply means the

wall shear stress for the displacing fluid on the narrow side of the annulus should be greater
that its yield stress;
 try to keep the velocity of the interface between two fluids on the wide side not
higher than on the narrow side.

Physical and chemical behaviour of cement slurry changes significantly at elevated
temperature and pressure. High temperature (>115°C–120°C) will result in decreased
compressive strength and increased permeability of the set cement. The tail slurry should be
mixed with fresh water and silica flour (35 % BWOC) due to expected higher temperature at the
bottom of hole section.

4.8.2 SLURRY CALCULATION AND CHECK STATIC PRESSURE PER CASING

The following table shows the volume of slurry and spacer calculated to verify the condition of
static pressure after slurry displacement or during waiting of cement (WOC) at different depth of
the section. Traditionally, the hydrostatic pressure during WOC is calculated by using mixing
water density (fresh water = 1 kg/l and sea water = 1.03 kg/l) as showed in the following tables
(Tab. 1 –Tab. 5).
As known, the hydrostatic pressure calculated with 1 or 1.03 kg/l in the annulus should be
balanced with pore pressure of formation. Otherwise, gas will be migrated into the annulus from
the formation at the under balance condition.
Gas migration mechanism study showed that the gas migration is a more complicated
phenomenon before cement setting. It is not so correct to assume mixing water density (1 or
1.03 kg/l) for hydrostatic pressure calculation during cement setting. Hence, it is necessary to
introduce a concept of cement slurry “gel strength”. The gelled fluid interacts with the casing
and the borehole wall and contributes to decay of hydrostatic pressure and develop the network
in order to block gas influx and move up the annulus. Hydrostatic pressure continuous to
decline as static gel strength develops sufficient to support the weight of the cement column.

The cement gel strength is measured by Static Gel Strength (SGS). Critical Static Gel Strength
(CSGS) is the value of gel where the hydrostatic pressure in the annulus is balanced with
formation pore pressure.

The CSGS may be computed by: CSGS = OBP*300*(Dh-Dcsg)/L

where OBP – overbalance pressure (psi),

Dh – open hole diameter (inch),
Dcsg – casing diameter (inch),
L – length of the cement column (ft)
300 – conversion factor
CSGS - Critical Static Gel Strength (lb/100ft2)

The CSGS value may be defined as pressure decay limit, i. e. hydrostatic pressure decreases
below reservoir pressure allowing gas to migrate into the annulus. According to the computed
CSGS value, the severity risk of gas migration can be classified as following.

CSGS Very critical Critical Moderate Low Very low

Pa 0 - 25 25 - 75 75 – 150 150 – 250 > 250
lb/100 ft2 0 - 50 50 - 150 150 - 300 300 - 500 > 500

Some service company uses also another parameter to evaluate the gas migration risk
severity, i.e gas flow potential (GFP), which is a dimensionless value as showed in below table.
The GFP calculation can be made with some suitable software and may be used as an
indication of probability to have a gas flow during WOC for particular well condition.

4.11 HYDRAULIC PROGRAM

This paragraphs contains the hydraulic calculations for the main drilling string programmed.
The rig is equipped with four pumps National 14-P-220 Triplex.
The 6 ½” pump liner will be used for 26” and 17 ½” sections. For the 12 ¼” section (and 8 ½”
contingency section) the 5 ½” pump liner will be used in order to reach higher pressure values.

Following the pump performance data:

4.11.1 26” HOLE SECTION

The phase will be drilled with reduced parameters (2500 l/min – 660 gpm) to avoid washing in
proximity of casing shoe and will be increased slowly to 4400 l/min (1160 gpm) after the first
15m drilled. The operating flow rate range has been calculated in according with Min/Max
operative flow rate (600-1200 gpm) of DD equipment.
The following tables show hydraulic results at the end of hole section:

For the calculation we assumed to use 6½” pump liner (relief valve set at 339 kg/cm 2 - 4824 psi
90% of liner max pressure) and a TFA of 1.227 (n°4 20/32”) in order to have a pressure loss
into the bit around 600psi to 800psi (pressure loss required to work with PowerV).
To obtain the flow rate is necessary to use two pumps at 96 strokes/min each (22.82 l/stk 100%
of theoretical value).

4.11.2 17 ½” HOLE SECTION

The phase will be drill with reduced parameters (3000 l/min – 790 gpm) to avoid washing in
proximity of casing shoe and will be increased slowly to 4400 l/min (1160 gpm) after the first
15m drilled. The operating flow rate range has been calculated in according with Min/Max
operative flow rate (600-1200 gpm) of DD equipment.
The following tables shows hydraulic results at the end of hole section:

into the bit around 600psi to 800psi (pressure loss required to work with PowerV).
To obtain the flow rate is necessary to use two pumps at 96 strokes/min each (22.82 l/stk 100%
of theoretical value).

4.11.3 12 ¼ ” HOLE SECTION

The phase will be drill with reduced parameters (2500 l/min – 660 gpm) to avoid washing in
proximity of casing shoe and will be increased slowly to 3400 l/min (920 gpm) after the first 15m
drilled. The operating flow rate range has been calculated in according with Min/Max operative
flow rate (600-1200 gpm) of DD equipment.
The following tables shows hydraulic results at the end of hole section:

For the calculation we assumed to use 5 ½” pump liner (relief valve set at 473 kg/cm 2 - 6727
psi 90% of liner max pressure) and a TFA of 1.203 (n°8 14/32”) in order to have a pressure loss
into the bit around 600psi to 800psi (pressure loss required to work with PowerV).
To obtain the flow rate is necessary to use three pumps at 69 strokes/min each (16.353 l/stk
100% of theoretical value).
