BUILDING FACILITIES

II TERM 2019 - 2020

Student:
 Bolívar Larrea Vergara
Professor:
 Ing. Arnaldo Bayona Malo
Deadline:
 January 24th 2019
1. Select a building (can be a house) that is convenient for you. The building cannot be
bigger than three stories and must have a water pressure system. Analyze the items
listed below and present your results in a table format (3 points).
a. Brief description of the water supply system
b. Volume of the low and/or elevated tank
Estimating a daily consumption of 300 [L/hab/day], as it’s referred in the “Table
16.2 Dotaciones para edificaciones de uso específico” of the NEC Chapter 16:

Cistern’s Dimensions:
Length: 1 [m]
Width: 1 [m]
Depth: 1.5 [m]
c. Characteristics of the hydro-pneumatic system (i.e. water pump and pressure tank)
d. Power of the water pump
e. Approximate value of the pressure tank´s volume
f. Approximate value of the Static Suction Head
g. On and off cycle times of the pump(s)
h. Average number of building occupants (show breakdown for different roles)
There are seven people living in the building, including me.

i. Schematic drawing/map with the location of the cistern and the building´s hydro-
pneumatic equipment, specifying the dimensions of each component.

j. Estimate ítem “b” based on the information collected in ítem “h”. Apply the
concepts learned in class. Write down your assumptions.

2. Compare the various distribution systems in low-rise and medium-rise buildings,

analyzing the design recommendations of each system (1 point).
Low Rise

It is in the consideration of the engineer in charge of the work, to design the water
distribution system. A low-rise structure may have a low as elevated tank, or a
combination of both. From the NEC Chapter 16, Table 16.3, we can obtain the
minimum upright diameter.
Medium Rise

Fire protection systems for medium-rise and high-rise buildings must recognize and
modify the impediments and challenges that these structures inherently impose on fire
department operations. We have some considerations in medium-rise buildings, in
terms of fire protection, such as:

 Automatic water sprinkler systems (based on NFPA-13).

 Siamese shots for firefighters (in building facade).
 Helipad Protection, based on NFPA-418.

3. Propose the technical specifications for the items mentioned below, considering:
general description; construction process; applicable standards; equipment and
materials; tests; measurement unit and form of payment (1 point).
Items:

(a) Pump installation

General description

The pump unit need to be placed on a flat surface, capable of supporting the load. There
has to be enough space around the pump, for operation and maintenance.

Construction process

The procedure in the construction must follow the manufacturer’s manual.

Applicable standards

National Fire Protection Association (NFPA 20:1999)

Equipment and materials

 Casings
 Mechanical seals
 Crimp connectors
 Wire cutters
 Piping
 Rope
Tests

 APT (Aquifer Performance Test)

 Recovery Test.
 Constant Rate Tests
 Step-Drawdowns Tests

Horsepower [hp]

(b) Butterfly valve installation

General description

Most of the problems in the installation of butterfly valves in the field are directly
related to bad procedures. For this reason, it is advisable to consider best practices when
designing pipes and installing the valve.

Construction process

 You have to make sure the pipeline and flange faces are clean.
 Align the pipe-work, and spread the flanges enough to allow the valve body to
be easily inserted.
 Check that the valve disc has been set to about 10% open.
 Insert the valve between the flanges

Applicable standards

American Petroleum Institute (API 609), NTC 2193. ISO 7005.2. GB/T 9113.1.

Equipment and materials

 Body
 Taper pin
 Key
 Disc

Tests

 [kPa]

(c) Plastic piping installation

General description

PVC, PEX, and other thermoplastic pipes, offer excellent service, that last over 40
years. There are different pipe’s properties needed for certain structure.

Construction process

 Foundation
 Bedding
 Initial and Final backfill

Applicable standards

 F1281 – 17. Standard Specification for Crosslinked

Polyethylene/Aluminum/Crosslinked Polyethylene (PEX-AL-PEX) Pressure
Pipe.
 F2536 – 17. Standard Guide for Installing Plastic DWV Piping Suspended from
On-Grade Slabs.
 D1598 - 15a. Standard Test Method for Time-to-Failure of Plastic Pipe Under
Constant Internal Pressure.
 D2122 – 16. Standard Test Method for Determining Dimensions of
Thermoplastic Pipe and Fittings.
