• Think about the question before answering. You have a lot of time to solve the paper but every question would
require time to see what the examiner wants. Do not rush.
1. Read this statement carefully: There are three trains waiting to enter a track at three different points. Each of these
points is at one corner of an equilateral triangle. For each of the trains, it can enter the track and move either
in clockwise direction or anti-clockwise direction. After entering the track, the trains can neither stop nor change
direction.
Assume all three trains will move at a constant speed of 120km/h. On entering the track, the probability of picking
the clockwise direction is 0.21 for each train. The trains do not communicate their decision to each other.
Compute the probability of a collision in this scenario. [10]
2. This question does not require computation. It only requires that you think about the chances carefully and make a
decision given the situation.
In a battle scenario, a battalion is suffering heavy casualties. Several of their soldiers are getting shot in battle and
the number of deaths on the front-lines is pretty high. The people who somehow manage to return to the base have
the following frequencies of bullet injuries in different parts of their bodies:
Head: 50%, Torso: 25%, Legs: 5%, Arms: 20%
(Assume that the soldiers are being shot with equal probability in all parts of their body.)
Since there is limited budget for fashioning some sort of armor, the commander can only have armor made for one
part of the body. Based on the above information, what part of the body should the armor be created for? [5]
5. Search for your favorite dish on the search engine of your choice. (Yes, we are taking about food here!) In the
search results, go to the page 5 and pick the first text-based result you get. In this page, pick the first 50 characters
and convert them to their ASCII values.
This is your dataset of numbers.
Calculate the mean, median and mode of the numbers. [15]
6. Given the above dataset, compute the probability of seeing the character ‘h’ after the character ‘t’. If neither of these
two characters appear in your dataset, pick any two characters that do and compute based on that. [10]
