4.3. Operating Mechanism:

A spring operating mechanism mounted inside a sheet steel cabinet is used to

provide energy required for breaker operation. The closing springs, which are charged
manually or through a motor provide the energy for closing the VCB and for applying
sufficient contact pressure on moving contacts of vacuum interrupters through the contact
loading springs.

The contact loading springs & opening spring provide the energy during the opening
of the CB. The mechanism energy is transmitted to the VIs via drive insulator during closing
as well as opening. There are two dashpots - One in the operating mechanism & the other in
the Drive Chamber which provide sufficient damping during the opening operation of the CB
which is very important for long life of VI’s.

4.4. Linkages For The CB Operations:

The Drive chamber shaft, Contact loading springs & Dashpot are assembled in upper
side of Mechanism Box and the Pole Assemblies are mounted on the top of the Drive
Chamber. Drive Chamber Shaft is connected with Operating Mechanism through a tie rod.

The contact force on the fixed contact is applied by the moving contact of the VI in
closed position by contact loading springs. Opening spring assembly which is expended
during closing operation provides opening force during opening of the breaker.

4.5. Working Of Operating Mechanism:

4.5.1. Charging Operation:

Initially, the VCB is open and closing springs are DISCHARGED/FREE. Charging of
closing springs is done either manually with the help of charging handle or electrically
through a motor. The CHARGED indicator shows the status of the closing spring.
A. Manual Charging:

The closing spring is charged by inserting the hand crank in an opening on the gear
box & rotating it in clockwise direction. The closing spring will start to elongate. Continue
rotations (approx.24) by hand crank until the spring CHARGED indication appears. At the
same time, an audible clicking sound indicates that the closing pawl is latched. The CB is
now ready for closing.
In order to prevent overcharging, stop the crank handle movement as soon as
(i) a distinct ‘click’ sound is heard and (ii) indicator changes over to CHARGED position.

B. Motor Charging Operation:

To begin with closing spring is in DISCHARGED state. As soon as electric supply is

given to the motor mounted on the gear box, it will rotate the shaft which in turn will rotate
the gears. The remaining changing operation is similar to the manual charging. When the
springs are about to get charged fully, the crank arm mounted on the crank shaft will operate
the limit switch through lever, and supply to the motor will be cut-off. The motor takes about
12 seconds to charge the springs.

The closing springs will get automatically recharged through the spring charging
motor as soon as they get discharged on closing of the breaker.

4.5.2. Closing Operation:

When the springs are fully CHARGED, the VCB is ready for closing operation.

A. Manual closing:

Press the closing (red) push button. It pushes an interlocked part & the Operating
Mechanism shaft will turn about its axis. The rotation of Operating Mechanism shaft will turn
the Drive Chamber shaft via a tie rod. This in turn causes three drive insulator rods to move
up and the breaker gets CLOSED. The opening spring mounted in the operating mechanism
& contact loading springs mounted below each pole get charged during closing operation.
The breaker position indicator changes to ON and the spring charging indicator changes to
FREE.
It is possible to re-charge the closing springs in this position.

B. Electrical Closing:

When supply is given to closing release, its plunger pushes interlocked part.
This causes the Operating Mechanism shaft to turn. The remaining closing operation is
similar to manual closing operation. The supply to the motor is re-connected immediately
on closing of the CB due to rotation of shaft lever and limit switch and the closing spring
gets re-charged.

The breaker position indicator changes over to ON, and after immediate re-
charging, the spring charging indicator will show CHARGED.

7
stelmec

C. Slow Closing:

The Operating Mechanism has been provided with slow closing feature. This
has been provided only for testing purpose. Before slow closing the CB, ensure that the
upstream / downstream isolators / CBs are open. Insert the handle on the rod provided
on right side of Operating Mechanism. Press the handle downward to close the breaker.
The mechanical indicator on the mechanism changes to ON position.

Warning:
Use this feature only for testing when electrical supply is not made to
main and control circuits.

4.5.3. Opening Operation:

When the VCB is CLOSED, it can be opened in the following way:

A. Manual Opening:
Press the opening (green) push button. This will turn the trip shaft through tripping
paddle, which in turn release the tripping latch. The energy of opening springs and contact
loading springs will cause the movement of linkages & will turn the Drive Chamber shaft so
that the circuit breaker will OPEN.

The mechanism is held in the ON position (i.e. circuit breaker is in closed position) by
a latch and over toggle linkage. Tripping is achieved by upsetting the over toggle linkage.
The energy required for opening the circuit breaker is provided by opening spring. The
opening spring gets compressed during closing operation. The CB can be opened with
closing spring either in the charged or free condition. The latch lever is automatically
disengaged during the opening stroke and tension spring automatically resets the toggle
linkage ready for re-closing. Manual tripping via trip push button and electrical tripping via an
opening release is provided.

B. Electrical Opening:
When supply is given to opening release, its plunger will push the tripping shaft,
causing it to turn. The remaining operation is similar to manual opening operation.
The anti-pumping device in the operating mechanism ensures that the CB is not
repeatedly closed & opened in the event of simultaneous ON & OFF commands.

4.6. Auxiliary Switch:

This switch has 5NO (Normally Open) + 5NC (Normally Closed) contacts when the
CB is OPEN and the mechanism is DISCHARGED. These contacts are CB operated and
driven by a link attached with the Operating Mechanism shaft. 1NO+1NC of these contacts
is used in the internal circuits to cut-off the control supply to the closing release (and opening
release) as soon as the breaker is CLOSED (or OPENED.)

When the CB is CLOSED, ‘NC’ contacts open & vice versa. When the CB is
OPENED, the auxiliary contacts regain their original status.

8

4.7. Instrument Panel:

In this, all the instruments, indicating lamps, etc. are mounted and all the control
wires from VCB mechanism CTs, etc., are brought into this chamber and wired as per
schematic diagram, for more details please refer to the relevant schematic diagram and
general arrangement drawing supplied.

5. INSTALLATION

5.1 General

Proper installation of CB structure plays an important role. The drawings of overall

views, cross sectional views, foundation plans etc. are provided so that suitable preparation
of the infrastructure can be made prior to arrival of switching device and its installation.
5.2 Foundation

The base or foundation must be strong enough to support the dead & dynamic
weight of the circuit-breaker. The foundation must be laid well in advance before the
installation so that the switchgear is installed on a smooth and levelled surface. Refer GA
drawing for making foundation.
5.3 Erection

Properly grout the foundation bolts of the CB on a levelled foundation area as per the
foundation plan shown in GA drawing. Join pillars & supporting angles to make CB structure
by using the supplied bolts. Use torque wrench to ensure 110 Nm (+/-10%) with M12 bolts
for steel to steel joints.

Then place the CB structure on the foundation and join it to M20 foundation bolts.
Mount the top section of CB on the structure. This must be handled with suitable lifting and
moving arrangement so that the porcelain hollow insulators of poles are not damaged.
Remove pole the shorting angle.

Connect earthing terminals of the CB to the main earth of the station. Drill only
required holes in the gland plate of mech. box. Ensure to close unused holes on the gland
plate by means such as rubber grommets. Mount cable glands for control cables.
Connect HV lines to the terminal connectors mounted on incoming and outgoing
terminal pads on the CB.Ensure smooth & bright surfaces on parts to be joined. Use acid-
free greasebetween joints & immediately make the joint.

Caution:
All parts of Operating Mechanism are factory preset. Do not change their setting in any
manner.

Warning:
External & accessible internal parts will be cleaned only when CB is in open state &
closing spring is discharged.

6. PRE-COMISSIONING CHECKS

Warning:
Before commissioning the equipment, make sure that the HV incoming / outgoing
terminals of the switchgear are isolated.

6.1 Mechanical Operation:

Operate the breaker a few times to ensure that the operating mechanism closes,
opens, charges the closing spring, operates auxiliary switches etc. satisfactorily. Note
mark for the contact wear indication and mechanical operation counter reading in the log
book.
6.2 Insulation Resistance Test:

Primary Insulation: This indicates the insulation associated with the high voltage circuit.
Measure the insulation resistance to earth to each phase in turn preferably using 5kV
Megger kit.Insulation resistance measured in both phase to phase and phase to earth
condition should be more than 100 Mega Ohms.
Secondary Insulation:The secondary wiring associated with the unit should be tested by
first looping at all the ends of wires and at some convenient point such as terminal board.
Measure the insulation resistance between wiring terminals to earth using 500V megger.
Insulation resistance should be more than 1 Mega Ohms

NOTE: While carrying out above testing, it should be remembered that insulation
resistance varies considerably with atmospheric condition and dryness & cleanness
of the equipment. In such a case cleaning, moisture removal should be done to
restore required insulation resistance.
6.3 Electrical Operation:

Check LV wiring for any damages/looseness. The same shall be as per approved
schematic diagrams. Connect the control cables as per the schematic diagram.

Ensure auxiliary supply to the terminals as per approved schematic diagram for
functioning of circuit-breaker. Also ensure supply to the space heater.

Caution:
• Ensure that the space heater is always on irrespective of whether CB is in
service or not in order to prevent condensation of moisture on insulating
components!
• Remember when supply voltage is applied, the motor starts immediately &
charges the closing spring.

Check the control voltage, relay locking etc. before energizing the circuit. Ensure that
the CT secondary star point is earthed. Connect required AC/DC supply and operate the CB
through the control switches. And also check the indication circuits. The control operation
shall be carried out both locally and remotely. The Relay instrument operation may be
checked through secondary injection or otherwise ensure the setting of the relay and rotate
the disc for tripping operation.

10

7. COMISSIONING

Danger:

High Voltage is now applied to incoming & outgoing terminals of the CB. Hence only
trained / qualified persons shall operate this switchgear.
Accidental touching will lead to harmful injury or fatal death!

Caution:

The CB may be manually operated to avoid injuries which may occur due to sudden
starting of motor.

Instructions for Operations of the device:

To operate the circuit breaker:

• Charge the spring by energizing the motor electrically or manually by spring charging
handle.
• Close the CB by closing release electrically or by pressing red push button manually.
The motor will automatically re-charge the spring after closing operation, enabling rapid
close to be carried out after open.
• Press green push button to open manually or switch off electrically, as necessary for
checking.

8. MAINTENANCE & INSPECTION

As operating energy required is less in comparison with types & having less no. of
moving parts, the CB requires minimum maintenance. The various maintenance
checkpoints & methods to ensure consistent performance are mentioned in clause No. 11.
Ensure that CB is off & springs discharged, isolated & earthed. Also disconnect
control supply.
As per the site conditions, the checking should be done for the first time after 2000
operations or once a year, whichever is earlier and thereafter every year or 5000
operations, whichever is earlier. This may include following:
A. Visual inspection for dust accumulation, condensation spots & fungus etc. Refer
Table 1 for more details.
B. Cleaning of interior of mechanism box and parts such as releases & their plungers,
joints in operating mechanism & also external surfaces of porcelain insulators.
C. Checking continuity of earthing.
D. Functioning of space heater.
E. The VI does not require any Maintenance. However, they have to be replaced at the
end of contact wear limit or loss of vacuum or 20,000 mechanical operation is
performed. High Voltage test to check the health of VI should be carried out on all
three VIs separated by applying 22.4 kV RMS for 30 seconds across open contacts.
F. Insulation resistance tests as per Table 2. (The operators should stay away at least
five meters of the equipment during the test.)

11
stelmec
beyond boundaries

G. Measurement of contact wear:

The contact wear of the VI is allowed for 3mm. The operator has to record the
contact loading spring compression before commissioning in all the three phases which can
be compared during maintenance schedule so that the VI Status would be known. Close the
CB and check the dimension of the contact loading spring and compare the recorded value.
If the difference is more than 3mm then VI should be replaced.

9. SPARE/REPLACEMENT OF PARTS

Customers are advised not to replace poles or any of the poles of the CB as this
will upset factory settings & will lead to malfunction during normal & abnormal situations.

Replacement of other parts like coil, motors, micro switches, etc. shall be done
only by trained personnel at our Works which can be arranged on specific request.
