Q#1:
a) How prestress concrete behaves, Explain in your own words.
b) Is prestressed concrete is usually used for long span (Yes/No)? Justify

Solution#1
A)
Concrete is strong in compression but week in tension due to low tensile capacity. The Prestressed
concrete is a concrete system into which internal stresses are deliberately induced without any form of
external loads to improve its performance. The internal stresses induced in the concrete structure is
used to counteract the stresses coming from the external load application.
B)
Yes prestressed concrete is used for long span. Because its better quality control and rapid
construction and Also high moment of inertia as well as increase durability.

Q#2
A) Why an engineer need prestressed concrete?
B) Elaborate with pertinent examples, stages of loading.
Solution#2
A)
Prestressed concrete need to civil engineer because prestressed concrete structure is the one of the
most advancement in civil engineering construction field. Its suitable for long and medium span
structure.
B)
Stages of loading
1):Initial stage
The member is under pre-stress but is not subjected to any superimposed external loads.

This stage is critical for the strength of tendons. Often the maximum stress to which the wires will be
subjected throughout their life may occur at this stage.

2):Final stage
It is often desirable to limit the deflection under sustained loads sue to its own weight and dead loads.

In this stage the actual working loads come on the structure. The designer must consider various
combinations of live loads on different parts of the structure with lateral loads such as wind and
earthquake.

3):Intermediate stage

This stage include the load during transportation of the prestressed member.

Q#3.
A) An AASHTO prestressed simply supported I beam has a span of 34ftand is 36in. deep. Its cross
section is shown. it is subjected to a live load intensity W L =3600plf. Determine the required 1/2 // dia,
stress relieved, seven wire strand, to resist the applied gravity load and self-weight of the beam assuming
the tendon eccentricity at midspan ec= 13.12 in. Maximum permissible stress are as follows
, , ,
