TITLE: Learner’s equity in education

ISSUES:

 Students from indigenous and other minority groups, and students with physical or learning
disabilities will receive more support in order to level the playing field.
- The learners with the learning disabilities will receive a lot of enhancement program in
order to increase their progression towards the desire level or achievement in learning.
- The learners from the rural area, various ethnic group and minority will not be left behind
from the other majority groups of students in term of education and they will be treated
fairly. (According to schooladvisor article on 21 Feb 2013, entitled Education Blueprint
Promises Better Equity In Education, they stated the NEB which is
 Motivate students
 Increase intrinsic motivation to further study and succeed.

 Gender gap – girls consistently outperform boys, and as boys are more likely to drop out of
school than girls.
- The learners’ likely boys more exposed towards the negative activity that happens our
current situation such as racing illegally and drug abuse.
- The learners easily influence by their peers that leading such as their classmate and
tuition mate which leading towards negative behaviour such as smoking, truancy, and
bullies.
 Practice good behaviour, follow the rules,
 find good friends.

 Equal opportunity in every aspect for the learners.

- The learners from different background can have conversation and doing collaboration
work and activity in the classroom freely without having any obstacles and being threated.
- The learners that comes from various religion, cultures, background and racial can have
access towards the school facilities such as computer and library without any condition
like others pupils or learners. (Malaysia Today online news on 24 th May 2010)
 Conducive environment,
 promote positive learning,
 no bias or racism perform by teacher.
 Prevent the prejudice towards other races in class

1. Socio-economic status continues to have a large impact on student performance (NEB)

- The evidence consistently demonstrates that students from poor families are less likely to
perform as well as students from middle-income or high-income households.
 Focus more on work rather than study in order to survive,
 problem to learn at home bcoz no one to teach me (due to lack of knowledge)
2. The “Lost Boys” issue: the gender gap is widening (NEB)

Girls consistently outperform boys. The difference in performance is already evident at UPSR level
and increases over the course of a student’s academic career. Further, boys are more likely to drop
out, leading to a situation wherein the male to female ratio for any given cohort decreases from Year 1
to Form 5.. This gap between the genders has widened at the PMR and SPM level over the last five
years, a trend that if unchecked, runs the risk of creating a community of educationally marginalised
young Malaysian men. This problem is compounded by the fact that boys from poor families are also
more likely to drop out from school to start work early in order to help support their families.

 Manage time properly

 Make a schedule for learning session at home.

According to research done by Hazri Jamil, the students of USM entitled Historical Overview of
Malaysia's Experience in Enhancing Equity and Quality of Education: Focusing on Management and
Mediation of Multiethnic Issues. In the Malaysian education system, the Chinese and Indian
communities have strong sentiments and legacies in relation to mother tongue education. This lead to
mother tongue issue in Malaysian education. The learners having difficulty to learn English Language
as it have been influenced by their own mother tongue language. For the Chinese they talk in
mandarin, Indian is Tamil Language, and the major race is Malay which is BM. They were having
difficulty to learn and master the EL as the EL is a foreign language for them.

 Students give big effort to learn EL,

 going for extra class/ tuition to learn more

3. Gap in student performance persists between private and public schools. (NEB)
- According to NEB, private school achieve 6% higher than public schools at SPM. While
some of this achievement gap may be due to a better learning environment and facilities.
 Lead to easy learning,
 ICT integration.

4. Students across different school-types and from various socio-economic backgrounds are
encouraged to mix through co-curricular activities like sports and debating competitions.
