SECTION A

1. Write short notes on the following:


a. Genetic code. [4]
b. Transamination. [3]
c. Urea cycling. [5]
d. Cell mediated protein degradation. [8]
2. a. How do photosynthetic plants capture and use light energy? [6]

b. How is chlorophyll adapted to its function? [4]

c. Define photorespiration and explain how CAM and C4 plants are


adapted to hot arid environments. [10]

3. Discuss the protein biodegradation pathways in mammals. [20]

SECTION B

4. Increasing substrate concentration beyond a certain point may not translate to an


increase in reaction velocity. Discuss. [20]

5. a. With the aid of a diagram, explain the chemical reactions that take place
during the light dependant reactions of photosynthesis. [10]
b. Give reaction sequences needed to accomplish the following, (identify all
enzymes, substrates and products of each reaction):
i. Formation of PEP from pyruvate in mammals. [5]
ii. Conversion of fructose 1-6, biphosphate to glucose. [5]
6. Using examples, discuss integration and control of metabolic pathways in the
cell. [20]
7. Compare and contrast beta oxidation and de-novo synthesis of fatty acids. [20]
