UPGRADATION OF HIGHWAY STARTING FROM JUNCTION WITH NH-44 AT PANIPAT CONNECTING

KAIRANA,SHAMLI ,MUZAFFARNAGAR ,MIRZAPUR ,BIJNOR AND TERMINATING AT ITS JUNCTION
WITH NH-74 AT KOTWALI TO TWO/FOUR LANE WITH PAVED SHOULDER CONFIGURATION ON NH-
709AD IN THE STATE OF UP ON EPC MODE (PKG-1)

The investigations are carried out to assess the suitability (strength characteristics) of
the existing sub-grade soil along the proposed project corridor for assessment
pavement composition. Also the soil from borrow areas was tested to access its quality
to check its suitability for its use in construction of embankment and subgrade for
widening purpose.

Fieldwork including pit investigations and sample collection was carried out, during 17july
2020 Laboratory tests were conducted on collected samples confirming to relevant
IS/MORT&H specifications and the technical specifications provided by the Employer.

2.0 SAMPLING ANDTESTING

Field tests were conducted and also samples of soil and aggregate were collected from
subgrade of existing road and pavement layers and stone metal / sand quarries. Table
1 presents the sampling criteria, tests and testing procedures adopted for various field
and laboratory tests.

2.1 Field Investigations

A total of 5 pits were dug along the alignment at the locations as specified in the work order.

Following field tests were conducted at the test pits.

1. Existing crust composition measurement.
2. Collection of samples of subgrade soil for laboratory testing.

2.2 Laboratory Testing

2.2.1Laboratory Testing on Sub grade Soil Samples from Pits and Borrow Areas

Sub grade and borrow area soil samples were tested for following tests:
1. Characterization (Grain size, Atter berg limits and free Swell Index) at each of the
sub grade strength test pit.
2. Laboratory moisture-density characteristics.
3. 4-day soaked CBR test.
Various lab test on sub grade soil samples collected from pits and soil samples collected
from borrow areas as shown in above in table 1 were conducted in laboratory and
results of the same is annexed herewith is given below in table 3 and table 4
respectively.
Lead chart for sample collection from borrow areas is shown as below.
