The Filipino Youth: A Driving Force in Nation-Building

In these growing times, many have heard of the popular saying that the “youth is the hope of our
future,” and that they are the instruments of change that the society needs in continuously building
our nation. With the availability of information through advanced technology and improved quality of
education in this modern age, they are equipped with various tools that help them in harnessing their
skills and exploring their potential. However, even with these driving changes and innovations, the
lack of support and liberalization within the educational system hinders the youth from bringing out
their full potential in contributing to society. Students are limited to the activities set by the curriculum,
leaving little to no room for opportunities that allow them to express their ideas and perspectives that
can help change the world. Moreover, liberating the youth and supporting their endeavors is important
to hone an environment that promotes innovation, collaboration, and coordination that will benefit our
nation.

Throughout the years, the Philippines continuously faces numerous pressing issues such as
environmental degradation and discrimination that affect the growth of the country. With this, the
Filipino youth is seen as a driving force for change and development to address the issues
experienced by the country. As an example, 15-year old Filipino inventor Amin Hataman created
biodegradable plastic bags with the use of nata de coco, a coconut byproduct. The bags naturally
disintegrate after several days compared to most plastics that take years to decompose. He came up
with this with the goal of reducing the use and damages brought by plastics. This discovery and
attitude prove how the youth is capable of innovating and formulating solutions that benefit society
wh9en given guidance and opportunity.

Indeed, the youth’s role is important in achieving the long-term goals of establishing a stable
community for the benefit of all. Hence, they serve as our builders who are passionate about making
a difference in this world full of complexities and vulnerabilities—providing them with the necessary
tools gives them the capability to fix and repair the issues that are present in the current situation. It
may be difficult to develop and build an ideal nation, but by inspiring the youth, our builders of today,
we can strengthen the foundation for a better tomorrow.
Liberating the Youth:

In these growing times, many have heard of the popular saying that the “youth is the hope of our
future,” and that they are the instruments of change that the society needs in continuously building
our nation. The Filipino Catholic bishops have declared 2019 as the “Year of the Youth,” promoting
the concept that the youth is gifted, beloved, and empowered— supporting the youth in mission,
youth in action, and youth in a progressive direction for building the nation. With the availability of
information through advanced technology and improved quality of education in this modern age, they
are equipped with various tools that help them in harnessing their skills and exploring their
potential. Moreover, liberating the youth and supporting their endeavors is important to hone an

flawed, it should not limit or cage the learners but instead it should liberate them by setting high
hopes and upholding the possibilities. By providing opportunities for them to express their ideas and
