 Health and Safety Foundations
Mission of the Company is how hazards can be prevented. Accordingly define
Company Safety and Health policies and objectives of the Safety and Health
Program. Organization and Operation of the Company Safety Committee.
Arrange various types of training for the workforce.

Some of the Benefits of a Safety and Health Program include:

• Reducing the frequency and severity of injuries and property damage

• Reducing worker’s compensation costs, insurance premiums, and financial
penalties for regulatory violations.

The Responsibilities of the Company and each person using equipment &
facilities are:
1. promote safe work practices
2. provide safe equipment and facilities
a. follow proper and safe procedures
b. report accidents promptly
c. bring unsafe conditions (or practices) to supervisor’s attention
 Safety and Health Program Objectives
• Inform management and personnel of the hazards present and appropriate protective
measures
• Provide training necessary for personnel to safely perform their work functions
• Eliminate hazards through the safe design of equipment, systems, and processes
• Reduce the risk of injury or property damage through the implementation of accident
prevention techniques
• Provide on the job instruction to personnel on how to work safely in the Company
environment

An effective accident prevention program, as part of the Safety

and Health Program, can reduce costs associated with accidents,
providing additional funds for Company upgrades and personnel
wages. (higher employee productivity and morale)
 What is an Accident?
An "accident" is an unplanned, undesired event that may or may
not result in injury or property damage, that interferes with the
completion of an assigned task.
A "near miss" is a form of an accident that does not result in
injury or property damage.
Causes of Accidents
Unsafe Conditions - hazardous conditions or circumstances that
could lead directly to an accident.
Unsafe Acts - occurs when a worker ignores or is not aware of a
standard operating procedure or safe work practice designed to
protect the worker and prevent accident

• Operating equipment or machinery without permission
• Defeating safety devices
• Using defective equipment
• Using the wrong tool for the job
• Not using personal protective equipment
• Incorrect lifting techniques
• Working while intoxicated

1. State a case study of a construction site/ workshop /daily life
that you have observed and prepare a list of unsafe acts &
unsafe conditions that may exist.
2. Report an incident/ near miss/ accident that you may have
observed at a construction site. Can you give an estimate of
the financial implications of it.

Up to 20% marks in the final evaluation of the subject shall be

determined on the basis of assignments/quizzes.
