Revision 2 is issued to update paragraphs 1., PLANNING INFORMATION, 2., MATERIAL


INFORMATION, and 3., ACCOMPLISHMENT INSTRUCTIONS.

1. PLANNING INFORMATION

A. Effectivity

CFM56-3-B1, -3B-2, -3C-1

CFM56-3-B1 and CFM56-3C-1 engines may be affected by this Service Bulletin.

This Service Bulletin supersedes CFM56-3 S/B 72-0121 and CFM56-3


S/B 72-0418 for conversion of CFM56-3-B1 or CFM56-3B-2 engine model to or from
CFM56-3C-1 engine models.

For conversion of CFM56-3-B1 and CFM56-3B-2 engine models to a CFM56-3C-1


engine model refer to CFM56-3 S/B 72-0804.

For conversion of CFM56-3B-2 and CFM56-3C-1 engine models to a CFM56-3-B1


engine model refer to CFM56-3 S/B 72-0806.

B. Description

This Service Bulletin provides instructions to convert a CFM56-3-B1 or CFM56-3C-1


engine model to a CFM56-3B-2 engine model. The matrix below is a reference to
the appropriate paragraphs in this Service Bulletin to perform the conversion.

C. Compliance

This Service Bulletin may be applied at the operator's option, consistent with the
operator's contractual arrangements with CFM International for the affected CFM56
engine models.

NOTE 1: The change in this Service Bulletin can be accomplished in shop or on wing.

The marking of the identification plate must be accomplished per CFM56-3


S/B 72-0910.

NOTE 2: Life limits of rotating parts may be affected. Refer to Chapter 5 of the Engine
Shop Manual (ESM).

D. Concurrent Requirements

E. Reason

(1) Objective:

To provide operators with the option of converting from one engine model to
another.

All parts identified in this Service Bulletin are authorized to be used on


the CFM56-3B-2 engine by other Service Bulletins or the CFM56-3B-2
Certification Report.

F. Approval

The technical content of this Service Bulletin is approved by the FAA and under the
Authority of DOA No. EASA.21J.086.

G. Manpower

After you get access to the engine, you will need approximately:

(1) 24 man-hours to convert a CFM56-3-B1 engine with no timer to a CFM56-3B-2


engine with no timer.

(2) 32 man-hours to convert a CFM56-3-B1 engine with no timer to a CFM56-3B-2


engine with a deactive timer.

(3) 30 man-hours to convert a CFM56-3-B1 engine with no timer to a CFM56-3B-2


engine with an active timer.

(4) 32 man-hours to convert a CFM56-3-B1 engine with a deactive timer to a


CFM56- 3B-2 engine with no timer.

(5) 24 man-hours to convert a CFM56-3-B1 engine with a deactive timer to a


CFM56- 3B-2 engine with a deactive timer.

(6) 26 man-hours to convert a CFM56-3-B1 engine with a deactive timer to a


CFM56- 3B-2 engine with an active timer.

(7) 34 man-hours to convert a CFM56-3C-1 engine with a deactive timer to a

Accomplishment Instructions for timer installation and required
material.

NOTE 5: The turbine clearance control (TCC) timer is optional on the


CFM56-3B-2 engine and may be installed as active or deactive. An
active timer is not authorized on the CFM56-3-B1 engine but may
be installed deactivated for conversion purpose. The active timer is
required on the 23.5k thrust application on the CFM56-3C-1 engine but
may be deactivated for rerated thrust applications. Table 1 lists the part
numbers for the timer and installations kits.

NOTE 6: Previously or subsequently authorized parts may be used provided


they are model coded for the CFM56-3B-2 engine. Additional
supporting hardware is not listed above.

3. ACCOMPLISHMENT INSTRUCTIONS

A. General

NOTE: All engines converted to a CFM56-3B-2 engine models must have


37 degree fan blades, fan blade dampers, and associated hardware
installed as described in CFM56-3 S/B 72-A0916.

(1) To Convert a CFM56-3-B1 Engine with No Timer to a CFM56-3B-2 Engine


with No Timer:

(a) Perform the tasks in paragraphs 3.A.(13) and 3.A.(14).

NOTE 1: VSV hardware change is not required when converting engine


from CFM56-3-B1 pre-CFM56-3 S/B 72-1000 or pre-CFM56-3
S/B 72-1031 to a CFM56-3B-2 pre-CFM56-3 S/B 72-1000 or
pre-CFM56-3 S/B 72-1031 configuration.

NOTE 2: VSV hardware change is not required when converting engine


from CFM56-3-B1 post-CFM56-3 S/B 72-1000 or post-CFM56-3

damper configuration for the CFM56-3B-2 engine model.

(14) Replace the MEC and power management control (PMC). Refer to
the 737-300/400/500 AMM, 73-21-01/401, MAIN ENGINE CONTROL
REMOVAL/INSTALLATION, and 73-21-04/401, POWER MANAGEMENT
CONTROL REMOVAL/INSTALLATION. Refer to Table 1 for the part numbers
required to complete step 3.A.(14).

(15) Replacement of variable stator actuator (1, Figure 1).

NOTE 1: If converting a CFM56-3C-1 post-CFM56-3 S/B 72-1000 or


post-CFM56-3 S/B 72-1031 to a CFM56-3B-2 post-CFM56-3
S/B 72-1000 or post-CFM56-3 S/B 72-1031, the following parts must
be replaced:

. Variable stator actuator (VSV actuator) (1, Figure 1)

. Bracket (2, Figure 2)

. Feedback variable stator coupling (coupling) (7, Figure 2)

NOTE 5: Refer to paragraph 2.A., Material - Price and Availability, Table 1 for
the part numbers required to complete this step.

(a) If necessary, remove the left and right side VSV actuators (1, Figure 1).
Refer to the Boeing 737-300/400/500 AMM, 75- 31-01/401, VARIABLE
STATOR VANE ACTUATOR -REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.

(b) If necessary, prepare CFM56-3B-2 VSV actuators (1, Figure 1) for


installation as follows. Refer to Figure 1 and CFM56-3 IPC, 72-00-02-31.

1 Lubricate six O-rings (2, Figure 1) with petrolatum lubricant


(CP2102).

2 Install O-ring (2, Figure 1) on plug (3) and install in left side
VSV actuator (1) at 8 o'clock position. Torque to 135-150 lb in.
(15.3-16.9 N·m) and safetywire.

3 Install nipples (4, Figure 1) and O-rings (2) in the left side VSV
actuator (1). Torque to 135-150 lb in. (15.3-16.9 N·m).

4 Install O-rings (2) on nipples (4) and install in right side VSV
actuator (1). Torque to 135-150 lb in. (15.3-16.9 N·m).

5 Install O-ring (2, Figure 1) on drain tube nipple (5), and install in right
side VSV actuator (1). Torque to 135-150 lb in. (15.3-16.9 N·m).

(c) Install left and right side VSV actuators (1, Figure 1). Do the following
steps:

NOTE 1: Make sure that the proper part number VSV actuator (1)
is installed. Refer to paragraph 2.A., Material - Price and
Availability, Table 1 for the part number required.

NOTE 2: Make sure that the proper configuration of bracket (2,


Figure 2) is installed on the left side VSV actuator (1). Refer to
paragraph 2.A., Material - Price and Availability, Table 1 for the
part number required. Refer to the CFM56-3 IPC, 72-00-02-15 or
72- 00-02-80.

1 Install the bracket (2, Figure 2) on the left side VSV actuator (1). Refer

STATOR VANE ACTUATOR -REMOVAL/INSTALLATION. Refer
to paragraph 2.A., Material - Price and Availability, Table 1 for the
part number required.

2 Install the left and right side VSV actuators (1). Refer to the Boeing
737-300/400/500 AMM, 75-31-01/401, VARIABLE STATOR VANE
ACTUATOR -REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.

(d) If required, replace the coupling (7, Figure 2) on the left side bellcrank
vane actuation support assembly as follows. Refer to paragraph 2.A.,
Material - Price and Availability, Table 1 for the part number required.

NOTE: Make sure that the proper configuration of coupling (7, Figure 2)
is installed on the left side VSV actuator (1). Refer to paragraph
2.A., Material - Price and Availability, Table 1 for the part number
required.

1 Remove the coupling (7, Figure 2) from the bellcrank vane actuation
support assembly in the sequence that follows.

a Remove the nut (8) and the bolt (9) from the coupling (7).

b Remove the bolt (10), washer (11), and the bushing (12).

c Remove the coupling (7) and the bushing (12) from the
sleeve (13).

d Remove the bolt (14) and the sleeve (13) from the bellcrank
vane actuation support assembly.

2 Install the coupling (7, Figure 2).

a Install the bolt (14) up through the support plates on the bellcrank
vane actuation support assembly.

b Install the sleeve (13), bushing (12), and coupling (7) over the
bolt (14). Engage the fork of the coupling (7) with the tab of the
bellcrank vane actuation support assembly.

c Install washer (11) and bushing (12) on the bolt (10).

d Install the bolt (10) into the sleeve (13). Torque the bolts (13)
and (10) to 110- 120 lb in. (12,4-13,6 N·m).

e Install the bolt (9) through the coupling (7) fork and the bellcrank
vane actuation support assembly tab. Install the nut (8) on the
bolt (9) and torque the nut (8) to 55-70 lb in. (6.2-7.9 N·m).

Install feedback VSV cable as follows:

Make sure that the proper part number of feedback VSV cable
is installed on the left side VSV actuator (1, Figure 1). Refer to
paragraph 2.A., Material - Price and Availability, Table 1 for the
part number required.

1 Install feedback VSV cable, clamps, and attachment brackets. Refer


to the Boeing 737-300/400/500 AMM, 75-31-02/401, VARIABLE
STATOR VANE FEEDBACK CABLE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.

(f) Perform feedback VSV cable rig check. Refer to the Boeing
737-300/400/500 AMM, 75-31-02/501, VARIABLE STATOR VANE
FEEDBACK CABLE-ADJUSTMENT/TEST.

(16) Determine timer tubing hardware configuration on engine to be modified.

(a) If the original CFM56-3-B1 engine model configuration tubing is


installed, comply with CFM56-3 S/B 72-0135.

(b) If commonality between the CFM56-3-B1 engine model configuration


exists as described in CFM56-3 S/B 72-0135, skip this step.

(17) Add timer hardware and/or deactivate timer. Refer to CFM56-3 S/B 72-0574.

(18) Install activated timer. Refer to CFM56-3 S/B 73-0053.

(19) Remove the timer and associated hardware. Refer to CFM56-3 S/B 73-0039,
and the CFM56-3 ESM, 72-00-00, DISASSEMBLY.

(20) Activate timer. Refer to CFM56-3 S/B 72-0584.

(21) Engine Test.

(a) Test the converted engine as described in the CFM56-3 ESM for
CFM56-3B-2 engine model (for engines which will have a subsequent
test run).

1 Engines may also be converted and tested on wing as described


in the Boeing 737-300/400/500 AMM with the power assurance
requirement for the CFM56-3B-2 engine model (for engines which
will not have a subsequent test cell run).

2 For conversion of CFM56-3-B1 to CFM56-3B-2 engine models


without a subsequent test cell run, the record of the last test cell run
must be obtained and must demonstrate that the engine had the
following margins. If the last test cell run did not demonstrate the
desired margin, the engine must have a subsequent test cell run.

(22) Certain rotating components may have different life limits in the CFM56-3B-2
engine model application. It is necessary to maintain accurate records of
the hours and cycles on each component at the time of conversion so that
part lives are preserved. Refer to CFM56-3 ESM, 05-11-00, to determine
remaining life for each rotating component.

(23) Remove, mark and install the identification plate (Figure 4). Refer to CFM56-3
S/B 72-0910.

NOTE: If CFM56-3 S/B 72-1000 or CFM56-3 S/B 72-1031 have been


incorporated, ensure that the Service Bulletin number is included on
the identification plate per CFM56-3 S/B 72-1000 or CFM56-3 S/B
72-1031.
