This Service Bulletin may be applied at the operator's option, consistent with the
operator's contractual arrangements with CFM International for the affected CFM56
engine models.
NOTE 1: The change in this Service Bulletin can be accomplished in shop or on wing.
NOTE 2: Life limits of rotating parts may be affected. Refer to Chapter 5 of the Engine
Shop Manual (ESM).

To provide operators with the option of converting from one engine model to
another.

This engine model conversion will provide greater flexibility to operators with
mixed CFM56-3 engine fleets.

3. ACCOMPLISHMENT INSTRUCTIONS
A. General

(d) Perform the tasks in paragraphs 3.A.(21), 3.A.(22), and 3.A.(23).
(a) Refer to CFM56-3 S/B 72-A0916 for required fan blade and fan blade
damper configuration for the CFM56-3B-2 engine model.
(14) Replace the MEC and power management control (PMC). Refer to
the 737-300/400/500 AMM, 73-21-01/401, MAIN ENGINE CONTROL
REMOVAL/INSTALLATION, and 73-21-04/401, POWER MANAGEMENT
CONTROL REMOVAL/INSTALLATION. Refer to Table 1 for the part numbers
required to complete step 3.A.(14).
NOTE 5: Refer to paragraph 2.A., Material - Price and Availability, Table 1 for
the part numbers required to complete this step.
(a) If necessary, remove the left and right side VSV actuators (1, Figure 1).
Refer to the Boeing 737-300/400/500 AMM, 75- 31-01/401, VARIABLE
STATOR VANE ACTUATOR -REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.
2 Install O-ring (2, Figure 1) on plug (3) and install in left side
VSV actuator (1) at 8 o'clock position. Torque to 135-150 lb in.
(15.3-16.9 N·m) and safetywire.
3 Install nipples (4, Figure 1) and O-rings (2) in the left side VSV
actuator (1). Torque to 135-150 lb in. (15.3-16.9 N·m).
4 Install O-rings (2) on nipples (4) and install in right side VSV
actuator (1). Torque to 135-150 lb in. (15.3-16.9 N·m).
5 Install O-ring (2, Figure 1) on drain tube nipple (5), and install in right
side VSV actuator (1). Torque to 135-150 lb in. (15.3-16.9 N·m).
(c) Install left and right side VSV actuators (1, Figure 1). Do the following
steps:
NOTE 1: Make sure that the proper part number VSV actuator (1)
is installed. Refer to paragraph 2.A., Material - Price and
Availability, Table 1 for the part number required.
NOTE 3: Make sure that the proper configuration of VSV stage 3 tie rod
is installed on the left and right side VSV actuation assembly.
Refer to Figure 3.
1 Install the bracket (2, Figure 2) on the left side VSV actuator (1). Refer
to the Boeing 737-300/400/500 AMM, 75-31-01/401, VARIABLE
STATOR VANE ACTUATOR -REMOVAL/INSTALLATION. Refer
to paragraph 2.A., Material - Price and Availability, Table 1 for the
part number required.
2 Install the left and right side VSV actuators (1). Refer to the Boeing
737-300/400/500 AMM, 75-31-01/401, VARIABLE STATOR VANE
ACTUATOR -REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.
(d) If required, replace the coupling (7, Figure 2) on the left side bellcrank
vane actuation support assembly as follows. Refer to paragraph 2.A.,
Material - Price and Availability, Table 1 for the part number required.
NOTE: Make sure that the proper configuration of coupling (7, Figure 2)
is installed on the left side VSV actuator (1). Refer to paragraph
2.A., Material - Price and Availability, Table 1 for the part number
required.
1 Remove the coupling (7, Figure 2) from the bellcrank vane actuation
support assembly in the sequence that follows.
a Remove the nut (8) and the bolt (9) from the coupling (7).
b Remove the bolt (10), washer (11), and the bushing (12).
c Remove the coupling (7) and the bushing (12) from the
sleeve (13).
d Remove the bolt (14) and the sleeve (13) from the bellcrank
vane actuation support assembly.
a Install the bolt (14) up through the support plates on the bellcrank
vane actuation support assembly.
b Install the sleeve (13), bushing (12), and coupling (7) over the
bolt (14). Engage the fork of the coupling (7) with the tab of the
bellcrank vane actuation support assembly.
d Install the bolt (10) into the sleeve (13). Torque the bolts (13)
and (10) to 110- 120 lb in. (12,4-13,6 N·m).
e Install the bolt (9) through the coupling (7) fork and the bellcrank
vane actuation support assembly tab. Install the nut (8) on the
bolt (9) and torque the nut (8) to 55-70 lb in. (6.2-7.9 N·m).

NOTE:
Install feedback VSV cable as follows:
Make sure that the proper part number of feedback VSV cable
is installed on the left side VSV actuator (1, Figure 1). Refer to
paragraph 2.A., Material - Price and Availability, Table 1 for the
part number required.
(f) Perform feedback VSV cable rig check. Refer to the Boeing
737-300/400/500 AMM, 75-31-02/501, VARIABLE STATOR VANE
FEEDBACK CABLE-ADJUSTMENT/TEST.
(17) Add timer hardware and/or deactivate timer. Refer to CFM56-3 S/B 72-0574.
(19) Remove the timer and associated hardware. Refer to CFM56-3 S/B 73-0039,
and the CFM56-3 ESM, 72-00-00, DISASSEMBLY.
(a) Test the converted engine as described in the CFM56-3 ESM for
CFM56-3B-2 engine model (for engines which will have a subsequent
test run).

(22) Certain rotating components may have different life limits in the CFM56-3B-2
engine model application. It is necessary to maintain accurate records of
the hours and cycles on each component at the time of conversion so that
part lives are preserved. Refer to CFM56-3 ESM, 05-11-00, to determine
remaining life for each rotating component.
(23) Remove, mark and install the identification plate (Figure 4). Refer to CFM56-3
S/B 72-0910.
