Content and Foundational Knowledge

Physical education candidates demonstrate an understanding of common and specialized content,

and scientific and theoretical foundations for the delivery of an effective PreK-12 physical
education program.

Component 1.c: Describe and apply physiological and biomechanical concepts related to
skillful movement, physical activity, and fitness for teaching PreK-12 physical
education

Artifact: EXS 397 Body Composition Lab

Date: Summer 2020
Reflection:
One of my lab assignments for my Exercise Physiology class was to collect data on ourselves in
order to measure our body composition. We collected out waist-to-hip ratio measurements and
our body mass index (BMI) to see how much fat our body consisted off. We also estimated what
our hydrostatic weight and skinfold measurements would be as well, to show that there are
multiple ways to figure out percent of body fat/body composition.

This body composition lab relates to Component 1.c because the assignment focuses on the
physiological aspects of the human body which leads to finding the total body fat percentage
through body composition in different ways. This assignment can be used to help students’ Pre-
K-12 find different ways to gather information in order to create fitness plans and activities to
actively participate in. By collecting their BMI and waist-to-hip ratio and even using skinfold
measurement, students can figure out their body composition in which they can implement with
their fitness and nutrition plans.

As a future educator, it is important that I am knowledgeable in biomechanical and physiological

aspects in order to help my students gain skill development in these topics as well. Incorporating
them in my lessons so that they understand and can hopefully apply it to future fitness and
physical activity is the goal.
