You are requested to read IPRE at Chapter 11 regarding to “Water Coning Models” from
pages 373 to 391. Make sure that you are able to understand how to determine water
breakthrough time and reservoir performance due to water coning.

Home Work #8
Make a resume for the topic explained in those ranges of pages you read. Your resume must
include several problems stated as follow:
1. Explain importance of identifying the water breakthrough time for oil production!

2. Construct a flow-of-thought of forecasting reservoir performance by using Kuo and

DesBrisay Method!
Make sure that the diagram includes determination of: 1) water breakthrough time, 2)
actual water cut at current time, 3) average oil rate at current time, and 4) error
calculation due to assumed ∆t.

3. Elaborate the main idea of Permadi and Simanjuntak Method in forecasting reservoir
performance due to water coning!
Give an illustration based on your interpretation after reading the corresponding
section!
Solve the following problem statement!
1. Consider an oil reservoir underlaid by bottom water drive. The reservoir has 5.11
MMSTB of initial oil-in-place. Water coning may occur during production. Producing
well has constant rate constraint of 150 STBD. It will be kept even after breakthrough
time. The well and reservoir are illustrated by the following figure (the scale is not
original):

The given rock-fluid data are: kh = 250mD, kv = 25 mD, ϕ = 0.2, Swc = 0.2, Sor = 0.15,
µo = 2.5 cP, M = 3, ρw = 1.095 gr/cc, ρo = 0.861 gr/cc, and Bo = 1.2 bbl/STB.
Perform a forecast for reservoir performance using Kuo and DesBrisay Method for
5,000 STB oil produced after water breakthrough time!
Assume 50 days are needed to produce 5,000 STB oil after the breakthrough. Use
ε=0.05.
