1. Scope
This recommendation relates to the quantity surveying of corrosion protection materials,
sandblasted and painted surfaces. Discrepancies and problems of interpretation shall be referred to the site
agreement for clarification with the IRPC’s Inspector.

Any deviation from this recommendation shall be agreed upon by the IRPC’s Inspector in writing.

2. Technical documentation
Quantity surveying shall preferably be performed with the technical documents furnished by the
IRPC’s Inspector (computer printouts, isometrics, drawings, etc.) Quantity surveying in the field should be
limited to a minimum (random measurements).

3. Presentation of the quantity survey

2
The quantity survey shall be prepared only on the basis of the units (m, m ) stipulated in the
order and shall be separate for the specified painting systems. The individual items shall be summarized for
each unit. The quantity survey shall be drawn up in a clear manner to permit quickly
verification.

If the quantity survey has been established in terms of m only, the IRPC’s Inspector is entitled to
2 2
request the contractor to compile an additional summary in terms of m . The conversion of meters to m of
painted surface is left to the contractor’s discretion.

The additional summary shall contain the following information subdivided into painting systems
(and units) :
2
- m of painted equipment surfaces (total surface of equipment, tanks, vessels, machinery, etc.)
2
- m painted pipe surfaces (total surface of pipes, fittings, flanges, valves, etc.)

4. Quantity survey of pipelines

4.1 General

Piping shall be deemed to include all items under M-1001 Piping Standard. Classification of the
piping into the corresponding nominal size (DN) shall be based on the outside pipe diameter d.
Cut outs such as for pipe nozzles, branch lines and the like will not be deducted.

The quantity survey of prefabricated piping (e.g. rubber lined piping) shall be the same as for field-
fabrication piping.

Painted insulation cladding surfaces shall be computed from the outer pipe dimensions, increased by the
insulation thickness s. For simplified quantity survey, d + 2*s may be replaced by the nearest larger
(standard) pipe outside diameter.
2
If painting in terms of m has been ordered, the table shall be used for the conversion of the
individual items.

No, extra charge will be allowed for aggravating conditions.

Figure 1. Pipe line cal. length

The abbreviations used in the formulae have the following meaning :

A = Surface
As = Surface of supporting structures
U = Circumference
d, D = Outside diameter
DN = Diameter Nominal
r, R = Radius
H = Height
L, s = Length
B = Width
X*Y = “X” multiply “Y”
1/2
(X)^ = square root “X”

Straight pipe lengths shall be measured up to connecting welds of flanges, elbows, valves,
reducers, tees, etc. Referring to isometric drawings, the accuracy of the listing is given by the calculator.

If quantity surveying is performed in the field, straight lengths shall be rounded off to the nearest
0.05 m.

4.3 Fittings
Fittings shall be converted to straight lengths and measured according to 4.2.

4.3.1 Elbows
Quantities will be measured in terms of pieces referred to the outside pipe diameter d,
the standard radius R = 1.5 d and the elbow angle.

o o
One-part elbows with angles between 46 and 135 will be considered as one elbow.
o
One part elbows with angles below 46 will be considered as half an elbow. One-part elbows with angles
o
over 135 will be considered as two elbows.

An elbow will be considered as a straight pipe length as follows :

L = 0.75 * d * 3.14 = 2.35 * d

4.3.2 Tees
Quantities will be measured in terms of pieces referred to the outside pipe diameter d.

Quantity survey shall be restricted to welding tees. Classification of the tees shall be
based on the largest outside pipe diameter d.

A tee will be considered as a straight pipe length of

L = 4.5 * d

4.3.3 Reducers
Quantities will be measured in terms of pieces referred to the outside pipe diameter d.

Classification of the reducers shall be based on the larger outside pipe diameter d.

A reducer will be considered as a straight pipe length of

L = 1.5 * d.

4.4 Flanges
Quantities will be measured in terms of pieces referred to the pipe outside diameter d .

A flange or blind flange will be considered as a straight pipe length of 0.3 m of the corresponding pipe
diameter d.

Different nominal pressures will not be taken into account.

4.5 Valves
Quantities will be measured in terms of pieces referred to the nominal diameter DN.

The term “Valves” shall be deemed to include flanged components, such as check valves, gate valves,
control valves, sight glasses, strainers, level indicators and the like irrespective of their installed length and
including their operating elements (hand wheels, levers).

A valve up to DN 2” will be considered as a straight pipe length of 1 m and a valve of DN 2-1/2” and
above will be considered as 2 m of the corresponding outside pipe diameter.

Different nominal pressures will not be taken into account.

Valves with welding ends and screwed ends will be considered as 0.8 pieces.

The Table 1. Calculation outside surface of pipeline will be present in Appendix 1.

5. Quantity survey of steel structures

Quantities of steel structures for buildings, pipe bridges, staircases, platforms, ladders and supporting
structures for equipment, machinery and piping will be measured in terms of tons referred to the weight
installed.

2
30 m /ton for medium-weight structures
(weight of section 30 to 60 kg/m)
2
40 m /ton for light structures
(weight of section 5 to 30 kg/m)

Values other than those mentioned above shall only be acceptable if the contractor gives provable
evidence thereof.

Weights shall be measured with an accuracy of 0.1 t.

Quantities of individual sections (e.g. supports and supporting structures for piping) and reinforcing
members on equipment, tanks and vessels shall be measured in terms of m. For calculating the surfaces,
use shall be made of the values contained in the table 2 that will be present in Appendix 1.

The lengths of individual sections shall be measured with an accuracy of 0.1 m.

The quantity survey shall only comprise the painted surfaces of the sections.
