1. SCOPE 2
2. TECHNICAL DOCUMENTATION 2
7. APPENDIX 1 18
GFG-002
1. Scope
This recommendation relates to the quantity surveying of corrosion protection materials,
sandblasted and painted surfaces. Discrepancies and problems of interpretation shall be referred to the site
agreement for clarification with the IRPC’s Inspector.
Any deviation from this recommendation shall be agreed upon by the IRPC’s Inspector in writing.
2. Technical documentation
Quantity surveying shall preferably be performed with the technical documents furnished by the
IRPC’s Inspector (computer printouts, isometrics, drawings, etc.) Quantity surveying in the field should be
limited to a minimum (random measurements).
If the quantity survey has been established in terms of m only, the IRPC’s Inspector is entitled to
2 2
request the contractor to compile an additional summary in terms of m . The conversion of meters to m of
painted surface is left to the contractor’s discretion.
The additional summary shall contain the following information subdivided into painting systems
(and units) :
2
- m of painted equipment surfaces (total surface of equipment, tanks, vessels, machinery, etc.)
2
- m painted pipe surfaces (total surface of pipes, fittings, flanges, valves, etc.)
Piping shall be deemed to include all items under M-1001 Piping Standard. Classification of the
piping into the corresponding nominal size (DN) shall be based on the outside pipe diameter d.
Cut outs such as for pipe nozzles, branch lines and the like will not be deducted.
The quantity survey of prefabricated piping (e.g. rubber lined piping) shall be the same as for field-
fabrication piping.
Painted insulation cladding surfaces shall be computed from the outer pipe dimensions, increased by the
insulation thickness s. For simplified quantity survey, d + 2*s may be replaced by the nearest larger
(standard) pipe outside diameter.
2
If painting in terms of m has been ordered, the table shall be used for the conversion of the
individual items.
Straight pipe lengths shall be measured up to connecting welds of flanges, elbows, valves,
reducers, tees, etc. Referring to isometric drawings, the accuracy of the listing is given by the calculator.
If quantity surveying is performed in the field, straight lengths shall be rounded off to the nearest
0.05 m.
4.3 Fittings
Fittings shall be converted to straight lengths and measured according to 4.2.
4.3.1 Elbows
Quantities will be measured in terms of pieces referred to the outside pipe diameter d,
the standard radius R = 1.5 d and the elbow angle.
o o
One-part elbows with angles between 46 and 135 will be considered as one elbow.
o
One part elbows with angles below 46 will be considered as half an elbow. One-part elbows with angles
o
over 135 will be considered as two elbows.

4.3.2 Tees
Quantities will be measured in terms of pieces referred to the outside pipe diameter d.
Quantity survey shall be restricted to welding tees. Classification of the tees shall be
based on the largest outside pipe diameter d.
L = 4.5 * d
4.3.3 Reducers
Quantities will be measured in terms of pieces referred to the outside pipe diameter d.
Classification of the reducers shall be based on the larger outside pipe diameter d.
L = 1.5 * d.
4.4 Flanges
Quantities will be measured in terms of pieces referred to the pipe outside diameter d .
A flange or blind flange will be considered as a straight pipe length of 0.3 m of the corresponding pipe
diameter d.
4.5 Valves
Quantities will be measured in terms of pieces referred to the nominal diameter DN.
The term “Valves” shall be deemed to include flanged components, such as check valves, gate valves,
control valves, sight glasses, strainers, level indicators and the like irrespective of their installed length and
including their operating elements (hand wheels, levers).
A valve up to DN 2” will be considered as a straight pipe length of 1 m and a valve of DN 2-1/2” and
above will be considered as 2 m of the corresponding outside pipe diameter.
Valves with welding ends and screwed ends will be considered as 0.8 pieces.
Values other than those mentioned above shall only be acceptable if the contractor gives provable
evidence thereof.
Quantities of individual sections (e.g. supports and supporting structures for piping) and reinforcing
members on equipment, tanks and vessels shall be measured in terms of m. For calculating the surfaces,
use shall be made of the values contained in the table 2 that will be present in Appendix 1.
The quantity survey shall only comprise the painted surfaces of the sections.

Painted insulation cladding surfaces shall be computed from the outer dimensions of the equipment or
machinery, increased by the insulation thickness.
Nozzles for the tie-in of piping, manholes, vessel flanges and the like will be considered as non-
existent and no extra charge will be allowed.
If, as opposed to the (quotation) sketch or drawing, equipment and machinery have been painted in
part only, the quantity survey shall be corrected by the reduced surface.
Supporting structures and reinforcing members (surface as) made of steel sections shall be measured
according to 5.
No extra charge will be allowed for special surfaces (e.g. of motors) or aggravating conditions.
Supporting brackets will be considered as non-existent and no extra charge will be allowed.
For determining the surfaces, the formulae given under 6.2 to 6.9 shall be used or, in special cases,
adapted accordingly.
o
Conical heads and covers with an angle of inclination of up to and including 10 and dished heads shall
also be considered as circular surfaces.
As regards tanks and vessels on foundations, the bottom head surfaces shall only be measured if they
have been painted on the jobsite.

For the quantity survey, the height of conical heads and covers with an angle of inclination of up to and
o
including 10 and of dished heads shall be considered cylindrical.
The following applies to regular and irregular conical shell surfaces with D : d of 8 or
above :
o
Conical shell surfaces shall be measured whenever the angle of inclination exceeds 10 .
If the D : d ratio is smaller than 8, the following applies to the surface of the truncated cone shell :
A = 1.57 * S * (D + d)
2 2 1/2
S = (H + 0.25 * (D – d) )^
Conical transitions of cylindrical bodies with different diameters, where H = max. 1 m. and D : d is
smaller than 1.5, shall be considered as cylindrical shell surfaces.
Figure 6. Transitions
A = 6.28 * R * H
2 2 1/2
H = R – (R – D )^
Example 1 :
2 2
A = 0.785*(D + d ) + 3.14*D*H + 3.14*d*H1 + 3.14*D*L
Example 2 :
2
A = 0.785*D + 3.14*D*H + 1.57*D*S + As
2
The cover surface A = 0.785*D is omitted in the case of open vessels.

o
Pyramidal covers with an angle of inclination of up to and including 10 shall also be considered as
rectangular surfaces.
As regards vessels, the bottom head surfaces shall only be measured if they have been painted on the
jobsite.
2
Cut-outs, corners and the like which are smaller than 0.5m will not be deducted.
A = 0.5 * H * (L + S)
The following applies to regular and irregular pyramidal shell surfaces with L : L1 or B : B1 equaling or
exceeding 8 :
A = B * S + L * S1
2 2 1/2
S = ( H + 0.25*L )^
2 2 1/2
S1 = ( H + 0.25B )^
o
Pyramidal shell surfaces shall be measured whenever the angle of inclination exceeds 10 .
If the ratio L : L1 or B : B1 is smaller than B, the following applies to the surface of the truncated
pyramid shell :
In the case of irregular pyramids and truncated pyramids, s and s, shall be the mean value of the
opposite sides.
For determining the total surface, use shall be made of the formulae according to 6.3.1 to 6.3.3
Example :
6.4 Equipment

The following applies to each item :
A = 2*L*B + 2*H*L
Circular or angular ducts, chutes and the like shall be subdivided for the quantity survey such that the
formulae given under 6.2 and 6.3 can be used.
The length of corner pieces and bends is deemed the length of the centerline.
