2. PURPOSE
The purpose of this Method Statement is to define the procedure for the preparation and construction of
Manhole inside the Villas in accordance with the requirements specified in the relevant specifications,
procedures and drawings, considering safety and quality of the work activities.

This Method Statement is applicable for the complete Project.

6. RESPONSIBILITIES
6.1. Project Manager
1. Ensures that the project works in his sector are carried out in accordance with Company policies and in
accordance with the requirements of the quality plan, specifications and contract.
2. Ensures the full compliance of subcontractors with Company Quality policies and with the
requirements of this method statement.
3. To ensure that all the equipment required to execute the works according to the construction
programme are available, in good condition, and provide any additional equipment that might be
required.
4. To co-ordinate with the Construction Manager, Project Engineer, Safety Engineer, Foreman and
Surveyor for a safe and proper execution of the works.
5. To guide specific attention to all safety measures in co-ordination with the safety officer/engineer.

6.2. Construction Manager


1. Ensure area is ready and safe to start the works.
2. Set up required equipment and plant through discussion with the Project Manager and Project
Engineer/Works Supervisor.
3. Ensure the works are carried out according to the specification and approved shop drawings.
4. Liaise and co-ordinate with the Project Manager for the agreed sequence of works with respect to the
construction programme.
5. Allocation of required manpower through co-ordination with the Project Manager.
6. Provide the risk assessments for the works in hand.
7. Provide sufficient and safe access for operatives, trucks and pumps.
8. Take precautionary measures with regards to protecting works from hot weather, wind, rain and sun.

6.3. Project Engineer


1. The Engineer will carry out his duties in a manner that will be co-ordinated by the Project Manager on
a daily basis, and will ensure proper distribution of the workforce and equipment at required locations.
2. To be aware of test frequencies related to the formation level.
3. To control disposal of waste excavated material according to the instructions received from the Project
Manager.
4. To co-ordinate with the Safety Officer to maintain safe working and proper housekeeping of the site.
To comply with the safety measures and ensure that all Safety Officer Teams are aware of the same to
prevent accident and loss.
5. To inform the QC Inspector of the areas ready for inspection and to prepare the ITR with complete
attachments.

6.4. QA/QC Engineer / Inspector


1. Ensuring that Consultant/Client inspection requests are implemented.
2. Compilation of all necessary quality control checklists
3. Assisting Consultants during the Inspections.
4. Coordinating with the third party lab regarding tests and results.
5. The control of work performance by means of checking the work before consultants’ inspection and
issuing RFIs & punch lists as necessary.
6. Completion of documentation to verify the work performed.
7. Controlling all inspection activities on-site in line with ITPs.
8. Ensuring that all test equipment including surveying equipment is calibrated and is suitable for use on-
site.

6.5. Surveyor
1. To establish benchmarks from agreed reference points, provide required setting out and level
markings and follow up with regular checks.
2. Co-ordinate with the Project Engineer / Foreman and ensure the approved shop
drawings/construction drawings will be implemented properly.
3. Maintain survey details and reports, periodically check the progressing works and advise the Project
Manager of any deviation from the drawings.

6.6. HSE Engineer/Officer


1. To ensure implementation of all safety measures related to the nature of works being carried out, and
in accordance with the Project Safety Plan.
2. To ensure that all the persons involved in the works are aware of their responsibilities, and that they
have enough understanding of the safety procedures.
3. The Safety Officer in co-ordination with the Project Manager will ensure that all the implemented
safety measures are effective enough to maintain safe working on the site.
4. To maintain continuous inspections of the site activities, advise and train persons on a daily basis to
prevent accidents and personnel injury.
5. To give special concern to housekeeping, and ensure that the site is maintained clean and tidy.
6. To ensure all the relevant safety sign boards for different works are in place.

6.7. Foremen/ Works Supervisor


1. Ensure the works are progressed in the sequence as agreed with the Project Manager.
2. Ensure ready mix concrete ordered from the approved supplier is delivered on time and with sufficient
quantity for continuous casting of the planned pour.
3. Liaise with the Project / Site Manager for the allocation of the work force, ensuring adequate
manpower is available.
4. Liaise with the site manager to ensure all the required plant / materials are available to construct the
works.
5. Full time supervision will be required to ensure the works are progressing to the latest approved for
construction drawings and specification.

8. PROCEDURE FOR CONSTRUCTION OF MANHOLE INSIDE THE VILLAS


8.1. Setting out
1. The Surveyor will establish the location, axis/gridlines, invert level and lay-out of manhole. Check the
level of blinding, concrete base and invert level of pipes, axis/gridlines, and dimensions and ensure
that works are carried out in accordance with approved shop drawings and coordination with
approved external ground levels and pipes level.
2. The manhole top level must comply with approved level, shop drawing and coordination in the
pavement lay-out and final level.

8.2. Excavation and Compaction Works


1. Excavate the location of manhole in the garage area or any other location as per approved shop
drawings. Excavation for manhole to be in accordance to dimension and levels shown in the approved
drawings. Clean and remove all debris found in the manhole excavation. If the manhole is over
excavated then fill using approved fill material. Manual compaction required for the base of each
manhole. The Contractor to submit the ITR for all holds points as shown in the attached ITP of
manhole construction.
2. 50mm thick concrete blinding under manhole foundation – Formwork for the blinding shall be
prepared by Contractor after approval of excavation level from the Consultant. Anti-termite treatment
shall be done by the approved subcontractor and immediately polyethylene sheets will be installed
prior to placement of the blinding concrete.

8.3. Placement of Blinding


1. The blinding concrete is C20 N/mm² MSRC and constructed in accordance to approved dimension
shown in the drawings. The Contractor shall maintain and follow the proper curing time for blinding.
Before casting the Manhole base the approved material for waterproofing will be applied to the top of
the blinding.
2. Pouring of 150mm. thick Concrete Base - The Contractor must comply in the formworks for base
concrete in accordance to approved dimension as shown in the drawings. The concrete base is C40
N/mm² MSRC. After casting the concrete, the Contractor shall maintain and follow the proper
procedure for curing of concrete.
3. Casting of Manhole walls- The contractor will cast RCC walls as per approved shop drawings and
details for manhole having depth of more than 1000mm using C40 N/mm2 MSRC and for depth less
than 1000mm solid blocks will be installed.

8.4. Installation of Solid Block


Setting–out. The Surveyor shall establish the location of solid bock works and the dimensions should conform
to the approved drawings.
8.5. Laying of Block works
1. Lying of solid blocks is conformed to the project specification Section 042200 unless otherwise
mentioned in this method statement.
2. The Block work mortar shall be mixed in proportions of 1 part cement and 6 parts of fine aggregates.
3. Mixing will be done using mechanical mortar mixer, when a mechanical mixer is unavailable the
mortar will be mixed manually.
4. The plumb and level of block walls shall be maintained. Joints shall be uniform and well filled.
Unsatisfactory works shall be removed and replaced immediately.
5. Lying of Block works with MEP Pipes – The Contractor shall check the exact location of pipes and their
invert levels to ensure compliance to approved drawings.
6. Block-outs / openings at the required location of pipes can be provided. If a pipe box out is not
installed or added later then the point of pipe penetration will be marked and the solid block wall will
be cut using a grinder.
7. As per the requirements of the MEP Engineer and after verifying the size of pipes passing through the
opening the pipe shall be installed.
8. After the installation of pipes, the Contractor installed the small formworks around the pipes and the
openings should be closed by concrete.

8.6. Plastering the walls


1. The internal and the external surfaces of the manhole shall be plastered as per the approved method
statement for plastering the standard practice and specifications. The Contractor shall make the floor
slope at 1:6 towards to centre of manhole or in accordance to approved slope shown in approved
drawings.
2. Above the C40 N/mm2 MSRC concrete base slab of manhole benching will be done using SRC cement
sand mortar mixed at ratio of (1:2).Benching and channel will be formed as per the site conditions and
approved drawings.
3. Pouring of 100mm thick concrete make up cover - The Contractor shall prepare the formwork for
concrete cover in accordance to approved dimension shown in the drawings. The concreting of the
manhole concrete cover shall be carried out in accordance with the approved dimensions shown in the
drawings. The level and the location of the manhole cover shall be checked to ensure it matches the
approved drawings and the site conditions.
4. After casting the concrete, the Contractor shall maintain and follow the proper procedure for curing
of concrete. The formwork shall be removed through the manhole cover opening.
5. The inside of the manhole shall be cleaned of debris after curing is complete.

8.7. Waterproofing Works


1. To treat the surface of the benching, the Contractor shall apply the two (2) coats of sodium silicate or
as per approved material for the manhole treatment as shown in the approved drawing and material
submittal.
2. The interior face of walls or inside the manhole shall be applied by two (2) coats of chemical resistant
epoxy paint or approved equal brand based on the material submittal and approval.
3. The exterior face of the walls shall be applied with (primer +two (2)) coats of Flexkote. Flexkote is the
material approved for substructure waterproofing.
4. The waterproofing works shall be carried out in accordance to approved materials and
manufacturers recommendations for proper application.
8.8. Backfilling, Compaction and Termite treatment
1. After completion of manhole work backfilling will be done by filling with approved material. All filling
should be done in layers of 200mm compacted and field density test of final layer should be
conducted. Termite treatment shall be done by approved subcontractor on backfill periphery to treat
backfill soil and immediately polyethylene sheets will be installed. Contractor to submit ITR for all hold
points as shown in attached ITP for manhole construction.
2. Note: This method statement should be in conjunction with MEP method statement for pipe laying
and procedures shall comply with the requirements of the municipality and works are carried-out in
accordance with approved shop drawing by the Municipality and Consultant.
