CALENDAR OF ACTIVITIES

2020 NMWC THEME: The Member-states usually adopt the IMO’s theme for the World Maritime Day celebration.
For 2020, the IMO’s theme for WMD is "Sustainable shipping for a sustainable planet" which aims to provide
an opportunity to raise awareness of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and showcase
the work that the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and its Member States are undertaking to achieve the
targets.
IMO Circular No. 1884 dated 11 July 1996 of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), enjoining all member
states to celebrate World Maritime Day on the last week of every September of each year aimed to focus attention
on the importance of maritime safety, security, and environment protection.
Presidential Proclamation 1094 series of 1997 which consolidated National Maritime Day* and National
Seafarer’s Day** making a weeklong celebration dubbed National Maritime Week (NMW) to be more significant,
encompassing and inspiring.
Presidential Proclamation No. 1560 series of 2008 which mandated the planning and coordinating of the NMW
event to be alternately rotated amongst the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA), Philippine Coast Guard (PCG)
and the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) / Cebu Ports Authority (CPA) pursuant to.
Presidential Proclamation No. 316 series of 2017 which declares the whole month of September as the Maritime
and Archipelagic Nation Month (MaNA Mo) which synchronizes the observance of the Fish Conservation Week
with the International Coastal Clean-up Day and the National Maritime Day which are held in September.

*Presidential Proclamation No. 886 dated 06 September 1996 declared the last Friday of September every year as the National Maritime Day (NMD).
**Proclamation No. 1094 series of 1997 declared every last Sunday of September of every year as National Seafarer’s Day (NSD), which amended Presidential Proclamation No.
828 series of 1996 in due recognition of Filipino seafarers’ vital role in the economic growth of the country.
